“It is difficult for a woman to define her feelings in a language which is chiefly made by men to express theirs.”
@Huifen99908 жыл бұрын
I remember this line, didn't that explain it all why the most famous poems are men??
@jonathanscullen7 жыл бұрын
Note: So God made the people speak many different languages so they could not work together on building the city and tower. Made by one man not men so you can't blame this one on the patriarchy. I understand that you think that woman are useless and had no influence on the evolution of language, but thankfully we have written proof and can blame this solely on one man.
@rockblueangel7 жыл бұрын
Hardy understood how difficult was life for women in his time and he tried to point it out in his novels by using this kind of lines.
@subramaniannk36507 жыл бұрын
So, language is sexist now! Lol
@GirladyLocks6 жыл бұрын
Actually, that depends on the woman. If she is emotionally intelligent enough to express her feelings with vocabulary, then this quote is pure rubbish. That's beside the fact that language was developed by all who spoke in the history of mankind. So in fact, this line *is* pure rubbish. I know plenty of men who have more trouble 'defining their feelings' in ANY language than most women I know.

I can tell most people leaving comments haven't read the book. The story is a lot darker, deep, and more complex than simply 3 guys fighting over a girl, and her having to choose. I don't think anyone who goes to see this will be bored. I personally can't wait!

Melissa Marcelloni I have read the book but my comments were only based on a comparison of this trailer to the 1960s film. Films don't always follow books faithfully, but I hope this one captures the spirit of it. The 1960s film is one of my favourites so my expectations for this one, aren't high but I don't want to prejudge it before I've seen it.

Melissa Marcelloni Funny thing is I have read this book maybe 7 or 8 times, it's always on any device I have. It's the most bearable and realistic romance novel I ever read, keep in mind I studied Literature. I think its the standard bearer for not just the romantic age or Hardy but romantic writing as a whole. Males need not find romantic writing cringe inducing neither should females allow themselves to become cesspits for unchecked emotions. I'm talking to you "Twilight" and "50 Shades" readers!!

But then there would be no story or allegorical message to convey. This is the story of the human condition to be weak, vane and selfish, despite a few who are somehow able to rise above these base and petty desires for instant gratification to uphold a higher standard of values that the rest of us might be inspired by. Too many people read stories and history as if they would choose less selfishly not knowing everything the reader is aware of. If we examine our lives, most of us have plenty of examples that should dispel this inaccurate notion of ourselves if we were to be completely honest. But most people are anything but honest, especially to themselves, despite striving for the ideal of “To thine own self be true.” What does that even mean other than selfishness to a person who is convinced by their own selfishness that what they are doing is in their best interest rather than a rationalization of an irrational situation that we need be true to validate our selfishness.

I thought the book was overrated. The only reason why I finished it was because the prose was gorgeous. But the characters were so infuriating. All of the men were terrible suitors. Gabriel came off as too submissive and way too overly attentive to Bathsheba, William was creepy (I don't think anyone can deny that) and Troy was just a straight up jerk. Despite that I would recommend the book just for the prose alone and the movie did a wonderful adaptation. It also has a beautiful sound track.

She was truly fantastic in that role. She was in every scene in a role that demanded that she express naivety, intelligence, pretentiousness, wonder, joy, and feelings of love and betrayal. But, like she said, he didn't ask again. She wasn't ready when he did the first time. It wasn't right until it was. The genius of the novel is that all the characters are so excellently formed and coherent. Everything they do makes sense for who they are, and yet they aren't stagnant. Bathsheba and Gabriel grow together and grow closer. If they hadn't been through all those trials, they wouldn't have witnessed each others' strength and determination and grown to respect each other as much as they did. And if she hadn't 'friend-zoned' him, they wouldn't have become friends, and wouldn't have had such a stable and deep base for their actual romance later on. Hardy writes amazingly about the power of love borne of deep friendship and mutual respect.

Its a nice movie with beautiful.picturisation of emotion , feeling and yes england too. Grabiel emotion was prevalent throughout movie but without dialogue.

I was bewildered after finishing the book and had just no idea who in the crowd could be madder than HER.

I kind of agree with you. I would also demand sweat equities for the work that I did in the farm. I certainly need more than love. But, I suppose another way to look at it is unconditional love.

Muhammad Sbahi really? Who wants to be the first when you can be the last one? In love that works best.

Such an Amazing movie!! Definitely a new favorite now!! I hadn't ever seen it till today! Loved it 💟 Wish she would have picked Gabriel from the beginning though. He really went through a lot waiting for her.

I genuinely like Carey Mulligan, which is rare, since I find Hollywood actresses in general so dissimulated in reality. And Matthias... handsome guy and great play , need to see the whole movie.

I have really high standards for this particular adaptation. Read the book which is a classic. Saw the full miniseries from 1998 which is just perfection. I wonder if this newest adaptation will hold a candle to the basis, and the '98 miniseries? I already dislike how Bathsheba does NOT have 'raven black hair' as in the book and '98 miniseries...which was also a plot point!

Lemon Drops well how does it compare the 1998 version? The '98 version is my benchmark for this T Hardy work so if this can't beat that I probably won't bother.

Kate Hyde I liked the movie, but yeah...nothing beats the 1998 miniseries. That was perfection.

I watched the film last night (20th August 2017) It was wonderfully romantic. However, now that I have bought the ebook for my Kindle, I must read that to understand the genius of the author: Thomas Hardy.
