I think it depends on cost and what their reasonable expectations are. Most people, even console gamers, have never even seen a steam deck. There's been about 3M steam decks sold. If Switch, PS4/5, XBox One/Series had only sold 3M units, they would have exited the console market completely. WiiU sold 14M units and was a colossal failure. Vita sold around 13M units and was a colossal failure. Dreamcast sold 9M and put Sega out of the hardware game. If Valve goes into it saying "If we sell 8M of these, it's a success to us' then yeah, it won't be a failure. But if they go in expecting to compete even with the XBox Series, they'll be sorely disappointed.
@Jandro10832 күн бұрын
@@WhiteG60 Wii U failed due to software, the reason most consoles fail. They can release a Steam Machine at a $500 price tag and I think it'll do well. Again, the original one failed because it couldn't play most of your Steam library, but that's not the case anymore. And this is coming from a console player who made the jump thanks to the Steam Deck. It's the only console I currently own. I almost made the jump back with the first Steam Machine, but due to compatibility issues and no crossplay games at the time, I held off until now.

Advantages of a steam console over other consoles: - No windows license cost - Access your existing games library - Upgradable components - Modding and fixing encouraged - Cheaper games - Larger library of games to purchase - Desktop mode - Could be used as a media center Probably more advantages, but for me the biggest is that I'm tired of re-buying games every console generation.

I do like the Deck and playing games via Steam, but it's just not the same as being able to plug in a cartridge or spin up a disc without waiting ten hours for a download. And yes... I know some titles release unfinished - like the PS5 issues with Jedi Survivor until after a 100GB patch. Fairly rare in the console space (very common in the PC space, since it's harder to pre-test all PC hardware combinations than it is to run benchmarks against two or three console standards)... certainly consoles aren't immune to it, but they still have the base game on disc.

By that I mean controls need to be well integrated and video must reproduce at its maximum quality, with no degradation. The idea is to have a pleasant experience and being able to switch from one experience to another.

I have hooked up my gaming PC to my TV via an optical HDMI cable and do screen mirroring with my 4k monitor. I run nobara linux that boots directly into steam big picture mode. I turn on the PC, grab my controller and just start playing. Feels like a console and the user experience is top notch. And I would still buy a steam console for the bedroom. 😅

Does it make sense to buy an SD OLED still? When one hears all the “Rog Ally X this!” and “possible SD2 that!” one with few dollars gets worried

The steam deck is a lot of fun with a lot of customization. I spent the first two days thinkering before I ever seriously gamed.

I think it would be pretty cool if Valve got into the physical release market too, I know it is a bit counter intuitive. I would love to own official Valve released physical copies of games, no big box type product just the basic case and game. I kind of wish they would make a Steam Deck light also, just a smaller version of the Deck, of course with more limited ability, you just have to know what you are getting, I have many games that would work well on such a device. I love my Steam Deck but I don't take it with me to work due to the size, I mostly play my 3ds in that case. Valve just rocks, they already nail everything. Really I could not ask more of them.

Valve didn't try making its own console before. It tried making an OS and partnering with 3rd party PC manufacturers to sell gaming PCs that run its OS.

I was surprised there were no server issues with Marvel Rivals. Recalling back to OW2. And Overwatch should have known and prepared for it, because it had an existing playerbase and some idea of what they'd have to deal with. The monetization in Marvel Rivals is great too. The first thing I check is the scummy stuff. In a lot of games there's that trend of pricing an item at for example, 500 premium currency, but the 5$ gets you 400 or 450 of that currency, forcing you to buy two of that pack to get that one item you wanted, and wasting money. In Rivals its a 1 to 1 exchange, PLUS there's the option for getting 100 premimum currency for 1$, if you really want to be precise. Its awesome. The battlepass thing is nice too, although I've never seen much value in battlepasses in games. The only reason I didn't give them any money yet is because the performance is absolutely abysmal, and I don't know if I'll be playing much if they don't fix it. Unfortunately its following a lazy dev + UE5 game combo trend a lot of other games seem to be following lately, where they're replacing optimization with upscaling and relying on your 2000$ GPU to fix the problems. But upscaling looks like crap, and I don't have a 2000$ GPU, and I won't for a few years still, so... xD

Might give my Steam deck to my brother if the steam box actually does happen. 90% of the decks playtime I've spent docked because it's my first pc and I liked playing bigger games like MH World, GTA4 and Payday 2 with HDR.

I’m all for a set top steam device. I have a higher end PC / dual 4090s / 64core CPU I use for my job as a VFX artist that I also use for gaming in my downtime but found really enjoy the simplicity and convenience of my steam deck. So much so that I’m willing to take a degrade in the visual fidelity for the other benefits that the steam deck offers.

