Even as the French revolution brews and threatens the royalty at Versailles, Queen Marie Antoinette (Diane Kruger) and her lover Gabrielle de Polignac (Virginie Ledoyen) find a quiet, intimate moment to savor.

I wonder if the dress was meant to be green because when they said “envy green”, it made me think that maybe it was a symbol for Lea Seydoux’s character wanting to be in Gabrielle’s position, since she’s so enthralled by the queen.

Research shows this was how a girl friendship was in that time. It seems sexual to us but it's not to them
@hang1iderswing
@hang1iderswing 7 жыл бұрын
Or maybe all girl friendships were sexual. There were still gay and bisexual and transgender people, after all. Whereas our line for "normal" is "totally hetero", maybe their line for normal blurred the distinction. I can't speak to 1790's France, but such was the case in England during Shakespeare's time

@@remyparaskovia5499 there are actual accounts of trans people in the 18th hundreds but you have to dig deep (ex. the diaries of king stanislaus august poniatowski) trans people aren't an invention of the „regressive left”, they were always here, we've just been finding out about them now because for the last few decades being trans has stopped being inherently a death sentence

Greta M. thats the problem. Movie makers fail to portray correctly this century. The makeup was heavy, rouge cheeks and lips and highlighted eyebrows. Where are the patches everyone wore back then to hide smallpox marks ? Women did not wear wigs. They wore their real hair with artificial hairpieces to have achieve height and volume. Men did not wear white wigs. They powdered them and they looked grey, not white. Marie's hair near the revolution began to recede so she had it cut short and wore haiprieces underneath. It was called coiffure a la enfant and became a trend. You dont see any of that in this film. It is a disappointment.

Actually, Most women didn't coat their faces in thick white foundation/paint and powder anymore towards the end of the 18th century. Pale skin was of course still seen as desirable, and this look was usually created by washes and/or creams. The foundation that was applied around this time was much more accommodating to ones natural skin tone. You are very right about the rouge, lips and eyebrows though. Gabrielle de Polignac also didn't look anything like this. This actress has a somewhat olive skin tone, while Polignac was increadibly pale and had light eyes. But hey, whatever, this is historic fiction anyway. xD

We don't know if M.A. didn't fancy women as well. She might very well have been what we today refer to as gay, bi or pan - and we people nowadays wouldn't know, especially since it would've been kept secret towards the public.
