The first tune, Farewell to Talwaithe, is about a man who leaves him homeland of Talwaithe to become a whaler. I first heard it performed by Curtis and Loretta and I still hear their voices in my head every time I play it. In this set I perform Jacky Tar (also known as The Sailor's Hornpipe) as a hornpipe, but it can also be played as a slow air. Robert Burns wrote some singularly unromantic words to this tune under the name "I do confess thou art so fair." Read them if you'd looking for a good example of ways to insult someone. Far From Home (or Far Frae Hame) is a great reel of either Scottish, Irish or Shetland origin.
Arrangements by Stephanie Claussen. Purchase Jacky Tar and Far From Home in the book THE ROAD HOME FROM SKYE: www.melbay.com....

The video is from my July 13th, 2018 "Notions from Scotland" concert. This activity was made possible, in part, by funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC) through a grant from The McKnight Foundation.

Thank you! Farewell to Talwaithe was always my favorite piece to play at the end of a Renaissance Festival day, when the sun is getting low and people are moving more slowly. It encourages them to sit and enjoy the atmosphere, and rest.

Lovely! I took lessons from you maybe 6 years ago and just started practicing again and falling back in love with the harp. Thank you for some more inspiration!

You inspire me a lot. I watch your Betty Parets videos everytime I practice. I’m a newbie. I play the piano. Unfortunately no harp teachers around the area.

Thank you! I'm happy the videos are helpful (and inspirational.) Have you thought about trying Skype lessons? I know several harp teachers who give them.

LOL. Wow, just read that Robert Burn's poem and you are right: It IS (poetically) insulting. Don't know if the lady who inspired it deserved the poem, but I myself had met some exemplars that certainly would fit to those descriptions (or rather, depictions). At any rate, I find your 'threesome' musical ensemble very becoming, as if the three of the pieces were, indeed... brothers.

Feasgar math Stephanie, I have listened through the video several times now and have a question. The second tune, listed as Jacky Tar sounds very much, if not identical to the Gaelic tune, "Tighinn Air A'mhuir Am Fear A Phosas Mi". Is it the same music, with lyrics attached to the latter, or just two completely unrelated tunes? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHayYp6elqxnhaM

Hi Anthony - I can hear the similarity. I was able to find an article referencing "Tighinn Air A'mhuir Am Fear A Phosas Mi" as being a hornpipe originally (www.jstor.org/stable/40285163?seq=18#metadata_info_tab_contents) however it doesn't go into detail. The Jacky Tar hornpipe is also known as The Cuckoo's Nest or The Sailor's Hornpipe and the manuscripts that I've seen don't include any lyrics, but that doesn't mean these two works are not related!

@@StephanieClaussen that's really interesting, thanks for that. I will keep poking away at it. Either way, both were very beautiful performances.
