Thank you for talking about this. The Koreatown riots affected Koreans the worst, but it also affected every other Asian minority in California, and has defined the Asian American experience for many of us. Tensions and scars still remain between the Asian and black communities in SoCal. It's important to remember this.

Those roof koreans were the kris paranto, ghetto version of secret soldiers of Benghazi. The founding fathers would be proud!

How did it actually start, though? Were Koreans just caught in the middle?
@annnee640910 жыл бұрын
***** So blacks were protesting a brutal white police force against blacks and Koreans just got caught in the middle- specifically by blacks suddenly displaying violence against Korean-owned businesses (and to be fair or by Koreans mentally provoking blacks in some way)?

Long story short, before many Koreans emigrated to the United States, they already came over with deep stereotypes of blacks in inner city communities all based on media depictions of them. Once they started taking over failing businesses within South Central (particularly the liquor stores and convenience stores) with this mindset of the black community, there were some conflicts. The boiling point was reached when a Korean shop owner shot a teenage black girl for shoplifting (a pack of chewing gum, I think). This just so happened to occur shortly before the Rodney King incident that ultimately sparked off the LA Riots. Because of the outrage and anger of the black community, they of course took it out on the Korean community also.

I was 13 at the time, and my family's business (convenience store) sandwiched between Gardena and Compton got hit pretty bad during the Riots, but a week after, my parents opened doors, despite a vandalized store, and handed out bread and milk to the families that were effected by the Riots. It was a definitive moment for me.
