Farmer Reacts to Twister | Movie Reaction | First Time Watching

Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt and Carey Elwes may be billed as the stars of Twister, but the film's real attractions are the cyclones themselves. Best experienced in a theater, the nail-biting, blow-the-audience-out-of-their-seats computer generated graphics, cutting edge sound and other special effects are designed to take viewers straight into the roaring funnel of a gigantic tornado. In order to focus on special effects and action, the story is simple and the characters are drawn in broad strokes with little depth. Jo Harding (Hunt) became a storm chaser (a meteorologist who photographs and scientifically studies tornadoes in the field) after a large twister sucked her hapless daddy into oblivion when she was a girl. Bill (Paxton) was a storm chaser too, but left to become a successful weatherman. His change of profession ruined his marriage to Jo. Before separating, the Hardings invented DOROTHY, a gizmo designed to release thousands of tiny sensors when a tornado passes over it. The Hardings hope the information transmitted by the sensors will provide insight into the nature of the whirling windstorms. Backed by a large corporation, the villainous Dr. Jonas Miller (Elwes) has created a similar machine. Neither gadget has been field tested and both groups of storm chasers are anxious to find tornadoes. At the peak of the worst twister season in decades, Bill shows up at Jo's truck with his prissy fiancee Melissa (Jami Gertz) so Jo can sign divorce papers. Suddenly a twister is spotted. With little hesitation, Bill rejoins the mad rush to reach it in time to activate DOROTHY. Jonas and his team are right behind them. Throughout the day the storms become worse and the rivalrous race becomes more intense. As they continue facing incredible dangers together Jo and Bill find renewed love while poor Melissa finds only an intense desire to get away from these storm-obsessed lunatics.

I live in Oklahoma where this was filmed and my father was a storm chaser for the Civil Defense in the '70's and 80's so it brings back a lot of memories . Fun fact, the TV meteorologists in the backgrounds are the actual ones for the local OKC stations.

I live in Dallas/Ft. Worth and Rick Mitchell (the one on the TV at the motel) is the chief meteorologist for our local NBC station now. He's EXCELLENT when it comes to covering dangerous weather events.

The film was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to Independence Day. It was a box office success, making $600 million dollars against a $90 million dollar budget. It recieved mixed reviews by Critics, but became a cult classic later on.

My two favorite things about this movie: 1 - The secondary characters: Aunt Meg, and the ragtag group of friends. They all seem like real people, that you'd like to hang out with. 2 - The scenery! Beaches and Mountains usually get all the attention, but, the Midwest plains have their own kind of beauty, and this movie shows it off perfectly.

You're one of my favorite reactors due to how genuine and honest you are. Being a movie lover myself, I can share that the 6 trucks were most likely used for different stages of damage for the movie. One is brand spanking new no scratches, 2nd one probably had the shell removed,, 3rd would have cracked windshield and some dents, etc. In some cases, they actually cut the car in half or just the front part and place it on a large dolly or trailer so they can hook up camera rigs for close ups and things and then pull it with another vehicle that the director is in as he films the scene.

I was a film student (Emerson College in Boston) but living in Ames, Iowa when this film was in production and got a chance to work on this film for a couple of weeks as they wanted production assistants with both film AND tornado experience-which I had after several summers working as a corn detassler for a seed company. We’d had plenty of very close run-ins with big tornadoes so I was an experienced storm flee-er rather than chaser at that point. Fun film, good memories!

This is my sister's FAVORITE movie and ONE OF my favorites. We're both amateur weather nuts, but she takes it to the next level. She's actually a storm chaser photographer with National Weather Service certification via SkyWarn and Spotter Network, and she reads meteorology textbooks _for fun._ Honestly the only thing keeping her from going back to school to major in it is the advanced math required for forecasting (she's severely dyslexic with numbers). If you can't tell, I'm really fucking proud of her. lol I'm hoping to tag along with her on a couple chases during the next storm season so I can drive and let her safely take pictures out the window. We're such nerds that we both have advanced radar apps on our phones and we send each other screen caps of super cell storms happening in _other states_ just to say, "WOW LOOK AT _THIS_ SHIT!!" Fun fact: the meteorologist you hear speaking on the TV Melissa is watching in the motel room is Rick Mitchell. He's the chief meteorologist for our local NBC station here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and he's EXCELLENT in covering dangerous weather. We trust him implicitly.

