Ok, I hear you, putting a spear tip on a bow may mess with the weight distribution while shooting it, so it's a bad idea to do so... But why can't you just put two spear tips on both ends that weight the same?
@alexanderflack5664 жыл бұрын
Adding weight to any part of a bow outside of the grip is a bad idea. Adding a large amount of weight to the tips is a REALLY BAD idea, in that it would reduce your arrow speed significantly. If you want to make a 100 pound bow hit like a 50 pound bow and be likely to break on you, that's how you do it. There's a reason that real life bows are as thin as possible for a given draw weight, and none have much more than a few grams or so of extra material past the string nocks. Basically, it's like an axe versus a sword. An axe is lighter overall, but because the weight is near the tip, it's slower. The limbs of a bow need to be as fast as possible, so you want to reduce weight overall without reducing draw weight or making it too fragile, and you especially want the tips to be as light as you can make them.

@JustARandomMexican3 жыл бұрын
As a LARP/battle-game archer, it was really cool watching you come to the same conclusions that I naturally came to through actually fighting with a bow in close-quarters situations. Ideas from this video I can back-up: I use a very small rectangular strap targe on my (left) bow arm (small shield > no shield). The outer strap hooks under my thumb as you described. I always rest my arrows on the right side (away from the shield). I keep my back-up sword on my back and it's one-handed so I don't have to drop my bow to fight melee (fun note bow + shield both in one hand can block A LOT of attacks; good way to break your bow though and we simulate that in game). With a good sheath and practice, you can almost always draw your sword to threaten a melee attacker after missing your arrow. From your other videos: Adding a decent pauldron on your upper shield arm turns that entire arm into a wall of defense to block with (I have a leather one myself). Additionally, resting an arrow on the outside of the bow is almost always faster and speed is invaluable. But my opinion on the best way to use a bow in actual melee combat? Toss it at your opponent to tangle them up while you ready your sword (that's a bit hardcore for LARP though).

1) Another reason to have well-fitted mail: weight. Having those drooping sleeves (or too much in the midsection) is weight that you don't need and will tire you out faster. If you were salvaging a set of mail, and wanted it for yourself, you could pay part of the cost of fitting it to you with the parts of it that get removed in the process. 2) If you were going to put a heavy(ier) spearhead on a bow, you could put two on to balance out the weight. Many spears did that, putting a (usually smaller) spike on the back-end, which both made them easier to use and let you stab down without awkward maneuvering. 3) The fragility of a bow is dependent on the material it is made out of. Wooden bows (basically the only type we have from the Medieval period) are certainly not built to whack an enemy. Númenór (per the Unfinished Tales) seems to have had a weapon called a steelbow, likely a bow made of steel. I can easily imagine other fantasy cultures using metals or magical materials (natural or manufactured) to make very strong bows.

Exact same principle to rucking with things hanging off the back of your pack, uneven weight distribution inside the pack etc. The weight moving around means you constantly have to resist it and adjust for it. On wearing a shield with a bow: extending the shield away from your body of course voids most of the protection it offers, but what if you held the bow in your right hand? Holding the arrow on your shield arm, you would then be pulling the shield towards your body and making use of the protection while shooting. Then when you need to reach across your body for another arrow, you cover your front. On using a bow as a spear: I don't know that I'd personally feel okay using it while it's strung. You have to consider in that situation that the person running at you probably has something sharp and pointy in your hand and a wide variety of nasty things could happen if that string got cut in a fight. You could get whipped in the face by your own string which would probably end with you being incapacitated long enough to lose the fight, and the sudden straightening of the bow itself could likely throw off your balance as well. Unstrung, I think it would be fine though.

