I suppose the people who found the show boring just have a different fix that they're looking for. Something that was more "fantastical" which usually equated to flashy effects and bombastic characters with unnatural abilities. The irony and subtle beauty of Grimgar is that it's a story of normalcy set in a world of fantasy. What do "normal" folk in a fantasy world with fantasy rules actually do on a normal day.

I agree with a lot of this. Grimgar still holds a special place in fantasy isekais in my opinion, despite the slow pacing being one of its bigger downfalls. One aspect that made me connect with the world and characters even more was refraining from using the RPG-like system in the show. There is no XP, no stats on weapons or abilities, no UI, and no ranks. Everything had to be earned by work and by coin. If you wanted better gear, find or buy it. If you want new skills, hire someone to teach you. As you said, there was no fanfare or special item won when he defeated deathspots at the end. They got their bounty, a pat on the back for a good job, and got back out there. Grimgar took the fantasy isekai genre and made it feel real, not like a video game. That and the watercolor aesthetic will always make me remember this show. The waifus are also top-tier too.
@Ayvhel2 жыл бұрын
I'm with you every step of the way, only exception is that I like the slower pacing, makes it feel very "slice of life-y", I'd say it fits with the rest of what they are trying to do. But as you said, one thing I really don't like is when video game elements are incorporated into a fantasy world that doesn't need them. I think there are better isekai when it comes to epic fantasy, or dark fantasy, and so on... but nothing else really captures the down to earth, realistic feel of Grimgar.

As a fantasy genre lover and an addict mmo player, this anime has a special place in my heart not only because how beautiful it is or how good the story was but everything in this anime is just perfectly balanced to create what we can call a perfect fantasy genre, the story would have been perfect for an mmo setting like sometimes with a million player playing the same story it's just not feel good that the story is about being a chosen one to save the world while millions played the same story, the story of surviving and growing with your friend in a fantasy world is just what we need in an mmo, we can see that in grimgar everyone play and living the same fantasy life while in the other isekai genre only the main character play the main story.

The art style was astounding to me when it came out. Every environment shot felt like it was genuinely its own piece of art, whereas the character designs were simple and fit their respective classes even before we got to know the characters themselves. It really was a masterpiece of an anime in my eyes, not just for its art direction, but the sense of morality in the world that they made. They all struggle to kill even a goblin, but when they do kill it, it's not seen as a victory, but instead a moment of reflection. They just killed a sentient being that was trying to do the exact same thing as them; survive. The grief that comes with the loss of any life usually only affects those who cared for said life, but as this story tries to show, its also the cause of some of the strongest bonds, as we only learn to value things after we experience what life is like without them. That sense of mortality despite their seemingly otherwise simplistic life is what, to me, makes the story so great. They learn to appreciate everything, simply because anything can be taken away.
@Ayvhel2 жыл бұрын
A lot of series pay lip service to this, the whole "they are just like us", but few manage to make the human/monster conflict feel like it's two sides of sentient beings just trying to survive. That leads to great moments of reflection, momments of introspection, and moments of development for these characters. And all of it is absolutely beautiful.

Oh man I love grimgar. Because the use of the isekai plot augments the plot. As they learn and grow, they forget they weren't from grimgar, and they're letting go of the feeling of loss that they feel from coming to this new land. Speaking of loss. That's the main theme, dealing with grief and loss, and it handles it pretty maturely. It's handled with a genuine touch. It's well written and has purpose. Which makes it so amazing in my book.

I think the reason it is so much better than most isekais is that it flows much more like a novel would. The pacing truly feels like I'm reading a novel instead of shoving a harem at us and giving us an insanely OP main character with no build up or character growth.

It's cruel because it feels so realistic. Death usually used as cheap tearjerker or plot device, it's sure have some part of 'plot device' to make the cast grow, but they did it naturally so it doesn't feel cheap that it makes me actually cry haha.

Grimgar had a great foundation with a grand variety of characters that had distinct personalities and specialties. Unfortunately the foundation building lasted 12 episodes and nothing was really achieved outside of minor victories and improvements and lacked any major development. Honestly it felt about as exciting as tying my shoes in the morning before work.
@Ayvhel2 жыл бұрын
I do agree that this feels like the prologue to a much larger story, and it's the one anime I always think of "what if it got another season?", so much to develop, so much for these characters to grow, and not enough time given.
@gutroo2 жыл бұрын
Thats what makes grimgar so good tho. In life you dont have major victories one after another, especially when you are starting something new. You have to grow bit by bit in order to achieve something significant, thats why you need just a little bit of patience and thats why when things actually happen later on in the series it feels so satisfying
@aaronbredon29482 жыл бұрын
@@gutroo one of my favorite movies is "Bad Day at Black Rock". It is a movie about an insignificant town in the middle of nowhere and what happened there. But nobody, including the main character (played superbly by Spencer Tracy), is important. Nothing significant in the world is changed by what happened. And there is no happy ending - it literally is a bad day for everyone involved. This is what Grimgar is - nobody in the story is important. Nobody is irreplaceable. And no matter what happens, it doesn't affect the world at large. But what happens matters to the party and the people they know.

