I build relationships with my vendors. They save the items I purchase most for when I show up. I return my egg cartons etc. and they give me discounts or save my favorite types of eggs. Sometimes they'll give me the less attractive items for free along with my purchase per lbs that I make of the same items because I'm always buying local. So, get to know your local vendors.

I'm so glad you talked about organic farm certification! I work as a vendor for a certified organic strawberry farm, but we only have the certification for "proof". We grow ALL our berries organic, even the "non organic" ones because it just too expensive to keep one field organic and the other clean (they are close to one another and the spray can contaminate the other fields). I always tell people the "non organic" berries are literally the exact same berries as the organic, but no one will trust me and they buy the more expensive organic berries. On the other hand, some farms will qualify for an organic certification, but when they actually sell the product, they will take produce from their non organic fields and pass it off as organic! And people trust them because "They're certified". I hate farms that do this. My tip is to get to know your farmers and vendors! I get why people are unwilling to trust us because some vendors lie about their produce. But visit the website of the farm, get to know your vendors, smell and touch the produce, ask where the fields are (some farmers come from out of state), ask when it was picked, ask what variety of produce it is (did you know there's more then one variety of strawberry? They taste different!) Ask TONS of questions! Usually when you do this, you can tell when a farmer is being shady or actually wants to sell a quality product. Thanks for making this video! I love farmers markets and I want people to buy local AND have a good experience!
@MindOverMunch9 жыл бұрын
+Jessica Hetrick Absolutely! Your passion is so inspiring! I love it :) It's so unfortunate that some farmers do lie about their produce. Hopefully we can help to educate people about how to avoid the traps by, as you mentioned, talking to the vendors, and also not being so concerned with that certification if the vendor is credible! :) Thanks for your helpful response and for watching!!

Now many stores will NOT accept cash, even though it is supposed to legal tender for all debts private and public. But Wal Mart will now in some areas of the store will only accept credit cards. Minor thing? yes, but I fear it may lead to more control in our lives.

I loved this vid. fun. we live near Rocky Ford Colorado where Rocky Ford Mellons come from. So during the late summer we have farm markets, this year we got Mellons, zucchini, summer squash, spaghetti squash. potatoes, tomato and chillies. now we are also stocking up on butternut squash and pumpkin so I can cook and store for winter. I also go a gallon of fresh local honey for the winter also. they also take wic checks and food stamps. that is good for low income family's to have fresh and local foods.

Thanks for this episode. I'm an assistant manager of a small, but wonderful farmers market where I live. It is such a benefit to be able to eat the freshest foods available and seasonally (all our food comes from 50 miles or closer, with the exception of our fish vendor). I also encourage folks to talk to the farmer about everything you're thinking. They LOVE to talk about their practices, and if they don't - don't buy from them. Besides, this is the way to keep a local economy growing strong!

My local farmer's market is opening this Saturday, and I can't WAIT to start using it again. The last time I went to it was a while ago, because I've had to work Saturday mornings which is when they have it (and it's sad, because the place is just a short walk away from where I live). But one of the best things I ever bought from it was coffee beans from a local coffee place. They had JUST roasted them the night before, and when I ground them and used them later that day, the coffee was the most delicious I'd ever had without any need for creamer or sugar. They were expensive compared to the stuff at the store ($12 a bag), but to me, it was worth it. This year, I'm hoping to get green beans, sweet corn (I'm in Illinois where corn is KING and we even have a sweet corn festival every year with bands and everything), tomatoes, cucumbers. lol It makes me hungry just thinking about all of it.

I live only a 5 minute walk away from my local farmers market, It's a half inside and half outside deal. That way during the winter some vendors can still sell their wares! My favourite stall, though, is the menonites, and they sell organic local produce that is so inexpensive! BUT the catch is they're only there three out of the four seasons, so winter my grocery bill either goes up OR I buy more quantity and less variety of produce at the grocery store.

My daughter lives in Ocean Side CA. She brags about the freshness and that many more types of food can be grown because of the climate. True, and her mother my wife can find many fellow Filipinos to talk to, (using Tagalo can sometimes bring the price down if it is with a Filipino grower. But I told her I agree, but I have three bedroom house with yard space and I only pay $300 a month mortgage and it almost paid for. When I heard of what rent or mortgage runs in southern CA I felt sorry for the people.

Great video, love your vlogs. Had a marathon of your videos these past two days, loved all your older funny ones, very creative :) Have recently re-discovered our local farmers marked, so this Saturday, I'll head on over and get some greens for meal prepping. Any tips on how to keep the veggies and fruits the most fresh after prepping them?

+Lasse Svane thank you!! I really appreciate it :) We are trying to bring some of the old quirkiness back :) It depends on the produce, but I'll package my prepped veggies in jars or containers that are sometimes partially popped open with a splash of water, or a paper towel inside :) My meal prep eBook has advice on storing, refrigerating and freezing food as well :) mindovermunch.com/ebooks Cheers!

Seriously your skin looks amazing, Alyssia. I would love to see your skin care/makeup routine. Also, tips on how to achieve beautiful skin using nutrition. Btw, I love SoCal farmer's markets. Another tip for farmers markets is that some universities and colleges in Southern California will have farmers markets and usually its cheaper than regular farmers markets. I know that Cal State Fullerton, my alma matter, has farmer markets during the spring/summer season.

someone asked if California has year round farmers markets, I couldn't reply to them :/ however it depends on where exactly you live. most bigger cities have them year round! :)

You bought some great things Hun. Love those tips, and here if I take $20 with me, it wouldn't get me much. Things are so expensive in Australia at the moment.

My favorite thing to get is kohlrabi, actually. I freaking love kohlrabi, but I can't ever find it anywhere except at farmer's markets. And even then, a lot of vendors don't carry them. This summer I went to a farmer's market with my friend and I ended up with like half a reusable bag filled just with kohlrabi because I was so worried I wouldn't find it anywhere else lol but that's SUCH a perfect thing to eat when I'm hungry, want something a little bit crisp and sort of spicy to snack on, but I don't want to reach for chips or anything else. Something else I love to buy are potatoes, and green beans, because I've found an easy way to steam those in the microwave with a bowl and cling wrap, and that makes a perfect meal where I don't put anything at all on them. Not even butter or salt or pepper. Just the potatoes and green beans straight taste awesome. Same with carrots added to the mix but I don't find those as often. I wish I lived somewhere like CA where I could go to the farmer's market all the time, but I live in the Midwest so we only get farmer's markets for a few months of the year. The rest of the year, I have to go to the grocery store.

+sunstripe85 Yes! Love kohlrabi! I do feel lucky to have the markets here in CA. I still go to the grocery store too because I don't get everything at the market but I always love the food I do get there more :)
