Farmer protests: Armoured police vehicles block highway as tractors push to reach Paris

The French government on Wednesday sent armoured vehicles to protect a wholesale food market in Paris and blocked the highway into the city, in a sign of escalating tensions as farmer protests in France and Belgium as the movement heats up elsewhere in Europe.
Meanwhile, Belgian farmers said that hundreds of tractors would descend on Brussels on Thursday as EU leaders meet in the city for a summit.
Farmers are angry over EU regulations they say are killing off their businesses by making them uncompetitive.

Alot of beef farmers could not because of quota. A single mother once said when milk is more expensive than soft drive at fast food place she will buy drinks. Prices are getting totally out of hand & these big farmers with high priced equipment are saying they can't keep up, wellwith1,000,000 tractor yes things are getting tight My pkup cost 34,000 I could have bought a fancy fancy truck for 80,000 jiust half ton. I sure there are people out there farming with horses doing same thing not as big for a lot less Thanks sorry

European farmers are being farmed themselves by big corporations. They are forced to use ever increasing industrial methods to grow food, to use ever more expensive equipment, and to rob the soil of natural life with artificial fertilisers. They need vast amounts of water to create something which would not naturally exist. I´m not sure they even touch the soil ... or notice the lack of earthworms. With very little effort from me, my land in Granada, about the size of half a football pitch, produces more than twenty kinds of organic fruit and nuts, -- 80% given to neighbours and friends, and I can barter avocados for firewood and olive oil. This year is excellent for olives, oranges, lemons and especially avocados, next year will be different. So if I, a pensioner with a helper on Monday mornings can produce this amount of food, surely if that was multiplied with governmental encouragement (like in Cuba ) then farmers could get back on the land, rather than being perched two metres above it. Surely if you don't need to spend a fortune on a tractor that could obliterate the walls of Jericho you could cut yourself a bit of slack ? SMALL IS THE NEW BIG.
