God, I miss President Reagan and Nancy Reagan. They brought elegance, class, humbleness, and a feeling of positivity to Americans. We united as a country behind President Reagan and he made us believe that the best was yet to come. I had tears watching this video. I so wish we could relive this era. Nancy is truly so underrated. As they said at her funeral, "There would have been no President Reagan without a Nancy." God Bless!

President Ronald Reagan, such dignity, such tact, was so loved by so many including those charged with protecting him, so rare today in the service branch. What wasn't filmed or witnessed was the final moments after President Reagan's tomb was sealed, equipment and crypt personnel and the few Librarians asked to leave after the crypt was sealed, now alone, his secret service detail asked the remaining personnel to leave. Once gone and now alone with their protectee, In one final act of loyalty and profound respect, his Secret Service detail stood shoulder to shoulder and hand-saluted their beloved protectee one final time. There is 1 photo of this act, taken from behind the detail as they are looking at President Reagan's crypt. Such a man of outward dignity to all he met, even those charged with protecting him. May he rest easy.

@@DiaChris2004 the footage is from January 20, 1989, upon Reagan's departure from office after George H. W. Bush was sworn in. I think Ray S. was just saying the plane was retired in 2001. Incidentally, I think this was the same aircraft that Kennedy had in Dallas, 1963, and of course, ferried his body back to D.C., as well as where Johnson took the oath of office. The 747 we know now as "Air Force One" (though technically any plane the current president is aboard is Air Force One) first came into service under George H.W. Bush and is now serving its sixth president. It's my understanding that it is due for retirement soon in the next few years.

I just viewed lhis fairwell video for the first time. It brought back many fond memories; Both civilian & military. As a retired Navy Combat Photographer, I had the honor of documenting this President's first arrival back to CA from DC so he could escape the political zoo to get a vacation at his Santa B. Ranch. No president in my lifetime did as much to support our arned forces as President Reagan. When I enlisted under Pres. Johnson morale was sinking quickly. Every president following him seemed to weaken the military,. especialy Carter. We thought that was about as low as the morale could get. No equipment, no replacement parts, no film, no video tape, no camera parts, post production repair parts, etc. Our Combat Camera Unit all but came to a standstill. And we weren't the only ones. The entire military was self destructing from wear & tear under Carter, and no parts to rebuild anything. Then in came a cowboy from CA. Suddenly, the planes were flying again, the truccks were running, the ships were sailing. Our cameras were repaired and we were stocked with fresh film. Not that B/W reezer stored surplus junk from WWII & The Korean War we used in Vietnam. New film & Video Tape. New camera repare parts. No more canabalizing parts from one camera to keep another camera going. That was the :Carter way. Morale shot sky high. It lasted eight years. Unfotunately, soon after this video was shot, & President Reagan departed, the Defense Dept. returned to the old Carter ways only worse. Under the two Clintons, who never hid their dislike for the military, cutbacks were obvious in every department of every branch of service. Now Jet engines were being swaped out to keep the planes in operating condition so the pilots could keep up their qualifing flight hours. And, again, we were out of film & video tape, & replacement parts. So, projects were eliminated. If tape was needed for an important job, we'd have to errase previously used tapes so we had clean tapes to record on. No budget to buy new video tape. Some personnel used their own film to accomplish the projects. Numerous times my personal video camera saved many a project when the Navy's cameras broke down in the middle of a project. The Clinton era cutbacks was the reason I finally tossed in the towel and retired. Why should I ware out my expensive prrsonal video camera for the US Navy, who can't even afford to maintain their own equipment? So, after serving under 8 US Presidents, I pulled the plug on my Navy carrer. However, of all 8, I was never more proud & honored to serve as I was under my CIC, Ronald Reagan- The best years of my long Navy career. He was my Governor, my CIC & my President who could ask for anything more?!!! As a civilian, I sure miss him today!!! Isn't it odd how the (D)s constantly brought up Reagan's age concerns when he was a candidate, but never mention the subject when it's a (D ,even though it obviously shows? .

Bobby, notice the tail number 26000 which was JFK's plane to Dallas. Yes, this is our unique American send off which can be emotional for many of us. I still remember the Harlingen Boys Choir singing "This is My Country" during that Inaugural which was absolutely beautiful. It would not have been Air Force One as George HW Bush was already sworn in. I believe the designation the government gives is something like SAM-(Special Air Mission) One or some other call designation while they flew to California. I believe this is the plane in the Reagan Library Museum in Simi Valley.

I remember when they landed in California where it was like 75 degrees at the time. Reagan had shed his overcoat and scarf by then but Nancy still had on that red coat and black winter gloves. I can remember my mother commenting on it and calling her an "actress" along with a few other nasty comments because she wouldn't break up her outfit despite the hot California weather.

You can't compare President Reagan's and President Trump's personalities. Their poll ratings certainly did not compare. President Reagan was idolized and President Trump was loved by some and hated by many. However, the two of them were the only "honest" president's to reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in the last forty years.

benjianubis Bush had a better history with cilvil rights than Regan. (He wasn’t a huge Goldwater fan like like Regan) Plus, he was a very open-minded individual.

benjianubis While what you are saying is true, Regan had a very mixed cilvil rights record, he claimed to not be racist (which might just be true) but he has used some unethical language throughout his career, while Bush wasn’t perfect either, he was known to be a gentle and kind human being.
