Great video, thanks for sharing. I also have a Cub that I put away several years ago when the starter failed (was distracted by other things and got a cheap lawn tractor to keep my land under control). I'm about to get the Farmall running again and decided I'd just rely on crank starting, but this video inspired me to investigate the starter motor. Thanks again!

Good job, on diagnosing the original problem, and then the reassembling problem. I had a '44 Farmall B and when I got it, the previous owner put on a new starter. When I got it home, the starter switch wasn't engaging the starter. I put a new one on, and even had to put in a different starter rod since all the new starters had the switch reversed. This worked fine for several months until one day, it wouldn't engage. This time I investigated further and noticed the teeth on the flywheel were worn. That was probably the problem the previous owner had, but he thought it was the starter drive. I picked up an used flywheel from a Farmall 200 and also replaced the starter drive in the starter, and that fixed the problem permanently. I have since traded that B for a Ford 8N, which I am in the process of repainting.

Are you painting the 8N original colors or doing something different with it?

Great video and such a pretty little cub! I have a 48 cub (Shelly) with starter issues so I’m trolling around KZbin looking for possible solutions before I take her apart. I replaced her Bendix a few years ago because the teeth were worn down. Worked great for a while. Then one day the starter would spin, but doesn’t sound like it’s engaging the flywheel enough to make it spin. I can hear it thumping. Maybe the flywheel gears worn down. Will start with the electrical side of things first since that’s super easy. Love the zip tie and bolt trick!!! ❤️❤️. Will add you to my subscriber list. Love your vintage cars and tractors!!

Thank you Lisa (and Shelly)! Yes, those starters can be frustrating. I'm actually having trouble with mine yet again. All of my electrical is good (good grounds, good wires, good switch, etc). The Bendix is good. The flywheel teeth are good. Maybe something wrong with the brushes now? Not sure. In the meantime, it starts easily enough with the hand crank. Thanks for subscribing!

@@AntiqueCarsandStuff Mine starts easily enough w the crank, too, but that’s very inconvenient! Just put the starter on the bench and fired it up and see the bendix spins as figured so is not moving forward. Happily the teeth on the flywheel look fine so just came in to research why it won’t move forward. Jammed? Have worked on stuff just enough to know better to look at videos from friendly folks like yourself before I really mess something up badly! 😊

I have overhauled many IHC starters , I could show you how to load the brushes without the zip ties. Some times the post will become worn and needs replaced. By looking at the pole shoes the arm was dragging, need to replace bushings on both ends. Good job.

After removing an armature and brushes from starter motors and generators always do an earth and continuity test immediately after pushing the armature back into the yoke and before attempting to assemble the rest of the starter motor. Also to remember that there are 2 circuits in most starter motors, a pull in circuit and a run circuit.

Just found your channel and love it. I am working on an IH Cub Lo-Boy which has a similar starting issue. I am going to follow your process and try and clean the starter switch to see if that is the issue. Will progress from there. Thanks for putting this video together.

Nice to hear the old cub run. Did you get a mower for it yet?

Not yet. Cub implements are hard to come by around here.
