My dear friend, you cant keep the lights on forever. But switching off suddenly is not the best. You would have to gradually introduce them to darkness. Remember they have always known light. So its a gradual process. Start by reducing the light intensity on a weekly bases until you get to zero light. Hope this solves your problem.

Good suggestion. Also maybe small battery bank with dimmable LED lights. He can charge battery bank during the day with grid electricity or very small cheap sola arrat system with just two panels. Just an idea.

I used to have this happen with my broilers when I started to put out the light at four weeks old. So instead of just putting it out I would leave the canvas up so they would be able to see the sun gradually go down. I also think them being cold is a contribution to them piling up together. Try yo make the house as warm as possible during the nights the temperatures can go really low at times. Hope this s helps. Don't give up you have come this far my friend. Keep inspiring us.😘🙌

I had trouble with the large Cornish cross meat birds wanting to pile up and found they would not use squared perches AT ALL. In a pinch I just cut some tree limbs and had them mounted only about six inches off the ground and suddenly the birds were stepping up and roosting side by side with no room for others to squat beneath the limbs and get pooped on by the others. It seems that with perches SIZE MATTERS. They reject areas where the limbs are wide enough to splay their feet and also reject areas so small the foot wraps all the way around as they seem to tilt forward there and constantly rock for balance. As they grew they moved to thicker parts of the limbs. Can you lower your perches and replace the squared boards with random limbs? Also moving the perches near the walls makes them feel more secure and sheltered versus just spread around wide open areas

Happened to me before, I lost 15birds. Gave them to the dog. Put one light in the center of the house: it will be the safest option. They can pile on top of each other unless they have a corner or wall. All the best

It is a bad idea to give them to to dog, because this dog will know how good the chiken raw test then he will go after the flock one day.

@@maryarlynngene8009 he is quiet well behaved in that way and doesn’t do that. Also the chicken house was such that dogs couldn’t get in. However I had quite an attack from cats. I never knew cats kill chickens. And they are very sneaky. They find all kinds of ways to enter your chicken house

@@maryarlynngene8009 Its ok as long as you don't give them direct and raw. A You can de-feather the chicken and at least boil or roast them before giving the the dogs. This way the dogs wont have taste of raw chicken and will not have interest on attacking them.

Switch light on. To reduce cost of electricity, use low voltage bulbs (energy savers). Alternatively, to counter power interuptions you can have solar power torches. Buy some few so that you scatter them around the chicken room

How thick is your bedding? If you have really deep bedding that's thick enough to cause a decent amount of thermal insulation plus give off heat that would help. But you have to keep it in.

mama chickens usually teach the chicks to roost. We have had to take over this job for them. We ordered 50 chicks all at once and every night I would go in after dark and pick them all up and put them up on the roosts. Every single night until all were roosting on their own! Not kidding! Roosting serves many safety purposes for the chickens. It gets them out of the way of snakes and ground predators and also gets them into a warmer part of the barn or coop. Also it makes it harder for things like owls to find them because they look like a wall to them in the dark. And of course keeps them from suffocating. They will usually find a spot beside a buddy and keep that spot for their whole lives. One thing you CAN do to help them when they are young is to gather feathers or buy feather dusters and hang them up from the ceiling from string and the chicks will gather under them as if they were gathering under the wings of the mother hen. Then when you need them to start roosting lift them higher over top of the roosts and the chicks will get the idea to fly up to the roosts. it wont take long before they dont need the "mother" anymore than if they had a real hen to teach them. BTW When they are chicks the only reason for lighting is heat. Hens need 16 hours of light to produce eggs. Chicks dont need that so a natural day and night cycle is best for them. Artificial light is actually detrimental to their growth so if you are lighting them up at night you might even be stunting their growth! Also if your chickens have swollen eyes you might need to drain the pus out or they can go blind because the bacteria sitting against the cornea can cause blindness

Doc. Keep lights above the roosting areas. After dark. Turn of half. For example. 2 lights above each roost. They will try to roost more this way. Then the next lot once they have settled on the roosts. I'm busy with the same learning experience now. Seems to be working on the old battery hens so far.

