A reality-based crime drama set in Minnesota in 1987. Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a car salesman in Minneapolis who has gotten himself into debt and is so desperate for money that he hires two thugs (Steve Buscemi), (Peter Stormare) to kidnap his own wife. Jerry will collect the ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell), paying the thugs a small portion and keeping the rest to satisfy his debts. The scheme collapses when the thugs shoot a state trooper.

Frances McDormand was amazing in this. She says so much with her eyes, like when she’s questioning Jerry in his office and he’s sweating, you can see it she’s thinking “okay now, somethin just isn’t right with you sir.” A perfect example of how you don’t have to be just physically tough to be a good cop, it’s about the mind.

Jerry's son has a Whitesnake poster on his wall. The film is set in 1987, which was the peak of Whitesnake's popularity, but the color scheme, logo and font on this poster are consistent with that of the Slip of the Tongue era; that album did not come out until two years later, in 1989.

I kinda like it exactly for that reason. The tone of the trailer makes the story seem like a clumsy crime scene gone wrong... which it is. It comes off as a "He THOUGHT he had the perfect plan, but things just didn't turn out the way he would have hoped." kind of thing. It's almost deceptively friendly.

People from the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and even northern Iowa all tend to sound the same (though the accent gets more and more subtle the further south you go). And the accent is actually a Norwegian one, not a Canadian one, because a lot of Norwegian immigrants settled in the upper Midwest to farm on that rich, black soil.

@@soldierofgod4210 I read a poll once that placed Norwegians in the minority of the Minnesota population and I immediately doubted its accuracy. Lol. I was born and raised there, am 50% Norwegian myself (from both sides of my family) and you can't throw a rock without hitting someone who's either full-blooded or of Norwegian descent. Both my grandpas were/are full-blooded (one has passed, sadly) and I had a relative on my dad's side who was also full-blooded. There's a reason Minnesotans are known for saying "Uffda" a lot. It's because it's a Norwegian word (or interjection, to be more specific) that's part of pretty much every child's vocabulary up there! Lol. Oh, and when you hear us saying 'yah' instead of 'yeah', we are actually saying the Norwegian word for 'yes' (spelled ja -- the 'j' in Norwegian has a 'y' sound).
