Documenting the present so the future will have a past...
Eau Claire Market opened in August of 1993 to much fanfare and it did very well for the first few years of its existence. Once heralded as the catalyst for downtown revitalization, today it is home to only a few remaining businesses.
The market is closing at the end of May 2024 and then demolition is expected to begin in July. Formerly the home of Peter Prince's Eau Claire lumber company and then Calgary's historic bus barns, this piece of land south of the Bow River is set to be redeveloped once again, this time as a train station along the C-Train's future Green Line.
Home to Calgary's first IMAX theatre and sitting across the road from the Hard Rock Cafe, it was once the place to go. What doomed it? The reasons are many but some include:
Being several block away from the nearest train station
Not having Plus 15 connectivity to the rest of the downtown buildings
Lack of a downtown population to support the market
High rent making it impractical for small unique businesses to thrive

In this video I take one last visit to the once-iconic market where today the camera-toting curiosity seekers, homeless people, and security guards greatly outnumber the businesses remaining.
