Fargo (1996) - Total Silence Scene: After trying to strike up a conversation, Carl (Steve Buscemi) decides to give Gaear (Peter Stormare) the silent treatment.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmmaking siblings Joel Coen and Ethan Coen both embraced and poked satirical fun at their Minnesotan roots with this comedy-drama-thriller that earned seven Oscar nominations, winning for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief whose affable, folksy demeanor masks a whip-smart mind. When a pair of motorists are found slain not far from the corpse of a state trooper, Marge begins piecing together a case involving a pair of dopey would-be kidnappers, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Bergman stock player Peter Stormare). They've been hired by Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman under the thumb of his wealthy, overbearing boss and father-in-law, Wade (Harve Presnell). Jerry's raised some money illegally through a petty scam he's run on General Motors and he's about to get caught. When Wade sours a business deal that could save his son-in-law's hide, the desperate Jerry hires Carl and Gaear to kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. Things go predictably wrong and a series of murders occur, with Marge, waddling along behind her enormous belly and ever-hungering for an all-you-can-eat buffet, hot on the trail of the killers. Although the credits for Fargo state that the film is loosely based on real events, the story is entirely fictional, the claim being just an ironic jibe on the part of the Coens.

Say what you want about Steve Buscemi's looks - the man is a hero. He was a firefighter in NYC before becoming an actor and stayed in the FDNY reserves. After 9/11, he went back to his old fire station and worked 12 hour shifts at the World Trade Center doing recovery work. He was later made an honorary battalion chief. The guy is a hero to me. I don't care if he is "funny lookin".

It would be intriguing to know Carl and Gaear's backstory. They obviously didn't know each other before this scheme, and Shep only knew Gaear. It's probably the case that Carl and Gaear have extensive criminal records (petty stuff, nothing serious like murder) and have spent most of their adult life in and out of prison. They probably had a mutual acquaintance who put them in touch with each other.
@bobsnow6242
@bobsnow6242 Жыл бұрын
I feel like Carl is a transient criminal who isn't native to the region. He's very pushy and abrasive and has no sense of boundaries or politeness which is very uncharacteristic in Minnesota, although since he's a scumbag criminal those traits might not apply. The biggest giveaway though is that Buscemi uses his real life New York accent which would indicate he probably came from NYC and drifted out to the Midwest, maybe to escape scrutiny from the authorities back home who were likely very familiar with him. Then again he also had a Minnesota driver's license in the scene with the cop so he was at least a somewhat-established resident of the state. Maybe he just sounds like that because Buscemi can't do a Midwestern accent, lol. Gaear Grimsrud is probably a local from one of those super-isolated Scandinavian immigrant communities that still exist in Minnesota, given his name and the fact that during the few times he does speak he has a noticeable Swedish/Norwegian inflection. This is all headcanon for me of course but seems like plausible backstories for me. No idea how Carl might have crossed paths with either Gaear or Shep, though. He doesn't seem like the sort of person either would make friends with. Oddly enough he's more like Jerry - an idiotic weasel who greatly overestimates his ability to bullshit people and talk his way out of situations but ultimately just makes them worse.
@deedunn1989
@deedunn1989 Жыл бұрын
I also thought about that. Carl probably talked Gaer in on it how they can work good together because he’s more of a talker and can get out of more situations and Gaer can handle what he’s good at: The labor

I love the sound of silence because I live in section eight apartments ....where there is no such thing 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The police enjoy job security because of where I live. I live with one of the rarest liver diseases in the world and often get become very fatigued because of it.....but I only get to sleep when the neighbors decide to sleep.... soon it’s all going to be over after ten years of hell..... I have qualified for a medical unit apartment in an all senior community for people with disabilities where it’s Quiet all day and all night long 7 days a week 24 hours a day...the apartment is going to be quite smaller than the one I live in now .....but I don’t give a rats rip about that. I get to move in February ..... I often get so excited about leaving here that I find myself smiling over nothing these days....life is about to become very quiet for me.....oh I crave quiet . TEN YEARS IN SECTION 8 HOUSING ALL OVER FOR ME THIS FEBUARY. I WILL GET THE SWEETEST LITTLE APARTMENT IN QUIETSVILLE......I HOPE I DONT DIE BEFORE I GET THERE AND EVEN MY LITTLE YORKIE POO DOG GETS TO COME WITH ME !

Why are they arriving in Minneapolis from the south? I thought Brainerd was north of the twin cities.

They drove Brainerd to Mpls via Rochester. That's why it took them 4 hours.

It is astounding that Buscemi wasn't nominated for an oscar for Fargo.

I thought he was rude to demand from others based on his expectations like everyone is different and nothing wrong with silence but this would determine how their relationship would end in the film

Haha I dont know if anyone gets it but basically what is happening is the driver is not happy that the passenger isnt talking so he says two can play at that game see how you like it but in actual fact he cant help himself but talk so hes not actually being silent I dont know who wrote this movie but whoever did is a genius can someone tell me the name of the film

I always wondered how Buscemi's character became a criminal in the first place. He seems intelligent and reasonable with a good sense of humor. Then I realized he wears the mask a little better than Stormare, but he possesses the same savagery. They are the same ugly monster underneath.

God I hate it when people smoke in the car, my parents did it and I found it unbearable. Like Gaear (Peter Stormare) I'm not a very talkative or sociable colleague, I'm just there to work not talk.
