So nice, well done guys! Not only in your work, but also in your inspiration to get me moving to repair my own equipment that's been sitting too many years due to my health issues. After watching you save 5J1113 this past winter I dug out my JD420C crawler/loader and replaced the 10 rollers and front idlers then got it running again. What a job but what a sense of accomplishment in completing the task. Once again, thank you two gentlemen for your videos and work ethics. On to my 1952 Ford 8N and my Farmall Super C,

The old M is looking new again, nice. Lots of work but in the end it will sure look cool. To keep your eyelids from twitching, try a piece of pipe in the lathe and sharpen it at whatever angle looks good to you, then weld a backer on to it. You can cut circles pretty easy like this. I sold my press years ago so I use a hammer, the press would be better. Very nice job, Keep smiling.

Inside the battery box I put a rubber pad made from a nylon reinforced mud flap. it gave me the extra space so the battery would not rub on the bolts. I used a hole cutter on my drill to cut out small holes in the rubber above the bolts. The rubber pad looks like swiss-cheese with the holes in it. It works great. I know many of us have a hard time with chipping paint off of bolts when tightening down. I use a piece of thick vapor barrier plastic over the bolt or nut before sliding the socket on. it works pretty good. there is just enough slop in a socket for the plastic. It protects the paint an saves allot of chip repair.

Hello gents, this is probably too late for you to be interested,but just by accident, a comment on an aviation channel led me to find something called Randolph Aviation Products battery paint. An asphalt based product apparently. If the long term condition of the battery box is of concern to you,then something the FAA approves would seem to me about the best available. Don't know anything about it good or bad,but several aviation supply companies stock the stuff,maybe ordering a tin would be a worthwhile effort. Seeing the massive corrosion on the floorplate of the tractor suggests that belt and suspenders is a good way to avoid having your trousers fall down. Much enjoying the series. All the best.

@@squatch253: I see both camps in the replies to your D2 project re painting #5J1113. I am still firmly on the fence, as I think it will look grand if painted or left in its natural weathered condition for a decades old working machine :)
@ralfie88014 жыл бұрын
Are you going with a 12V battery and charging system? If so, you might consider a vented battery from a crossover type SUV. They’re vented outside the battery compartment inside the vehicle through a hose that runs through the floor. Using that type of battery and vent system would make sure there are no hydrogen sulfide gasses vented inside your new battery box. The battery from a 2010 ish GM Traverse, Enclave, Acadia, Outlook vehicle should have more than enough starting capacity for your tractor, plus you’ll have that vent hose to run down below the tractor to save your new tin and the paint job. It’s just an idea to help save your hard work on this machine. Tractor looks great!

Might it be a thought to use a gel lead battery, as they don't out-gas to the same extent or give off acid vapour. They are available in both 6 and 12 volt.
@wackowacko89314 жыл бұрын
You can use left hand tin snips to cut round rubber washers out of square ones. If they aren't cutting as well as you like, throw them in the freezer for a while. You can fit a plastic tray inside the battery box, then use a smaller group size battery to keep corrosion from happening. If it was a car, I'd suggest a dry cell battery, but those lose a charge after sitting for a short while. Better to use a group 24 or 54 wet cell, it will start pretty well for 7-8 years even after sitting for months.

You know there is no way the factory would have put that much detail into that tractor like you guys have. When it's finished and you go to shows ,if it doesn't win first place, And there's something wrong with the judges.
@stevestrohacker84364 жыл бұрын
Thats one of the reasons to own tractors. NO popularity contests. Trophy would take away from the show in my opinion.
@1982MCI4 жыл бұрын
Steve Strohacker tractors are built to work and when they wear out it’s cheaper to rebuild them than it is to buy a new one then you put it back to work. If you bought a new one, it would be the same putting it to work for the first time, no different but it’s just a mental thing for folks. I do understand tho that some folks just love tractors and like to collect, restore, and show them and it’s their money so I let em do what they want cause it doesn’t hurt me at all. And to the other comment about when it’s done and go to shows and there is something wrong with the judges if it doesn’t win a trophy I disagree. There are some guys that go to unimaginable lengths and spend bag after bag of money to make these things look so much better than new so it may just show what kind of competition you have out there!! To me, it would be hard to beat this one as nice as it looks now, but not impossible. If someone does beat him then that man has deserved a hand shake, a well done, and a trophy!!! Well guys, take care and be safe out there!!
@stevestrohacker84364 жыл бұрын
@@1982MCI trust me sir I understand. Bringing trophies to an engine show will result in the uppity car collectors. It's all about "I'm better than you are." I've got 35 years in collecting, board member, officer, feature chairperson for multiple brands. I AM COLOR BLIND to brands. However I've also been assaulted by a certain alfalfa green tractor owners with dandelion yellow on them. Trust me that the people are the good and bad aspects of ANY collecting. A trophy is nice if applied to pulls or car shows. BUT to award trophies to the guy that spends the most money on his tractor doesn't make it the "Best in show." Buddy has an ORIGINAL and unrestored 1918 12-25 Case tractor. This has not had either head taken off it for a valve job. It IS arguably the Standard by which ALL other tractors can be compared to. Stencils are ALL visible yet and the patina is beyond reproach. It IS exquisite! Restored tractors ARE a necessary evil in my opinion. To each their own though. Thanks for your thoughts my friend.

On putting on the front tires. I have 2 bolts with the heads cut off that I screw in by hand. Then I put the tire on screw in the lug studs. The take the bolts out and put the lug studs in those holes and tighten them all up. Doing this helps line everything up. Waiting to see it run in the feild all done.