The scene where Jo and Bill are driving up the hill at 20:37 I believe was filmed outside of Boone and is used sometimes during RAGBRAI, it's called "Tornado hill" . I do know that the house that gets destroyed at the end of the movie was filmed about 20 miles away from Parkersburg.

I grew up in northern Colorado and in 1965 we spent three whole days under tornado warnings, the afternoon of the third day at the age of 7 I went upstairs and to the sliding glass door at the back of the house, I spotted three tornadoes on the ground less than a mile from the house, my feet did not touch a single step on my way back to the basement. our basement was only partially finished so we gathered under the staircase as it was the strongest structure there. Several homes near my grade school suffered damage including two homes that lost their roofs.

I was born in Iowa, and while my family moved away when I was about 5, we had a tornado hit near us once and I still remember the green skies right before. It was freaky. The story about the farmers being mad about the trucks was funny though XD

That scene with Bill and Phillip outside the diner looking at the sky even chokes me up, now they are both gone. I love the feel, the adventure, funny caracters, all of it. I was part of the May, 1985 Tornado outbreak. I lived in NE Ohio and was only 7 at the time. Fortunately my mother was at work and I was a short distance away at my grandparents. My town was nearly wiped off the map. This movie hits different for me. Love your content! Keep it up!

Not as important as your truck story, but relatable: when they filmed some of the stafium scenes of Babe in my hometown of Danville, Illinois, a local tobacco shop sold out of a particular brand of cigars. Apparently, that was the same brand of cigars some of the extras can be seen smoking. Apparently, they actually casted people who were smokers and gave them real cigars.

Bill Paxton was also in The Terminator--one of the three punks from whom he demanded clothes at the beginning. Helen Hunt is also good in As Good As It Gets (1997) with Jack Nicholson, Cast Away (2000) with Tom Hanks, and What Women Want (2000) with Mel Gibson. I loved her on NBC's Mad About You co-starring Paul Reiser from Aliens. Jami Gertz's first big break was Lost Boys (1987). Our drive-in has 5 screens. 😁

Love this movie! I'll never forget seeing the teaser trailer to this movie: "From the Producers of JURASSIC PARK, and the Director of Speed. TWISTER. The Dark Side Of Nature. Summer 1996." They did show clips of the opening in the first trailer and the drive thru getting destroyed in the second.

I lived in Florida since 1972. I have been in least 10 hurricanes in that time. Back in 2004, two storms strike near my house with "eye" of those storms came across over my house. "Eye" of each storm reveals calm and eerie feeling, knowing other side of the storm will come in soon causing more havoc. Unlike with tornados, hurricanes are extremely low-pressure systems. Lower the barometric pressure, danger that hurricanes can become with extremely high winds and storm surges. Like with Tornados (Fujita Scale), hurricane's strength is classified in Category Scale from 1 to 5. Majority of hurricanes are Cat 1. But there were major ones struck Florida and Gulf Coast of US (New Orleans) such as Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Andrew. Ones that hit my area were Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne. Lost power total of 10 days. So, this year, 2022, it has been quiet in the Atlantic with two going away from US. But season ends in November.

The original choice was Tom Hanks, but he apparently didn’t feel quite right for the role. Instead, his ´Apollo 13´castmate Paxton ended up with the part. It´s so nice that they have named their technical Invention "Dorothy". A tribute to "The Wizzard of Oz" (1939). I guess you havent seen both movies,? So fun fact, they've got the timeline wrong for the F5 at the beginning. I live in lubbock and one of the big deals for Texas Tech is that they were instrumental in the creation of the Fujita scale that was based on the tornado that hit here in May of 1970. Also, if you look closely, you can see a texas highway sign

Fun trivia: This movie is linked to The Terminator, Terminator 2 and The Abyss. All three are movies written and directed by James Cameron. How? At 28:40, there's the oil tanker coming towards our heroes. It bears the logo of Benthic Petroleum, the fictional oil company featured in the previously mentioned movies.

We still have a drive in in my area. My town’s one closer up in the nineties and now just hosts the swap meet every weekend. But the next town over still has a busy one! The diner feels like walking back in time. It hasn’t been renovated since the ‘80s. I love it.

