I think it was a good reason to avoid the "How many fights..." question because I think it's a low key tactic to parlay the question as a direct attack on you as a person or your skills; basically something to use as an argument. I mean I can see why someone will want to know so it helps comfort the idea of how good a person may be, but you were right. The skill and merit of a teacher relies solely upon the students in any endeavor. If you walk into a boxing gym and even the "top students" can't box worth a rat's ass, then you have a right to place assumption that the teacher, in spite of the system, is not that good.

Good way to address all of questions that have bombards you through the years. However, I have a feeling you will be asked the very same ones regardless lol. Good job at explaining things in detail Sifu. Good job at asking the questions Chris, I think you missed your calling as boxing/mma reporter. Looking forward for more online lessons, it's always fun to share your techniques and breakdowns with other martial arts enthusiasts.

War stories from martial artists that I feel are basically bragging, even if they do it subtly, tend to be red flags for me. Not only may they be exaggerating, but it also raises the question for me, if they are...why are they exaggerating? What do they want from me? On the other hand war stories that I feel are honest and come from a place of wanting to make a point the teller believes in, or to teach something the teller believes in, especially if they are told in-person or in a family type class, those I've really benefitted from hearing. But, online war stories? I don't see much good coming from telling those. A really important part of telling stories is increasingly being lost now that we get most of our stories from screens. And that is the interaction, verbally or non-verbally between the storyteller and the listener. I've been in the middle of telling a story to someone and got the feeling that this person was taking this story the wrong way, or in a way that didn't feel right, and so I changed the tone and sometimes adjusted the content of the story. Online, that doesn't happen. People are taking things all kinds of ways and you are not part of the equation except as the subject of their reactions. It's not a very organic format for telling certain types of stories. Personal war stories perhaps being among of them. Long way of saying: Right on Adam. Good call. Keep up the great work and post at any frequency that feels good to you brother. ;~) GB

Hello Adam, and thanks for the video! I listened to one of your previous podcasts about finding a reliable training partner and I tried (and failed) to find one since then. (And also I'm gonna move soon, so then I can start looking for somebody anew). When you said in the video that Chris was your training partner (rather than 'just' your student) I was surprised, because I always thought that my training partner would need to be as me, or at least about as good (I don't mean to offend Chris, but your are obviously much better, which is also no surprise taking all your training into account). So my question is: how much can (or even should) the levels of me and my partner differ? And would you recommend having a training partner from another discipline? Thanks in advance!

Most of my training partners and students were black belts or teachers of other systems before we met, so the diff discipline for me is never an issue. As for skill difference that depends on what i am working on. If i am doing fix co-operative drills, then almost any skill level is ok , just a matter of getting use to it. If I am doing semi random drills ie flow drills, chi sau , sparring etc then more skill is require. If its full Random non co-operative work, then in almost all cases , it will take years to built someone to that level so can train it together.
