Ron Howard directed a lot of great films; among my favorite are this one, as well as COCOON (1985), PARENTHOOD (1989) and APOLLO 13 (1995). There is no Irish Anti-defamation Organization - everyone picked on the Irish, especially themselves - Which reminds me of what my Irish grandfather used to say, "The difference between Shanty-Irish and the Lace Curtain Irish is the Lace Curtain Irish take the dishes out of the sink before peeing in it."

As we enter a presidential election year, if you would like to pursue a political theme, in the sense of "Mr. Smith goes to Washington", without partisanship, and unlikely to lead to ugly political divisiveness- I highly recommend " The Last Hurrah". It's one of John Ford's last films. It deals with the urban political culture made by Irish immigrants, and how it is fading out after WW2. It stars Spencer Tracy, Basil Rathbone, John Carradine, Donald Crisp, Jeffrey Hunter. An excellent film.

What's most remarkable with this movie is the radical change it makes towards the end, when Tom Cruise leaves the train to join the wagon trail towards the west. The film goes from a rather conventional adventure story into a fully fledge Western movie. The camera is lifted up and places the horizont on the lower half of the picture, the landscape goes wide and the action broad. It's as if the American production team finally found their roots and lifts the movie. Fantastic.

Another excellent English film is THE ROAD DANCE that came out in 2021. The locations remind me a lot of the early scenes in FAR & AWAY. I'm not a big fan of this movie, but it gets Tom a Western credit. So what kind of spider was it. Wolf spiders are smaller but look a bit like Tarantulas. Grass and Recluse are smaller still, but some would call them big. Fascinating! One more thing. It's said that wherever you are, spiders are never more than a few feet away. I'm guessing it has to do with density and population. I haven't SEEN one in my home in years. Thanks for watching.

This was my favorite childhood movie in the early 90's. This film is criminally underrated imo. The accents received harsh criticism, but i just don't see it! I always thought they were both brilliant...in fact name a more electric chemistry between characters in any film? I probably watched it 100 times as a child, but love it every bit as much as an adult. Two people from different walks of life, learning from, and ultimately needing each other. Also, one of the last films with that true sweeping, epic, western vibe(aside from the also superb "legends of the fall"). Super reaction too! Subbed!!!

Shannon's house in this movie - Kilruddery House, is in my hometown of Bray Ireland , and it and it's gardens are more impressive than depicted in the film. This movie was much maligned on it's release, but I think it has aged quite well, although it is a strange beast - part western, part historical, action, adventure and romance. A nice bit of light-hearted escapism. Love the reaction again Madison.

Did you take a picture of the spider? Not to be a one upper so think of this as a cautionary take. If you're ever kayaking and you lose focus and turn back to look in the direction of travel and you a giant spidersaurus strung between reeds in the water, don't break too hard or you'll flip. It would have been better to hit the spider head on abd push it under the kayak or even risk it landing on the kayak. Because when I fell into the lake for a split second underwater with eyes open I thought I saw an alligator snapping turtle. So then I didn't want to touch bottom nor break the surface, but had to do both. After I recovered, all wet, backpack in the water, months later I read about that lake had a case of brain eating amoeba. So, just run over the spider.

This movie gets a lot of flack for being too "Oirish" with people talking about dodgy accents etc. but they're missing the point. I'm Irish going back a 1,000 years and I say that they're taking it too seriously. Just like "The Quiet Man" it's a romantic romp with a nod to myths and legends and is not meant to be a documentary. I worked close to the "Boston dockyard" (filmed in Dublin behind the Guinness storehouse) and the Boston brothel area (filmed in Temple Bar in Dublin) and the set was open to the public when not filming. There were huge tax concessions for filming in Ireland back then and lots of filmmakers took advantage of tax break..