There was a "ride" down at Universal Studios about it. When it first opened, this thing was awesome. Had an actual vortex generator in the show scene that was strong enough to rip anything that wasn't tied down off your body. Several people lost glasses, and other misc things when I went the first time. Epic. Went back a few years later, and it was lame. I think they themed up the queue a bit better, a facelift or something, but they toned down the main attraction big time. Nobody lost their glasses or anything. Barely even got sprinkled with water. Either it didn't age well, or they toned it down. I guess it pulling objects off people became a problem with flying debris and possibly getting caught up in the works of the attraction. It eventually got replaced anyway.

We just had a tornado hit on of our small communities here in Kentucky the week before last Christmas. Many many many homes were blown away many people were also. They are just now getting some homes rebuilt. Some people were displaced and because it was a poor community many of them will never get back to where they were. I definately believe the cows and trucks and trees flying around in this movie. We even had a train pulled off the tracks. It looks much better now hard working people cleaning up all the time but now it just looks more bare not as many houses , trees, businesses,. etc. Loved your reaction.

I know this is a year late, but i am just finding this video, and had done a little research on the trucks in the past, and didn't see any comments about them, so i thought i would comment. while the truck in the first scene was a 3500, the truck was suppose to be a 2500, and they used a mix of 2500 and 1500 trucks during filming i think they used as much as 10 trucks in total.

I think it's important to remember that CGI in the 90's was, in most instances, the result of groundbreaking development; the technology simply didn't exist prior. These were pioneers for the stunning CGI visual effects we have today. Especially more so with James Cameron films, which pushed the envelope a lot further than most with The Abyss, Terminator 2 and Titanic, and a lot of technology was invented specifically for the purpose of creating the visuals in his films - all of which has been utilised by films today. Twister is fantastic for its era and remains impressive (even with continuity errors such as the broken windscreen). It's incredible what technological advances can do. Comparing this with the twister in The Wizard of Oz, and then San Andreas, it's wonderful to see how film making has evolved, however - especially the case with Twister and San Andreas - it is unfair to compare the two. San Andreas wouldn't have been the visual spectacle it was without films like Twister paving the way.

There is a drive in theatre in Tulsa, OK called the Admiral Twin. It was built in 1951 and my parents went to it when they were young and I've been there a few times. It burned down Sept. 3, 2010 but they built it back and I've been to it since then as well. The movie "The Outsiders" had a scene filmed there where they are watching a movie at the drive in. The Drive in theatre from this movie was filmed in Guthrie, OK. The production built a fake drive-in there just to destroy it.

David Letterman started out as a weatherman on a local news station. When he ended up having his own late night comedy show, he interviewed Bill Paxton right before the release of this movie. He asked Bill something like "You're seriously in a movie about weather?". Look it up and check it out. Hilarious stuff....

Watched this in the theaters at a birthday party in 6th grade. I remember thinking the special effects looked really good. It got praises for the effects back in the day.

When the F5 that hit us years and years ago the sirens never went off....they had rusted out. the city police risked their lives driving through the neighborhoods blaring their own sirens, and yelling into a bullhorn. 17 people were killed, including a couple of my friends. So every Monday for the past 30 years (except holidays) they always ring them exactly at noon. And so when we were hit with another one a little over 5 months ago,, the sirens went off when they were supposed to. No one died.

There's a movie I rarely see a reaction to. It's America's Sweethearts with Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta Jones, Billy Crystal, and more. Enjoying the channel.

My local Best Buy had a huge display featuring this film. They were using it to demonstrate the latest technology known as DVD.

Now you see why they got so many trucks, because even though you see the truck gets damaged the next scene it looks new.

I love Michael Crichton stuff and with him involved in this made it a must watch for me back in the 90s.

with windshields and the like they can be repaired during production, but the reason to buy 6 is largely for effect. They'd have one reinforced for stunt work like the crazed driving scenes, one for close ups where they'd have the cast in and either on a flatbed running alongside a camera rig or a camera rig driving alongside the cast as they are driving. one for demolition scenes where they have the trucks utterly trashed one for wide and long shots where again stuntmen would be driving one for backup for any of the others if irreplaceable and the final would be glamour shots.

Where i live, we might get earthquakes and wildfires, and if Yellowstone goes, we're toast. Bill Paxton was a favorite in our house, and we still watch Twister just about every time it's on. Loved him in A Simple Plan, but also his role in the recent Edge of Tomorrow.
