I think part of the reason why the Big Gabummer and the Waterfront got him while the Zeus meme didn't even though they're the same template is because the former leans into what made the original panel funny, a stark contrast between the serious topic and the silly response (goblin biker names being funny, the counters going up), while the latter ends up leaning into "bro, um actually" and reads like a subversion of an already simple joke. It's amusing but more in a "yeah, that sure is how yugioh works, thanks for correcting me man" way, which works if you haven't seen that done before, but falls flat when it's kind of what you regularly do, as a yugituber. Maybe if the edit was just "this is where my parents [were sent to the gy]" and Zeus saying "cowabummer"? Or instead, Zeus activating its effect to add material in response, because batman's parents were "destroyed"? Who knows.

So fun fact, memes are memes on themselves The actual meaning of meme is an image or sentence that has been repeated by the mases and has lost its original meaning, and because memes are seen as image jokes, they became a meme themselves
@TheTakato1227 күн бұрын
A meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads by means of imitation from person to person within a culture and often carries symbolic meaning representing a particular phenomenon or theme.
@Hc2p3n4t4rp7 күн бұрын
@@TheTakato122 1 meme, unit of cultural information spread by imitation. The term meme (from the Greek mimema, meaning “imitated”) was introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work The Selfish Gene. Dawkins conceived of memes as the cultural parallel to biological genes and considered them, in a manner similar to “selfish” genes, as being in control of their own reproduction and thus serving their own ends. Understood in those terms, memes carry information, are replicated, and are transmitted from one person to another, and they have the ability to evolve, mutating at random and undergoing natural selection, with or without impacts on human fitness (reproduction and survival). The concept of the meme, however, remains largely theoretical. It is also controversial, given the notion of selfishness and the application of the concept to the evolution of cultures, which formed the basis for the field of memetics. Within a culture, memes can take a variety of forms, such as an idea, a skill, a behaviour, a phrase, or a particular fashion. The replication and transmission of a meme occurs when one person copies a unit of cultural information comprising a meme from another person. The process of transmission is carried out primarily by means of verbal, visual, or electronic communication, ranging from books and conversation to television, e-mail, or the Internet. Those memes that are most successful in being copied and transmitted become the most prevalent within a culture.
@Hc2p3n4t4rp7 күн бұрын
@@TheTakato122 2, continuing from your wikipedia A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices, that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures.[5] In popular language, a meme may refer to an Internet meme, typically an image, that is remixed, copied, and circulated in a shared cultural experience online.[6][7] Proponents theorize that memes are a viral phenomenon that may evolve by natural selection in a manner analogous to that of biological evolution.[8] Memes do this through processes analogous to those of variation, mutation, competition, and inheritance, each of which influences a meme's reproductive success. Memes spread through the behavior that they generate in their hosts. Memes that propagate less prolifically may become extinct, while others may survive, spread, and (for better or for worse) mutate. Memes that replicate most effectively enjoy more success, and some may replicate effectively even when they prove to be detrimental to the welfare of their hosts.[9] A field of study called memetics[10] arose in the 1990s to explore the concepts and transmission of memes in terms of an evolutionary model. Criticism from a variety of fronts has challenged the notion that academic study can examine memes empirically. However, developments in neuroimaging may make empirical study possible.[11] Some commentators in the social sciences question the idea that one can meaningfully categorize culture in terms of discrete units, and are especially critical of the biological nature of the theory's underpinnings.[12] Others have argued that this use of the term is the result of a misunderstanding of the original proposal.[13] The word meme itself is a neologism coined by Richard Dawkins, originating from his 1976 book The Selfish Gene.[14] Dawkins's own position is somewhat ambiguous. He welcomed N. K. Humphrey's suggestion that "memes should be considered as living structures, not just metaphorically",[14] and proposed to regard memes as "physically residing in the brain".[15] Although Dawkins said his original intentions had been simpler, he approved Humphrey's opinion and he endorsed Susan Blackmore's 1999 project to give a scientific theory of memes, complete with predictions and empirical support.
@Hc2p3n4t4rp7 күн бұрын
@@TheTakato122 3 just adding the last part cause the first part is the same as the other 2 Shifting the meaning of memes Like many words in the English language, the word “meme” has undergone a semantic shift over time. In an internet-saturated world, “memes and their meanings are co-constructed by multiple users in a social context,” Jennifer Nycz, an associate professor and director of undergraduate studies at Georgetown University’s Department of Linguistics, said. “This is really no different from any other process of communication or knowledge creation,” she added. “It’s just especially salient in the case of memes because people explicitly construct them and then post them to the world for commentary.” The popular meme creator Saint Hoax, who has three million Instagram followers, defines a meme as a piece of media that is repurposed to deliver a cultural, social or political expression, mainly through humor. “It has the ability to capture insight in a way that is in complete alignment with the zeitgeist,” Saint Hoax said. Memes can also accelerate the popularity of certain forms of entertainment. “Memes now have the ability to help new TV shows or even songs gain popularity by becoming the basis of a viral trend,” said Samantha Sage, co-founder and chief creative officer of Betches, a media company geared toward millennial women.

@@TheTakato122 my point? I gave the TL DR meme is ment to originally be the analogue of biological mutation from a gene but for cultural transmition, that is to say, how the messages an meanings of things we say get interpreted in different ways depending on who the info is given and how that info they now give is further mutated

No meme illuminati. Just karma farmers who see a meme do well and post their own low effort version in hopes that it also does well. Thing is, Reddit is also filled to the brim with bots that upvote and repost everything everywhere just because. I'm honestly convinced that only about 50% (I'm being quite generous here) are actual humans. It doesn't help matters that Reddit's expectations for good content are so absurdly low that anything and everything qualifies as memeworthy. This isn't just limited to the Yugioh subreddits either. Reddit as a whole suffers from this.