It used laminated leather with wood, bone and also metal in some cases. So the thing is to have the shield build into the armor itself, rather than cumber yourself by needing to hold or strap a shield somewhere. Here's a bit of thought for a thing about using a kite shield with a bow in that wall formation. If you had two lines of archers armed with shields creating a wall they could volley fire and retreat and take the place of each other. Also if such an army was prepared to commit to such a strategy the shields would most likely be optimized for this. having a slight cut out for the hand or even having that part be hinged would allow for better hand movement, and here's a quick thought I had. If you're going to be carrying the shield could you mount a quiver on the back side of the shield? In my mind this would make the act of pulling the shield in front of you to protect yourself also aid in quickly grabbing an arrow. This would also mean that a traditional quiver could be used for back up meaning the amount of arrows a wall formation could carry could really make it rain, (or even speciality arrows). Also if you have two lines going constantly back and forth I think there'd be a lot of psychological effects that could be done with simply coloring the shields alternating colors. It'd be memorizing. Now an army like this could commit entirely to be focused on ranged attacks basically never allowing the enemy to even get close to them, so a supplement I could see that would be equally devastating would be to have high poundage crossbows built into kite shields. Those guys would be the front line and stationary as the slow reload times of those would be countered by the hail fire of arrows. The crossbow men could then take aim at specific targets or calvary and equipping them with pikes and spears so when they run out of bolts they can continue as a defensive wall. I could see many ways an army committed to this style of fighting and warfare could use various tactics to overwhelm their opponents. Imagine a massive slithering line of colored shields constantly spewing out arrows volleys that block out the sun as it approaches you. Even worse if they light some of these arrows on fire then what? You got a slithering snake of shields that is spewing out pointy death.

There are historical records that show that the Natives of Florida used their bows as clubs. When the Spaniards came, they shot at them with arrows. When the Natives saw it didn't work (because of the armor) they quickly ran up to the troops and bashed their skulls in. (I don't remember if I'm right about this one) Floridian Natives used oak as their basis for their weapons, so you can imagine how hard a wooden club must have hit. These same records also say that the bows were so strong none of the Spaniard soldiers were able to restring them.

If youre enemy arent wearing any armor, you just need to cut at the bottom of youre string while aiming the spear head at the enemy after the string cut, the string should just flung and whip the enemy at critical hit. Though this technique only can be used 1 time and depends on your aiming skill and luck. Also you need to brought alot of string with you to perform this technique in multiple times. Its basically a one use whip.

I was thinking the same thing. Also if you planted the tower shield into the ground right in front of a bowman couldn't they use the top to stabilize a bow like the elves do in the two towers with the wall at helms deep? It would be a straight shot but it would still protect a bowman while they fire and when the enemy gets close enough shoot a volley or two the discard then bow and pull the shield out of the ground and fight sword and shield.

Very fun video. I just wanted to add a few things. Firstly, a good blacksmith could make a pair of lightweight bladed tips with the nocks built in, filed smooth so they won't damage the string, and then you wouldn't have to worry about throwing off the bow's balance. The tips could even be shaped to thrust straight forward once the string is attached. Secondly, although this would be effective at offense, I for one would hesitate to use the bow back to defend with. The bow backing doesn't take much damage to lose structural cohesion, and neither does the string. And although I have seen a modern bow repair using multiple layers of duct tape, I suspect a typical medieval war camp would find it difficult to repair such damage in the field. I'm curious whether a backing of thin medieval steel would survive normal usage as a bow and still protect the wood from sword blades. Thirdly, I'm thinking that the heaviest tip I'd even try putting on a bow would look like a relatively lightweight Partisan. It would take some testing, and you'd have to get a good partnership between a bowyer and a bladesmith to even try. But it would be interesting to see. Finally, I would look into alternative theories of shield construction if you're seriously looking into pairing one with a bow. I've seen Scythian and Japanese armor designs that include a wide, flexible shoulder pad which appears to serve the function of a shield, though typically they stop at the elbow. Perhaps something in that vein would provide some cover against return arrow fire, though I'm not sure how useful it would be in melee. Or possibly existing designs would work with some simple tweaks. Your round shield might work beautifully if it had a pair of leather straps so you weren't trying to use the center grip. For that matter, the kite shield might have worked much better if the curvature followed your arm rather than running across it. But it might need a shallower curve, calibrated to only just contact the bow from a proper archery posture. Then to take cover, you could simply raise your forearm to put the shield in that position. I made a D&D character once who used a bow with a shield, which I imagined as a two-strap shield similar in design to a heater shield, made of wicker and the hide of a beast he slew on the adventure. But in the game, I was mostly using the shield in melee, and of course, game characters don't have to worry quite so much about arrow fire as real-life soldiers.

