1949 Farmall Cub Blue Smoke; the valves.
I determined that the valves were at least part of the reason (perhaps the primary reason) for the blue smoke and loss of compression. This video covers the valve guide removal and installation, cutting the valve seats, lapping the valves, installing new valves, installing valve springs, installing valve spring retainers and and keepers, polishing the stems, and adjusting the valves.
Part 3 will be; de-glazing the cylinders/honing the cylinders, piston and ring installation, insert bearing installation, and more.

LOVED this video. So, so good. The detail was so helpful and you did such a great job. I have to do this on my granddad’s 1948. I’m feeling more confident about it now. Thank you!

Another great 'how to' video showing a complete step-by-step process of installation of valves, guides, springs, keepers, lapping, etc. You continue to be a master teacher and make the entire process easy to understand. This video could be used to train students in the fine art of proper valve replacement. Blessings to you....

Great video! I've never used one of those bits before just the old stone kind. Looks good. I'm really wanting a Cub now more then ever! I've been meaning to ask you what kind of camera and video editor do you use. Great picture quality!

Thank you! I am still just using my iPhone 13 Pro Max for my videos. I do plan to purchase a dedicated camera in the near future but haven’t decided which one to buy. I edit with iMovie. I’ve tried more sophisticated software but keep coming back to iMovie. My videos are simple, that’s all I really need.

I bought the same seat cutter, but couldn't get the valve guides to move so i left the old in. cut the seats. My seats were in worse shape but it brought them back. the deeper I cut on the bad ones, the more of the valve stem I had to grind back when adjusting the valves. I wish I would of tried lapping longer, I had the area it was touching a skinny line near the top like a couple of yours, But I didn't know just laping would fix or wide the line down further. there were these other sites that acted like I had to change something on the blades a do three different cuts. So you proved you can do it with one setting .I don't remember as I did this 2 years ago now, or 3. Did I buy 2 diff cutters or did I use the same one for the exhaust & intake ? The intake is the larger one right? I just "remember", thinking I'm spending over 150 dollars and this cutters is only good for the cub farmall .Won't do small engines. I'll have to tear in to mine again sometime . To get more compression, Still starting is a problem. I see in the utube engine rebuild videos where the have the special equipment, they simply drill out the seats \till there thin enough to move. My tractor sat in someone's tabacco shed from 1980 so about 40 years out of action. the humidity alone ( if only he would of sealed the exhaust ) rusted the valves ,bad enough/ I had to break one out. and push it down and break it again and the the rest of the way if I remember correctly

Regarding the cutter … I cut all the exhaust valves (yes, they are the smaller ones) with one setting then I DID slide the blades out and increase the cutting diameter for intakes. But, yes, I was able to cut them both with the same tool. It was expensive but still cheaper then having somebody else do it, and much less hassle for me. Plus, I like doing things myself so I can learn and add to my experience. Cub valves require only one cut, so that simplified the process quite a bit vs. a three angle cut for example. Yes, lapping worked well. Because I just cut the seats I think they were all very close to start with. It just required some additional lapping to make good contact. Thanks for watching!!!!

you need a generous amount of grease for valve collets, I have only installed collects on small engines though

Great info! Could you add some links to where you bought your valve tools? With the exception of the guide removal press of course. Or did you purchase them a long time ago?

The valve guide puller and driver are 5/16” diameter, just a hair less actually.
