The game starts with a cinematic showing protagonist Jason Brody on vacation with a group of friends in Bangkok celebrating Jason's younger brother Riley on getting a pilot license. As part of the vacation they decide to take a skydiving trip. They land on a pirate-infested island, and are taken prisoner by a pirate lord named Vaas. Vaas plans to extort ransom money from their parents, then sell them into slavery. With the help of his older brother Grant, Jason breaks out of captivity, but Grant is killed by Vaas in the escape. Jason is rescued by a man named Dennis, who is part of the Rakyat, the island natives who suffer due to the activities of the pirates. Dennis recognizes Jason's potential as a warrior, and gives him the tatau, the tattoos of a Rakyat warrior. Jason then helps the Rakyat in a number of missions and ends up finding one of his friends, Daisy, at the house of Dr. Earnhardt. Impressed with Jason's prowess, the Rakyat allow him to be the second outsider to enter their sacred temple (Dennis was the first being born in Liberia) and their leader Citra initiates him into the tribe, after Jason finds and returns the Silver Dragon knife, a Rakyat relic, having seen it in a previous dream.

Far Cry 3 is a timeless masterpiece. On its surface it’s another rescue FPS. But once you start playing, you start going down the same rabbit hole Jason falls into. In the time I’ve played it, I’ve noticed there other important themes: Insanity, addiction, and manipulation. As it was portrayed in Alice in Wonderland, everything was mad, or irrational, even Alice. Both Jason and Alice deny those however and both begin to indulge in the fact they’re the only ones who are in control of their environment. Jason does this by capturing outposts, killing pirates, and taking drugs. Which leads to the theme of addiction. Far Cry 3 is a game self aware, meant to draw in the player. The Rook Islands are said to be a place where you can do anything, much like a video game world. Buck even says, “I’m not playing the bloody game, you are. I’m just a spectator.” Under the influence of drugs, killing, and rituals, he seemingly becomes stronger, and thus becomes addicted to his role as savior of the islands. Of course, he was also easy for Citra and the Rakyat to manipulate. Dennis tells Jason he is special because he was given the Tatau. Citra lures Jason into the promise of power and glory for exacting his revenge of Vaas, and killing Hoyt in the name of the Rakyat. By the end of it all, Jason has become the perfect killing machine, just as Citra and the Rakyat intended. Thus you are left with a choice; save your friends, leave the island, and return to society from whence you came, or kill your friends (cutting you off from the last remnants of society), stay with Citra and let the insanity of the islands consume you entirely. Vaas said to Jason that insanity was doing the exact same thing over and over expecting things to be different. This is exactly what Jason was doing when he decided to continue his killing spree. But by the end of it all, things were barely any different. These make Far Cry 3 in my opinion one of the greatest video games of all time. In short: it’s like watching a movie written by Stanley Kubrick and directed by Michael Bay, and it didn’t suck.

You really gotta understand just what Jason has devolved into. No matter which ending you choose, you still basically lost. You choose to save your friends and leave the island, sure he may have won a battle by choosing to leave, but for how long would that last? How can a man who lived to party, drink, do all that stuff; become a jungle fighting demon killer, and proceed to go back to the decadence of "SoCal" in the US and live that life again? Put yourself in Jason's shoes for a second. You love partying, drinking, being an idiot for the sake of fun. Then you get dropped onto an island, crawling with money hungry, blood thirsty, psycho and depraved pirate junkies, where you are forced to fight for your life on a daily basis, kill dozens.. no.. HUNDREDS of people, (pirates or no) commit mass murder and horrible atrocities all across this island and being known as a warrior king essentially, only to come back to that care free land where nobody knows you or what you've done, who only care about (and I'm being extreme in this example but it is basically true) picking up their poodles from the dog spa, wondering which lamborghini they want to drive to Rebecca's party, and wearing the latest style and most expensive labels. Could you honestly say that you could do that and not go completely insane? I know I sure as shit couldn't.

I just realized that this whole story is kinda like Jason becoming Grant. Grant is reliable, dependable and strong. He managed to get out of his binds the first time he was captured. He even used his combat skills to help his brother. Meanwhile Jason. In the past he was confused, scared, weak and needed help from his brother sometimes even after Grant death. It was a slow process but, if you do choose the good ending, Jason is more similar to Grant now.

Jason definitely doesn't turn into Grant. Grant was an American soldier who never even saw any real action when on active duty. He was just a guy who enlisted in the military, and a good older brother. Jason turned into a sociopathic murderer who put the rush he got from killing above his friends and family. The dude was dismissive of his girlfriend on multiple occasions, and even originally planned leaving her and his friends to stay on the island so he can keep killing people. He was a horribly mentally distraught person who didn't realize what he was doing wrong until the end of the game.

That was a huge plot point for Jason's development and the games tone. Grant is the kinda veteran hero you'd usually play in these kind of games, instead you get his coward inexperienced younger brother. The trauma of grants death and Jason no longer being in his shadow are a driving force for Jason's head first jump into warriorship. Also considering their dad died sometime prior and Grant became the dad figure for his brothers as well , as told in flashbacks and character conversations. But playing Jason and not Grant is to parallel the players own experience in the game, and made Jason very relatable. Because most people IRL, aren't a Grant, but a Jason.

FarCry 3 is so compelling its ridiculous. Ubisoft used to be so mastercraft at making incredible stories. Then the tatau that Jason symbolised his skill as a warrior and hence, by having a physical tatau, it made sense that he was able to do a new thing. Now days its just a colorful circle in a menu with a number on it. The story used to build up with depth and an insane amount of wonder as youre introduced to the bad guy/guys that you know you will innevitably kill. Now the characters are just cartoon characters. Every action you made built into the themese that Farcry represents. Insanity, violence, and bloodlust for vengeance of some sort. Now its just shooting because haha car and person goes boom. Oh how far Ubisoft has fallen.

My only critiques of this game was I would've enjoyed a lot more dialogue between characters, all of them. Jasons journey becomes so overshadowed, you'd forget about him if you weren't playing as him. I loved his journey and circumstance as I it eerily paralleled with my own life. And tho Jasons life, motives, feelings and interactions with people feel overshadowed I don't mean to take away from Vaas. Vaas should've been around far longer and Hoyt shouldn't have felt like a chore. The duality between Vaas and Jason should've been the main central theme. The game attempted to tell that story but had Vaas much more elevated, yet still not as elevated as they both should've been. The trippy scenes and knife fights could've made much more sense, I get it, it's supposed to be trippy but not to the point of throwing logic completely out the window. Like vaas stabbing you or Hoyt's body guards just magically dying tho you were only fighting Hoyt. I hate the good endings treatment of citra, I would've liked a full "snapping out of it" scene where Jason just don't gaf bout her dying. And an epilogue would've been appreciated and almost necessary if all the above were fulfilled. Ending was too cliff hangy. I wouldve liked to know what really became of everybody and their feelings toward each other. I'm sure on the boat ride home, alone, wouldve been interesting as all your friends are conflicted between respect for you and fear of you. Don't get me started on the bad ending, but it's good for what it is. It's what Jason has coming if he did decide to be a tool and kill his friends and brother. So it deserves to be an unsatisfying ending.

I think the new far crys are good too. I enjoyed six and four rlly much. 3 was a bit annoying in game play but the story was still good. Every one says that fc3 is the best one, but honestly I think it was good cause Vaas but Imo 4 had better vibes.