A handful of ideas for you: Longswords: - Time for your special longsword back-scabbard Shad! - Would it make sense to have a longsword on the other side, in line with your quiver? It might be slower to draw but would be out of the way. Shields: - The kite shield is at a strong angle when you draw, you could have a thinner one to save weight because the angle increases the protectiveness, can even deflect arrow (not ideal in formations but good for adventurer). - alternatively, you could strap it at an angle to compensate, but might be worse in close combat. - how about a buckler sized shield that attaches to the bow near the hand and has a gap for the arrow and aiming? in a siege, aiming over a battlement it could be as protective against projectiles as an arrow loop. - also, I noticed the shield catches your sword a lot (even the one-handed sword), again, maybe have it in a back-scabbard / on the other side (same disadvantages of course). attachment weapons: - how about a dagger sized blade attached below the end of the bow and extending past the end? could apply a bit more force as the bow is thicker at the attachment point and you could use the lightness of the bow and the long blade to take off fingers, hit exposed necks, stab at the face etc. - maybe you could have a thin piece of steel down the length of the bow (the bow's shape and draw would need to be built to account for it) to parry without damaging the bow. - you could attach a small mace head to the end of the bow, maybe the size of a sword pommel, with the length and lightness of a longbow, a hit to the helmet would really suck. Arrows: - if you have an arrow nocked but the person is too close to get a full release, you could use the palm of your draw hand to force the arrow into them with some additional force from the string. (they'll probably stab you at the same time so not much use) - if you don't have a backup weapon, you could use the bow in one hand to parry strikes aside and stab with an arrow in the other hand. - how effective would it be to throw an arrow at short range like a war dart, say at the attackers face?

The thing I would like to add, if your enemy has a sword and you use a bow-spear, then the String would be the first thing that is cut. If strings are somewhat cheap and you have several of them then it won't matter.

You could add a round guard at the top (albeit it would further slow down the bow and cost momentum imbued into the arrow)

Then again, the moment the string is cut the spear head will spring towards the attacker. It may be one use only, but the surprise could net you a big advantage or even a kill.
@CowCommando4 жыл бұрын
It takes time and leaves you very vulnerable to string a longbow, so you'd have to be sure no close threats remain before restringing. If there was a second attack wave after the one where your string was cut, you'd be in big trouble. Then again, if the battle has gone such that two waves of infantry are charging your archers then I'm guessing things are going poorly for your side already anyway.

Watching this, I can't help but think of a new medieval weapon. A longbow attached to a big shield with a hole in it that you can aim and fire through. The shield's still aimed at your enemies when firing the bow, and the bow also doubles as the shield's grip.

If you have an attachment on the opposite end of the bow that was the same mass as the spearhead, then the two should cancel each other out, eliminating the kick entirely. That would allow for bigger spearheads to be attached. thought about archers and no back up weapons probably better off stabbing the guy with the arrow then using the bow as your weapon

Wow, I can't believe that bow weighs 100 pounds. Shad must be really strong to be able to carry it like that.

Funnily enough, when you were talking about formations of bowmen with shields at around the 20 minute mark, it actually reminded me of a fantasy kingdom I wrote a few years where their archers did that. They used very Viking-esk shields and would just strap them to their shoulder or set them down to fire. And their archers would do volleys where one person would hold their shield for themselves and the man behind them before switching off. Sadly, didn't write them sidearms so a static formation of unarmored and unarmed archers is begging for cavalry
