The 7 minute long "The Canadian Railroad Trilogy" is just mind blowing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5LXqWmmm5doiKc Gordon Lightfoot is undoubtedly the greatest Canadian story teller of all time. When the question becomes "Who are the two greatest Canadian songwriter/artists of all time?", the answer is Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell. Those two incredible artists with such beautiful souls are forever etched in Canadian history... and probably still will be 1000 years from now. I just can't see how the gifts of musical magic that those two people gave to the world will ever be surpassed. On the flip side, just like everybody else I hope some day somebody even greater comes along and raises the levels of love for all of humanity even that much higher. 👊 💗

As a proud Canadian I cannot begin to tell you how much this man's music has meant to me and my family. I saw him several times at Massey Hall in Toronto and he was such a wonderfully creative performer and wordsmith and always left the stage leaving us all more fulfilled. I hadn't seen him perform for many years but for my 65th birthday my two sons and beautiful daughter's-in-law treated me to another Lightfoot performance. He was in his late 70's at that point and he'd definitely lost a step or two and his voice didn't have the full register and timbre of his younger days but it was a wonderful moment for me and my family. He was a titan of the music industry, a true troubadour, a master storyteller and I'm so thankful I've been able to enjoy his music for 6 decades. RIP Gordie. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!

R.I.P. Gordon (24 hrs, after news) My Dad was a fan of Lightfoot's, back in the 1970's. I knew his voice and songs off vinyl. My Dad, is also named Gordon. We were able to see G.L. live, in July 2017, near our homes in south Ohio -a fine concert. My Dad has Dementia, now, age 82, and he lives with me, as his primary care. I told my Dad after breakfast that Lightfoot had died last night. He began to cry. When we went out to the Barber, and for lunch (I am the driver, for my Dad) I played a "Greatest" of Lightfoot's -my Dad cried again, but he recognizes the songs, and the concert we saw. A great talent, who leaves behind his legacy of music, lyrics, and voice.

When we got tickets, i spent the months prior to the concert listening to the two "Gord"s Gold" greatest hits albums as well as "Summertime Dream", which had the original version of the song. Just high quality folk that speaks to you, gets under your skin. He was great on stage, too. Solid band and straight-forward performer. @@sarahjaneblenkhorn8821 Mike Reno of Loverboy steals the show in the Tears are Not Enough documentary. He comes across as a fun, good guy. Corey Hart shows some character as well that would show in his later life.

Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. CC OOnt (November 17, 1938 - May 1, 2023) was a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music. He is credited with helping to define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s.[1] He has been referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter[2] and his songs have been recorded by some of the world's most renowned musical artists.[3] Lightfoot's biographer Nicholas Jennings said, "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about trains and shipwrecks, rivers and highways, lovers and loneliness."[4] Lightfoot's songs, including "For Lovin' Me", "Early Morning Rain", "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon of Darkness"-a number one hit on the U.S. country chart[5] with Marty Robbins's cover in 1965-and "Black Day in July", about the 1967 Detroit riot, brought him wide recognition in the 1960s. Canadian chart success with his own recordings began in 1962 with the No. 3 hit "(Remember Me) I'm the One", followed by recognition and charting abroad in the 1970s. He topped the US Hot 100 or Adult Contemporary (AC) chart with the hits "If You Could Read My Mind" (1970), "Sundown" (1974); "Carefree Highway" (1974), "Rainy Day People" (1975), and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (1976), and had many other hits that appeared in the top 40.[6] Several of Lightfoot's albums achieved gold and multi-platinum status internationally. His songs have been recorded by many notable artists.[7] The Guess Who recorded a song called "Lightfoot" on their 1968 album Wheatfield Soul; the lyrics contain many Lightfoot song titles. Robbie Robertson of the Band described Lightfoot as "a national treasure".[8] Bob Dylan, also a Lightfoot fan, called him one of his favourite songwriters and said, "I can't think of any Gordon Lightfoot song I don't like. Every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever.... Lightfoot became a mentor for a long time. I think he probably still is to this day".[9] Lightfoot was a featured musical performer at the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta and has received numerous honours and awards.

Jay & Amber, you'd like his "Rainy Day People" for your 6th song from Gordon!

Canada lost a national treasure with Gordon Lightfoot's passing. I had the opportunity to see him in concert back in 1980 and I'm so happy I did. Let light perpetual shine upon him.

Those fortunate to live in Toronto had hundreds of opportunities to see Gordon Lightfoot when he played his week long residence at Massy Hall every year. Obviously he did this less as he advanced in age, but he had another tour booked for this year and I knew something was up when he cancelled it a few weeks ago. He was a simple honest man from Orillia, a small town about an hour from Toronto, and he never lost that or his generous spirit. He played guitar, but really he played with his heart.

The first time I saw Gordon live was in Toronto's Massey Hall in 1967 when I was 17. It was 'a quintessential Canadian experience' for me in two ways. Being there to see greatness and I got engaged to my bride after the show. I cry today for the passing of both.
