Fantastic Four (2005) has been talked about as being one of "those" old 2000's movies that we should forget. A movie that wasn't good, and is a perfect example of how NOT to make a superhero movie. Well today I'm here to say that it's actually a good film, one that captures core ideas of the Fantastic Four, and is a classic every superhero fan should watch!

Sure is more respect than what Marvel Studios is showing. I mean, look at my girl Kamala! They changed her to a Purple Lantern (or Night Light) because they found her powers she shares with Reed to be gross. And what happened to Reed in Multiverse of Madness? He barely used his stretchy powers and Wanda turned him into spaghetti. After Ms. Marvel and Multiverse of Madness, I don't have much hope for the MCU's Fantastic Four. They are scared of showing someone stretching.

The bridge scene in the 1st Fantastic Four movie is so underrated, I'm specifically talking about the scene where the Thing tried to pick up his fiancée’s ring, that's still one of the most well done scene in comic book movies history, it's basically the Sandman transformation scene but better, at least that's a villain, and he did eventually picked up his daughter's photo, and he has the ability to turn back human form, the Thing never managed to pick it up, and he's a good guy who got turned into a monster due to an accident, and his fiancée abandoned him after he just saved the day

Yes this sudden praise for these movies is weird I remember on release this movie got a mid-level reception and it's sequel amazes me when some call it a classic or try to say that the casting was RDJ Tony Stark level perfect when quite frankly I don't see any of these castings being that spot on quite sure in the superhero movie history book this one will barely be a footnote along with its sequel the notable superhero movies of this decade are going to be Batman Begins The Dark Knight Iron Man the first two Sam Raimi Spider-Man and the first two X-Men movies

Great video. As someone who also grew up watching this film, man do the emotional moments with Ben Grimm still hit hard. I think Stan Lee said that Michael Chiklis' portrayal was his favourite superhero portrayal ever, and I can completely see why. Also Chiklis urged the filmmakers for a full practical Thing, which I think really helps him with the emotional acting.

@huntcd2012

This movie was fairly unique at the time as one of the first (of. If the first) superhero films where the heroes had no secret identities. And you are right that Michael Chikliks is the glue that holds everything together. I could honestly watch an entire film of him just trying to navigate his life without any action taking place. In fact, I’d say the action was the movie’s undoing. It didn’t really mesh with the film’s attempt at being more character driven resulting in an awkward finale where the four are able to make up because Doom tried to kill them. But at the same time, there is a certain charm to the cast to go with the uniqueness of the narrative. Also, Kerry Washington is always a plus.

@libRteedude
@libRteedude 2 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that they were originally going to do CGI for the Thing, but Michael Chiklis pushed for them to do a suit, even though it would take more time and require him to sit in a makeup chair for hours. Apparently Chiklis was a big fan of the comics and thought the Thing needed to be as practical as possible to give Ben's dilemma more weight (the more real he looked, the more empathetic the audience would be). He even went as far as to wear the costume's dentures home, just so he could get used to them and find the best way to say his lines. Dude went above and beyond for this role, and that makes it so great.

I’d say they nailed the personalities and relationships of the characters aside from Doom and a little bit of Sue. If they utilized Doom’s background, I’d say the story would’ve been way better than it already was. Thinking about it, what really bogged these films down were their mediocre antagonists, aside from Silver Surfer who was very multilayered and interesting. These two Fantastic Four movies were apart of my childhood that helped me get into Marvel and introduced me to the F4. Yes they are not perfect and a bit cheap and silly but I don’t understand when people say they are terrible, they aren’t great but not bad. Chris Evans, Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chicklis were great it’s just the character writing wasn’t on par with what the characters should be. Jessica Alba was a pathetic Sue Storm though and they wrote her so so weakly. I actually liked Julian McMahon’s Dr Doom even though it is nowhere near what Doom is meant to be, he acted pretty villainous. Also the best thing about these movies is John Ottman’s score. I’m so hyped for the MCU F4, I still can’t believe they casted John Krasinski!

Completely agree with you about the costumes! OG fantastic four costumes are top tier. Glad I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Ioan Gruffudd deserves more love, he’s been in different stuff but shows like Harrow and Forever show he could dive in what makes Reed more than a nerd genius, he could show being disturbed relentlessly genius and that’s what Reed is, while all the same caring about people around him, he cares about history and it’s importance as well If there’s a chance he could come back, he should, I still love these movies even if they’re not perfect

Before I knew what Rotten tomatoes and all that was, I remember growing up just naturally believing that this movie was held in the same regard as the likes of the Spiderman and Nolan Batman movies, realised later on that it wasn't received well at all, but it left an impression on me that will always be there, it's the quintessential early to mid 2000s superhero movie with that blend of drama, goofiness, perfect casting and a perfect mix of flawless effects as well as some really dated ones

Yeah I know it definitely did not stay faithful among the other many problems there's a reason why the cast barely acknowledges the movie and why Chris Evans moved on to Captain America

The idea about the suits is that they got mutated with them as they were hit by the cosmic rays, so they’re attuned their powers. Mister Fantastic’s suit can stretch with him, Invisible Woman’s suit can turn invisible with her, and Human Torch’s suit can burst into flames without burning to ash.

This movie was my childhood. I’ve always loved how it’s a pretty small scale character driven story, instead of the massive world ending stories we usually get in these types of films. Plus the practical effects are fantastic (pun intended) and still hold up to this day.

I agree with you. I felt the 2005 FF movie was really good. My biggest complaint about it was that Reed's temples should have been greyer. I feel like it's best if you watch both the movies back to back to get the full affect. I realize that makes for a very looong movie but they complement each other. If I had my way, I would splice them together (I just wish they hadn't changed Sue's hair in the sequel). Here's hoping they learn from their mistakes and make a home run with the fourth movie. Hmmm... They say "3rd times a charm" but maybe the "4th" time will be a charm in this case. ;)
