Rice prices may soar to 65 pesos, more than triple the promised 20 pesos per kilo by the president.

I'm at loss to understand why the Philippines, with all it's rice fields, is importing rice. It never used to be this way and Marcos should be ashamed of himself, but I understand why. Somebody is making money .. somebody in the logistic chain is getting rich because there's no way rice will be cheaper if you're importing it and retailers know people will pay for what they need, regardless of cost. Your current system is, unfortunately, a double edged sword - if local farmers can't survive, they don't grow it and create a shortage . rice is then imported by the government. In a perfect world, the Government would pay the difference between what they promise the people and what the actual cost was .. but they can't afford it. That's why rice is still over 20 pesos per kilo. The same is true with any commodity. Why? Because the government is involved and governments are notoriously inefficient and corrupt. In a free market system, supply and demand control the price, the people, not the government. When prices are higher, farmers grow it .. when prices are low, they don't. Also, keep in mind the time between shortage and harvest, people need to plan, but most don't and government is counting on that. Governments love creating shortages, they thrive on it. If you give the Government power in an emergency, they'll create emergencies to get their power. Unless there's a catastrophic event, importing a commodity like rice should be a one-time shot and government should help people prepare. If rice takes 3 months to harvest, then they should have 3 months supply on hand at all times. It's called being prepared and even governments can do it.

Its an illusion po that our rice fields can support the current population. Siguro in the past na wala pa masyadong urbanization at konti pa tao. Arable lands are limited din kasi Archipelgaic State tayo. Yes some farmers can support a specific location. RICE TARIFFICATION LAW is the problem. The government gave too much power sa private rice importers. Gov to Gov rice importation is better because you can agree on a cheaper price.
