You are exactly right about plowing depth FF. I saw a great farm ruined by people plowing it too deep. The top soil was great and would grow shoulder high tobacco until the farm was sold. The new occupants would plow it as deep as possible and they eventually rolled all the clay up on top and the good gray topsoil under. It never grew tobacco as good again.

Great video with great information for those who don't know. You are right about plowing I set up many plows over the years. I used to work for farms and dealers and plowing to see how they plowed. From one bottom to eight tagging them together making the best job plowing we could do. Ñew is nice but old showed class and great engineering for the time and build with pride too. 👍😅

The M handles the 3 bottom very well. My grandpa bought a 3 bottom Little Genius new in 1951 and we still have it. He pulled it with the W-4. You could try the H; it would do it, but the M does it so well and with ease. We're in different soil now and the bottoms on the Little Genius won't work in this harder clay, and it's too much to ask of the W-4 to pull it. If we had the right bottoms with throwaway shares a W-6 or M would do it though.

Man I love the way you explain this! You’re right on! The seedbed is paramount for the old fashioned way of cropping! There’s just one thing…….. you’re desperately in need of crimson clover out there………… and I’m in the process of putting some pressure on you to that end! BOOM 💥
@FarmallFanatic
@FarmallFanatic Жыл бұрын
You very rarely see crimson clover up here. It's usually Ladino or the white Dutch clover and that is left alone for a couple of years, and then you turn it under and grow corn behind it.

@@FarmallFanatic Well, we plunged from the mid 40°s to negative 3° and it didn’t hurt it……. So I’m gonna say you should at least try on good size patch…….. one 50# bag it doesn’t tie your field up for two years and produces MUCH more nitrogen! My results this year are stunning.

Piece of advice, don’t tie pull rope to your seat. If the hitch ever trips it could get nasty. Fashion a hook on the rope of #9 wire, and hook it on the fender. If plow ever trips it will straighten the hook and pull free verses pulling you off the seat. Breaking your trip lever, or the rope breaking and slingshotting back to you.

Never plowed with a three bottom. We had a 2x14 Oliver trailer on rubber with blade shares and shins so it was more or less a modern plow. We didn't have to blacksmith when the points wore and I would change the shin to save the moldboard. We would plow 6 inch deep to keep the tail wheel in the last furrow. We had clay tile that Dad laid in the bottom of the furrow that he hand dug with a tile shovel. We were in the topsoil and we didn't want to bring up the clay tile or rocks. Who are you trying to convince on the way you plow? I would have been tickled to set up a foreign plow that quick where you turned it over. Grass down, Dirt up. If I had dirt like you have I would plow then disc pulling a single culta packer and then plant with a drill this late in the year. The more you drive on the ground the more you pack the soil. I need to assume you make a living wage on your land. Maybe you drive a school bus and farm in between bus routes. We have guys that take the bus home to farm between pickup and drop off.

I am going to go against the consensus, at least partially. Moldboard plowing was invented to do the very thing you discuss. But when tractors were introduced over draft animals, their weight started taking its toll by introducing a "hard pan" in the soil. The hard pan needs to be removed by deep plowing regularly. My ag degree is dated, but I still believe in the old theory of 7000 + pound tractors packing the soil and the shallow moldboard plow does not address that potential problem. JMHO

We always plowed! When everyone went to no till we stayed with the plow! Take that 3 bottom and get sand blasted then paint her up! It’s well worth fixing up! First plow I owned was a 2 bottom little genius! Bought it off a neighbor who sold his dairy herd and parked everything! Got the H to go with it all for $500.00 used em both for 10 years! And that was the beginning of buying red power and rebuilding it for sale and use ! Your SMTA will pull 4-14’s no sweat! I pulled 4-14’s with my SM for years

Also you have to turn it over enough to cover your weed seed enough to control the weeds don't come back through.
