I know you said you wouldn't continue with Dune. However, I do recommend reading Dune: Messiah, as it it's the "true" ending of Dune. Herbert originality intended it to be one long book, but the publishers made it two. The themes/ideas behind Dune only really pay-off in Messiah

Hi Matt, big fan of the channel. Can I recommend you read the Troy trilogy by Gemmell. I know you read a few similar books, and that was very much what he was going for in his early years, but the Troy trilogy was the last thing he wrote and he was very much at the height of his writing prowess. Also his first attempt at what I’d call epic fantasy, and genuinely one of the best series I’ve read. His take on Hector and Achilles and Odeyseus is brilliant. Anyway, sure you’ve got a huge read list, just hoping you haven’t shelved Gemmell for good.

I don't get the down talking on the sequels of Ender's Game. They are tonally very different from the first book. But Card said he always wanted to write the story told in the sequels, but his publisher convinced him to write Ender's game as an introduction to this universe. And although I love Ender's Game, I think I love its sequels more. They are much more political and philosophical and deal with religion and guilt in very interesting ways. They are really good character studies. Really, don't believe the reviews and give the sequels, at least the first sequel, a try. They are very different books, but they are thought provoking and great. Much more than the first book.

I wish I could understand what people saw in Faithful and Fallen that I missed. Except for some exceptional battle scenes and one very fun plot line, I felt it was a solid B and I had to drag myself through parts of it. It actually bums me out that I didn’t enjoy it more. For some reason Bound and Broken is working so much better for me, and I think the two series have a lot of similarities in terms of what the authors are trying to do.

It might be the writing style. I don't know about Ryan Cahill, but in the first two F and F books, Gwynne struggles with prose. If not, maybe it was not connecting to characters or the lack of originality. Gwynne didn't exactly reinvent the wheel. He uses a lot of tropes, but I think he did it pretty well. It might not have worked for you tho. At least you had some fun.
@WilliamMorrison-rp6ws8 ай бұрын
@@KALtheLostie108that was my issue with it. I still liked it, but I would constantly get annoyed at his quick paragraph breaks. I started to feel like he didn't have enough experience as a writer to have a long section of prose, which is fine but personally began to grate on my own tastes. Regardless, every book was a solid 4 stars for me, but Wrath was a 2 for a certain character choice that made me almost DNF it toward the end.
@KALtheLostie1088 ай бұрын
@@WilliamMorrison-rp6ws Uh oh. I haven't read Wrath yet, so please don't spoil it. Personally, I'm loving the series, but I do understand your problems with it. You could try out his Bloodsworn series. I've only read the first book, and I liked it quite a bit. The prose there is definitely more defined, though it still has short-ish paragraphs. The difference is that he manages to pack in a decent amount of description with just a couple sentences. There were several moments where I stopped and thought, "Wow, I can perfectly picture and even feel this, and he only used a couple dozen words." The characters, with the exception of Orka, aren't as good as Faithful and the Fallen's, but that's just my opinion.

Hard to know yet how our tastes align - I think your on the money on Locke Lamora and Wheel of Time, but I put far more worth in Conan and Dresden and the Lord of the Rings. Edan I'd put higher also, but I might see the first book as a B. Still many series ahead to try on yet.

Other series to try that are under the radar mostly: The Others series and the follow-up series The World of the Others by Anne Bishop (elementals, shapeshifters, vampires, blood-prophets, mysterious and terrifying "others," science--alternative world on Earth); Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (kind of YA but so much better; an unusual mix of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and fairy tale; Cinder in the first book is sort of a cyborg who wants to be an engineer); Safehold series by David Webber (mostly sci-fi but takes place on a planet that's highly religious and where technology has been forbidden for centuries; too complex to explain the sort of medieval world at first, but each book is huge with so many characters and settings; lots of naval and land battles); Consortium of Chaos by Elizabeth Gannon (a ridiculously fun series in which the Supervillains come out on top of the Superheroes; theres pathos and trauma depicted by some of the villains but they are so funny with their individual quirks and dialogue; the so-called heroes are mostly bad people while the villains are not all that evil; really interesting superpowers displayed by each villain in their own books). Sorry, so long-winded..