I'm so excited for a steam console. I have a gaming PC but would love something more powerful than the steam deck for couch gaming / couch co-op / party games. The process for streaming from my pc to my TV is always cumbersome and it takes way too long to get controllers set up for 4p couch gaming.

PC gaming is better than console gaming, it's just harder to get into, but with the Steam Deck and Steam Box that's no longer a problem. but this is mainly going to be a problem for Sony. Microsoft is trying to make everything in to an Xbox so they won't be affected by the Steam box. And Nintendo has so many niches in the market, with their focus on gameplay, their kid friendly games, the fact that Nintendo went fully handheld, and their existence in other entertainment industries such as their theme parks, a museum, their movies, and millions of merchandise.

I hope they make the new Steam machine able to stream local media files in a user-friendly way. Let it replace android boxes and be my media PC as well as be a PC/Console hybrid.

If the bring out 1080p box at around 600, 1440p box at around 900 and a 4k box at around 1300 that vould be amazing but pricing would be very difficult it more likely be 800, 1200 and 1800..

I hope this comes true, and soon. Backwards compatibility is a big deal for me. I hate how PlayStation has treated their library and I also dislike windows. If this could play Roms as well it’s the icing on the cake

That split contriller is interesting. Instead of misplacing my controller, I'll be able to misplace half of it twice as often.
@KatSoEpicКүн бұрын
If your talking about what's shown at 2:06, it's a leaked vr controller for the deckard, split controllers are the default for vr so both our arms can be tracked making vr more Immersive and intuitive, this controller is not meant for pc use, instead it's mean to be used solely in vr games.

I hope if they release a steam machine 2.0 it has CEC + Wake with controller + 4k upscale support like the PS5, through something like DLSS or the AMD equivalent. Then I’d be 100% on board

Valve is destined to win this war, because microsoft is going to basically force gamers to change their system. The sheer amount of settings, spywares and software we might not even be aware of is astounding in windows. This will make gamers to choose SteamOS for playing and MAYBE have a bootloader for windows if needed for work.

Valve didn't fail, they counted on OEMs that had no skin in the game to follow through and they didn't do it. half of them stopped shipping the "Steam Machine" they made with SteamOS without giving it much of a chance and most of them made overpriced underpowered PCs and slapped the Steam Machine logo on it. I don't think Valve should be held accountable for that.

Looking forward to what Value has to bring out. I was interested in that hori controller but after seeing the layout, I wouldnt get one. I'd be interested in a steam console, depending on price. Im still looking forward to a steamOS general ISO, and im sure a lot of people are also waiting for this. They're only going to help Linux gain market share once they do that, as people look at migrating off Win 10 due to end of life, and possibly off Win 11 due to all the recall and other AI features. Lastly, 2:18 contextually, it sounded like you used the term 'light-years' as a measurement of time. Its a measurement of distance. I try not to pick at people's choice of words, but this is one of the few that always gets to me when its used wrong.

if the console is like the steam deck in compatibility, you will be able to download pretty much ANY game, even if they aren't on steam, or if they are for another console with an emulator, it'll be THE console, no other console will be as console as this console

I would buy it if it supports physical media, outside of GOG, I trust no online store to actually give me the ownership over the product I buy, and not one day wake up and see the software I paid for is now not in my library because the publisher decided that we nedd to re-buy version 1.01 of the same game.

I'm not so optimistic. PC builders margins are already razor-thin, so this Valve Console PC is either gonna be prices similarly, underpowered or locked down to avoid external stores/non gaming use. The only possible way that it may succeed and not be a menace to players is by setting a target PC configuration, and optimise cost on that specific configuration, but this tactic will be copied not long after the lunch by every other pc company

Why make a set top box? Just make a dual gpu or dual power mode steam deck. Use vulkan's multi-gpu functionality with proton and allow it to scale up with up for 8 GPUs. Allowing you to daisy chain decks through a thunderbolt/oculink switch, leverage VFIO/SR-IOV too
@majorgnu2 күн бұрын
Having multiple GPU support is one thing. Having games that make use of those multiple GPUs is another. I'm almost certain you can't transparently split the work meant for one GPU into multiple GPUs. That's the kind of thing that typically requires specific application support.
@hypothalamusjellolap81772 күн бұрын
@@majorgnu Okay, what if like proton (wine jit function calls) the rendering was done using a virtgl style gpu which then made calls to distributed gpus. Like one GPU renders, the other does XeSS or similar upscale. Like a laptop where the discrete GPU, eg AMD 6300m has no outputs and uses the output of the intel APU. When it comes to multiple gpus then we get into XDMA concepts through virtgl.
