Years ago 1986 I pulled a cotton stalk up after harvest it had about at 3/4 to 1 inch below ground level a 360 curly Q so it had turned down under the crust before it got enough rain to get through the crust...I just wonder over the years how many times the seedlings died before emergence...when I was little JD and IHC offered as a planter option/attachment what was called a hill dropper for cotton. It collected several seed and would drop them altogether in a group usally spaced about 8 to 12 inches apart... my dad never used them on his that I remember but my granddad did those few seed together would give that extra push in each hill to break the crust...Dad planted in a drill and used a rotary hoe if needed to Crack the crust ...

We have a lot of crusting going on this year and we finally got some rain so hoping that will fix it and there able to push thro