I had watched this anime when it came out, and after recommending it to a friend and rewatching it just a couple months ago gave me the need to read all the volumes of the LN. The story expands a lot on the world of grimgar, i mean A LOT. Cities, different races and magic, other continents, they expand the very narrow view of humans=good and goblins/kobolds/orcs/undead=bad, into a very interesting mesh of cultures and friendships. You understand that that view is valid and make sense at the beginning, but until they explore more and more you get a better grasp of the world they live in. The story is very adventure heavy, but also focuses a lot on getting through hardships and danger, and there are remainders that NO ONE is safe in this world, and everyone is just trying to make the best of their situation and survive. There is death, pain, betrayal, trauma, but also comradery, love 😏, trust and loyalty inside the party and with other groups as well. Honestly, what a ride this LN was for me, im so excited for the vol. 19 to come out on December.

Grimgar is like an MMORPG where death is permanent and you as a starting adventurer. You value your life more, learn from it, and survive on how much you can (much like our world in some ways). Even with knowledge about your enemy, there are still things and circumstances that threatened your existence. First time i watched it i was like, what is this? And as i progressed i get the sense of feeling that i kinda get them. This is us, the story of our everyday lives told in a fantasy world. The struggles, the pain, and the things and people we lost along the way.
@Ayvhel2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a very "mundane" take on fantasy, at first I think for most people it's going to take a bit to adjust, just because of how grand fantasy stories tend to be, but once you start getting into the very human struggles of the cast it's just fantastic.
@shivamarya52252 жыл бұрын
its not like mmorpg, theres no game screen or weird game like level up mechanics, its more like realistic Dnd, even though they have skills from training its hard for them to adapt to this new world and new life and a weird feeling about killing and this adapting creates a weird awkwardness so their team just doesent work even though they are much more powerful than the simple goblins they try to kill, they take two weeks before they actually kill their first goblin as an icebreaker. Even when they have the skills they cant just do it like in a game, and they even have to eat, drink, wash their clothes, go to bathroom and so they live near a water source on which the city is based around, which is less populated as people are moving elsewhere. Even the goblins story is explored who was there to fill drink water and their families and society in the back up story of the novel and manga, it's all very well done
@yametekudasai39732 жыл бұрын
@@shivamarya5225 pretty sure there's a lot of them in their world that got isekai'd or something to Grimgar that takes the mm in mmo . And everything has somewhat of a similarity to roleplaying because they got jobs, skills, and even guilds and teachers. Probably the only thing stopping them from comparing it (they actually did a couple of times) to an mmo game is their lost memory of the past. They are awkward bcoz they are new to it like everyone else, not bcoz they are newbies, but bcoz they forgot or something made them forget. Didn't really read the manga after the anime scope so, i know less. Doing something drastic or new knowledge from the old to Grimgar is probably the point of making them forget. The society of monsters are obviously shown by the goblins in the anime. They are like the humans, they socialize and strategize. They even have families, friends, and share the fear of dying like the humans do.
@shivamarya52252 жыл бұрын
@@yametekudasai3973 DnD also has the same classes because RPG games took their classes from DnD games and many of their elements. I sai the same thing about the awkwardness, they have the skills, they were trained by different guilds and certainly have the skills to kill a goblin but cant because there's just an awkward thing about so they keep making mistakes on the job while everyone else has moved on other areas, but they get a major confidence boost after killing their first goblin, its not like a game because you dont have that awkwardness, if you are higher level in a turn based RPG or have a lot higher stats than your enemy then you can easily defeat them in video games. They dont have memories of their past world because with all the modern knowledge everyone would just start using that old knowledge to make money and introduce new things to this fantasy world like doctor stone and defeat the whole purpose of it. They also have to eat and drink carry manage to carry supplies and return to their home at the end of the day which limits where how far they can go and each weapon has different weight and requires different fighting technique to handle and can get stuck or blunt and dirty after a fight. I wouldnt compare it to a game when its that realistic

I love Grimgar. I think it was truly a well executed critique of the fantasy genre, and when I watched it, I wished more than anything for a second season. After years of reading the novels, however, I can confidently say that the anime ended exactly where it should have, Any farther, and it starts to lose what makes it so compelling in favor of a completely different story. A story that, while still very good, isn't what we all fell in love with. I mostly read now in the hope that it will find some part of what drew me to it in the first place. Thank you for the video. I watched this show a few years back and still remember it vividly. Unlike alot of other shows in general this one felt very visceral in a sense. Especially in weight in combat/ action scenes, and emotions during stressful scenes. The biggest strength this anime has is it feels like a slice of life, masqurading as an Isekai. Another anime/ light novel that does this is my personal favorite Goblin Slayer. On the serface it seems like a typical dark fantasy series. However the more you read the series it becomes more apparent that it's a slice of life for this group of adventurers in small town. One little detail I loved was when the larger warrior was carving wooden planes even though due to the groups memory loss they had no idea what it was.
@Ayvhel2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, one thing I've always liked about Goblin Slayer is how the story surrounds "an" adventuring party, and not "the" adventuring party. The cast doesn't need to be special to the world for it to be special to the viewers. And grimgar captures that perfectly for me. They might not be "the heroes", but they are "our heroes". As viewers this connect us so much to them, add to that the little details of humanity and of their former lives and it makes for a beautiful story.

One of the best Isakai ever conceived and yeah I didn't get it at first. Like, why do I love this so much? But it's the human element they capture so very well. It's crazy good.

I think I started to like it more and more every rewatch, just something about it.

I can't believe you conveyed my thoughts exactly. Whenever deaths happen in the show I feel like nothing happened and something is important is happening at the same time. Deaths doesn't help the party magically unlock some op power, nor does he died in an epic way. But at the same time I feel so heavy inside. It really is just deaths. I ended up reading the novel as well it's still amazing

I'm moving on to the novels soon, the way this story deals with death hits just right for me, and apparently I'm not alone on that.
