Ok....so if those crayons were made in 1959....then they are 63 years old, not 74. I'm only saying this because I was born in 1957, and this may have been something my parents bought me, as I've been drawing my entire life.. Don't mean to sound snarky....it's just hard enough to be a "new" senior without people thinking that the "antique" art supplies I possibly used are 9 years older than me instead of 2 years YOUNGER than me. That being said, I love watching people being excited by past art supplies. I think you two are great.

I guess in the 50s they weren't so overcautious about using non-toxic pigments. And those old fashioned ones, with heavy metals and other potentially poisonous stuff, may tend to hold longer their colour than synthetic ones with non-toxic substitutes (especially as these aren't around long enough to tell how long they will last in reality - I assume there were lab experiments). No research done, it is just what instantly came into my mind.

Talking sketchbooks, I'm actually working on making one myself with some weirdly specific attributes. Like it has this pretty much exactly A6 format for paper but it's "soft". It's also refillable. You can open up one side to slide more paper in or remove some older paper, then lock it back into place. I love sketchbooks and I love keeping them around but I hate how at some point they're full and you have to replace them. So that way I can keep the sketchbook going, just adding or replacing paper along the way. With the measurements I'm working with atm, it can get up to like 4cm thick

I hope they're not straining your eyes as much any longer...? My optician gave me a tip for strained eyes, if you're looking at something close to your face for a long time (screen, sketchbook etc.) use the "20 rule", after 20 min look out the window and focus on something 20 meters away for 20 seconds. It helps the eyes relax. Hope this helps someone!

And the artist with the oil said that they were always super shocked when people who don't have a studio thats properly ventilated and stuff just casually use oil paint cause it's apparently really dangerous to use? They said the least you have to do is paint with all the windows open and even then they wouldn't recommend it. That might be worth looking into 😅 cause you mentioned a video with oil paints that made you feel weird.
