Pete, I wish you could see the grin on my face while watching this video. I grew up on a dairy farm, but it “wasn’t my thing” in my teens and twenties. I married a city boy who has never experienced country life and had no desire for it. As I aged and my eyes were opened more and more to this deteriorating country, I began to long for that rural, simple life again. Finally, my husband’s eyes were opened 31/2 years ago (😉) and we started homesteading on our minuscule 2 acres. We aren’t in a position to purchase more land yet, but we are at least on the same page now, and hope to purchase at least 20 acres in the future. We are in our late forties now, so hopefully we will make that jump soon. Pete, you’re channel is so incredible. You and your family bring me so much joy, real joy. May God continue to bless you. Congrats on your new addition. 🚜

Pete: I'm the guy who worked for IH and sold the 990 mower conditioner that we demonstrated with an 856D, a company owned tractor turned up to around 140hp. The custom came out during my time with the company. Absolutely thrilled that you found one in fantastic original condition-they're rare. Looking forward to your restoration. Years ago I traveled the state roads between Albany/Syracuse and points west. Went to the baseball HOF in Cooperstown. I was amazed at the beauty of upstate NY. When people in the midwest think of NY, they think of New York City. They don't realize what they are missing.

@@mikewigim2864 my feelings exactly. I was born in Rochester and raised in Henrietta. The countryside in Pete’s video here are exactly the same as the countryside around Henrietta when I was growing up in the mid 40’s thru 1960’s. Red barns, farm houses and open farm land. It has all changed now,but what good memories. I’m very quick to tell people that upstate NY is very different than NYC.

That's a pretty nice old survivor... Good plan to grab it. One can't help feeling a bit sad when looking at these old farms that are dwindling away. I grew up in rural Maine in the 50s and 60s, and all the farms that were in production are long gone. Many of them bulldozed and now sport parking lots for malls that are themselves now becoming obsolete. (The farms had a longer run than the malls it seems!) Thanks for taking us along!

Pete, you did a great job of road testing the 856 looking for issues! It's the battle of need vs. want that every old farm equipment lover faces when something pops up on marketplace. Last year I brought home a beautifully preserved 1956 Ontario grain drill bought from the original owner near Warsaw NY. Wooden box, original pinstripes and lettering, always cleaned out and oiled after use. Did I need it? No, I already have a John Deere FBA drill. But it was love at first sight. Now I have two drills (in case the neighbor needs to borrow the John Deere!) If possible, do what brings you joy (life is too short), make good buying decisions, AND try to keep your wife happy! I think you did all three on this deal, but we haven't heard from Hillary yet!

Congratulations on purchasing the 856 I knew if you were serious enough to make the drive there and check it out if money wasn't an object you should bring it home as soon as you showed the first picture with the owner sitting on it. I got the chance to put slot of hours on my uncle's 856 when it was first new great tractor. I never remember seeing the custom 856 version did know IH made a stripped down version but this tractor doesn't remind me of what I believed should look like hydraulic, two, headlight fenders, weights, guess that could of been added. later was thinking the stripped down version may not of even had fenders so that could be why it got double light fenders after leaving factory all being said I would sure be proud to say I owned it good job Pete!!!

I’m 40 now and I started driving a 300 Farmall when I was 7. Then a M Farmall, 1466 turbo, 1486 and 7130. Last large tractor farming was a JD 8400. Cut hay and baked with a 2294. Raked with a Ford 8N. Loaded hay with a 560 rice special. Rolled the 560 but was spared by the home made canopy but landed on old plexiglass from when it was used to feed hay in the rain. Found myself staring up at the rear tire rotating above my head. It bent the floor of the tractor in the rear. No 3 point on the 560. Had a PTO.

From 1 856D owner to another, you will like that tractor. My 856 has 9,960 hours on it. The engine has never been apart and runs strong. When I was farming (now retired) it was a solid, economical tractor to run. The hydraulic assist on the clutch is a nice upgrade. IH offered that as an upgrade sometime in the 80's as I recall. The Custom also didn't have the spin-on fuel filters, so someone upgraded that. I kept mine when I quit farming to use with a rotary mower, 3 point blade and a dirt scraper. I probably put around 100 hours a year on it now and enjoy every one of them. Well, except blading snow when it is cold and the wind is blowing isn't as much fun. Looking forward to seeing the new tractor on the farm. I was kind of hoping that you would drive it home. I drove mine home about 40 miles when I bought it. Pulling a sugar beet harvester that I bought at the same time.

I grew up with an 856 with a Year-a-round cab on it with the suicide doors. Great tractor, ours blew up but we still used it for years after. Dad said a barrel of oil was cheap enough. We eventually bought a couple 1486s and the old 856 got put in the grove. Its living the good life now though, a guy my dad was talking to was asking him if he had any classic cars in the grove, he was looking for a restoration project and instead of a car he sold the guy the 856. The guy was from Des Moines IA about 4 hours from our house. He sent us a few pictures about 8 months after he bought it, he did a beautiful restoration on it, looked better than it did off the show room floor.

Golly Pete, when that 856 fired up, I was thinking you need to buy that beast haha. I have a neighbor in my little fire department who is almost 70. Both his parents are alive (95 and 93). His father cut the first ever power line right of way up the Blue Ridge escarpment into our isolated Appalachian mountain county. A decade later power finally was run up to our even more isolated tiny community deep in the mountains in the late 1950s. Mentioning Mr. Millard's age reminded me of this.

Congratulations Pete! Millard was as great a find as the tractor.

I love that tractor, Pete. As someone who collects older cars or tractors, your new 856 is exactly what you hope to find. It is pretty much original, not beat up, not worked or driven to death, had decent maintenance throughout its life, and not had a bunch of owners. I was excited as soon as you walked up to it. The best part for the seller is it couldn't be going to a better home.

Way to go Pete, that is a beautiful tractor. And your right it won't take a major undertaking to have her good as new. Took me 40 years to get my hands on a Ford workmaster 681 like my grandparents had and I love it. Unfortunately, It's in disrepair parked in the barnyard. One day Pete, one day. Love the videos.. keep them coming.

Looks like a really nice, honest tractor! Congrats on the great find Pete! ...and BTW, I think you did a really good job containing your excitement on this new acquisition. Those of us that have gotten to know you a bit through your videos could see hints of the "kid in a candy store", wanting to bust out. Maybe an "Oh Yeah!" Mixed with a few fist pumps. lol

We have an 856 with original paint. It's a pleasure to run and the D407 is one of the best sounding IH engines, IMO. Congrats Pete

Well now you have to build a new garage. There is now way that thing fits into your current shop. 😅

I would like to do that, and get into more restoration work as I get older.

I learned how to drive on one of those when I was quite a bit under 16, but we never had a cab or shade on ours. I had to stand up to drive it because I couldn't push the clutch or brake in if I was sitting down. A good hard-working tractor for good hard-working people. It did everything from planting and discing and plowing to mowing hay and pulling the hay wagon. When the ice got too thick on the pond to chop, we'd put a drill on the back of the tractor and use that to get water for our cattle.
