I would highly recommend The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. It is set in our world but has a beautiful magic system that is very unique.

I just read and LOVED Babel as well, and I haven't read A Deadly Education, but while reading Babel I was reminded a lot of Vita Nostra, which is another magic school dark academia that has a LOT to say. Loved it a lot, and definitely would be perfect for winter as well! ❄❄

The controversy around the Scholomance series sounds really silly. It is one of my absolutely favorite YA series (so maybe I’m biased on its quality but definitely not on the validity of its controversy lol) I hope you read it. Can’t wait to read some of the other books you talked about. Great list.

I haven't read Babel (yet) but I don't think it's that similar to A Deadly Education beyond the school setting. A Deadly Education is very action and plot based, it's about survival in a harsh environment that's set up unfairly. It does criticise the magical society's elitism and how it prioritises rich kids. While it is an important theme, it's not what the book centers on necessarily. Neither it does on being a person or color, the school is very international so there are kids of all different backgrounds and countries. Of course, lots of care needs to be taken when writing story like this to make sure the representation is respectful. I think this was attempted by Naomi Novik, even if it wasn't perfect and the controversy was blown out of proportion. The Betrayals was an intriguing read, very complex and full of morally grey characters.

A new video from you, yeah! :) I do like to read fantasy books but I just don't do that often enough. I usually did read a lot more fantasy when I was a teenager. But in October and November (and December) I have been readin The Lord of the Rings for the very first time and really enjoyed the journey so far. Stephen King is one of my favorite author but I haven't read (and do not own) his newest novel yet.

I'm planning to read The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series (it's fantasy) but we'll see if I'm going to ACTUALLY read it lol. Now I'm intrigued by that Stephen King's book, I haven't read anything by him either. And I may pick up The Betrayals because I tried reading and had no idea what's going on and my adhd brain doesn't like confusing first chapters, but I might give that book another chance. 🙃❄❄❄

The controversy over A Deadly Education is a case of people noticing diversity and picking apart a good effort, when those same people don’t go after, say, the latest Emily Henry romcom for doing absolutely nothing to challenge the white heteronormative implicitly-Christian status quo. Naomi Novik is Jewish and probably has something to say about a minority experience. Also, it’s a major story point that El doesn’t have friends and spends a lot of time in isolation. I’m unsure of how she would have observed anyone else’s culture, you know? Then again, it’s also common for people to go after Jews for not being “enough” of a minority when they want to invalidate us. I would make up your own mind about it.
@violaivy
@violaivy Жыл бұрын
Yes people ripped this book apart for trying to be diverse while adoring maany romance books about white characters and SJM books & Blood and Ash series. Sure constructive criticism is fine but it should be constructive and should apply to all books not just ones some people deemed "problematic". Would it better if Novik just wrote a school with all white students? Then people would've criticised for not having diversity.
@rachaelr7567
@rachaelr7567 Жыл бұрын
@@violaivy I think lots of readers (younger ones especially) look for every minority character to hit every facet of “representation,” when that’s not how real people actually present themselves or interact with each other. I was actually a bit impressed that Novik mentioned the non-Western character names in passing without making a big deal about it.