Couple bits of advise. They need to LEARN TO ROOST. That they can stay warm while roosting! Turn off light BEFORE dark! Or, put on a dimmer, and slowly turn down light to immitate natural dusk. I have not ever known chicks to go towards light, just for lights sake. They will go towards light if they are cold, and think it is a heat source. If you can get the lights off, before dusk, when it is still warm, they will get on the roost. I am sure it is not too cold for them. They can keep themselves warm on the roosts, next to each other. But if they are not on the roost, before it gets cool, (and it always gets cool when the sun goes down) then they will congregate towards a light, for heat. I hope I am explaining this correctly. So, they will go to roost, once the sun BEGINS to go down. If you NEED LIGHT, then use a dimmer. A dimmer will trigger them to roost. You can also put some on the roost bars. try to find a couple that hang to gether anyway. Place them up against each other on the roost, with DIM LIGHTING. They can keep warm on the roost, snuggled next to each other. If you go from light to dark, in a flip of the switch, and the sun is down, then the air will be cool, and they will be triggered to huddle towards a light for heat. But if the air is still warm from the sun, and it is getting dim, they will go towards the roost. If they dont, then place some on the roost yoursellf. Maybe you are needing the light to work past dark. If that is the case, can you try to not work in there past dark for just a few days? This way, they will learn that they get wram on the roost, by sitting next to each other, puffing their feathers, and covering their legs and feet by squatting. Once they learn to do that, then they will do it every time. Even if you need to work past dark. But they must learn that this is how you stay warm. Right now, they are still acting like baby chicks, huddling under a light source for heat. Even though it may not be "COLD", they may think that it is cool, and think they need to prepare for it to get cold. They need to learn that they need to roost, and that they will be warm on the roost. But you need them to do it a few days in a row, for it to become their behavior. Sounds like they have not learned this yet. Hope all this makes sense. GOOD LUCK!

Sorry to hear about your suffocated chickens. My chickens all sleep looking towards the last light at night (house, carport, street lamp depending on the coop), with the dominant male (regardless of age) facing sunrise direction. This was a problem because a group of broilers insisted in sleeping in a place where they could be rained upon. We ended up buying small solar garden lamps placed in some coops to encourage them to sleep under cover. Broilers don't roost. I have some bare necks to that like to trapeze walk and fly to all the branches of the perches without touching the floor. If you have an attacking rooster, pin it to the ground with a wide hand and peck it on the back of the neck to show who is big chook. If you have to carry a sacred hen, pecking it a few times on the back of the neck makes it relax. They will recognise you.

in the winter i keep a heat/light in the center of the coop so this does not happen, some use the roost, some use the floor, some use the nest boxes, it seems they use whatever option that is closest to the light.

If the lights are for heat, you can switch to the ceramic bulbs that only give heat without light, then they don't have to adjust when you turn them off.

I don't use the hybrid chickens because they tend to pileup and are skidish. I use heavier birds because they are more calm and don't pile up as much. I know many other people who use larger breeds for the same reason. You could also turn off the light before the sun goes down so the light dims as the sun goes down.

You have to cover the upper part near the perches. They don't like to see outside at night and you iron sheets seem to cover the bottom half. The bird needs the area around to be covered

Sorry for that, it really disheartens, I once suffocated my chicks during feeding time, as I was spreading feeds on the trays, I didn't check the bottom side, only to find some dead during the next feeding time. You will triumph.

One morning about a month ago I woke up to 30of my birds dead....I never have cried so hard like that day. I called the vet to perform an autopsy thought it was an outbreak or sth. Turns out It was suffocation I got them out the brooder that very day. Then I gradually introduced lights off so by 6pm I'm done with changing their water and feeding by the time darkness creeps in my babies are sleeping.

Why not put enough light or good florescent long bulbs that can light the whole area not only one location. Also note darkness can lead to snakes to slip into the farm. I think putting enough light everywhere is a better solution. Keeping the bird in darkness is not a good idea. Please, review and check again.

For me I suggest you don't put off the lights cos they are still young until they are older, then you remove one bulb for 2or3 weeks, remove another bulb for another weeks like that they will get use to darkness. It happened to me and my doc gave me this idea, it really worked. Now my birds sleep without lights. Stay safe

I think you can use the powder in the drinking water... easier to dispense....as for the perch if you switch off the light they will congregate on warmth a security but if you see them congregate means lack of warmth

Light acts a source of light and heat and security so just get the kerosene lantern and hang them from the trusses as low as you need bt high enough to keep them from perching on it.Also just put in some kerosene enough to burn out after a while thus controling the dim time in the room...The other agender to consider is the crowding its a security and heat issue since birth they grew up together in brooders thus indirectly keeping each other warm and secure get a coal burner into the room and also seal of corners by using boards that will curve at the corners to avoid one bird getting trapped in the crevices. Your house is also made of rafters so incase of temperature drop they will feel it immensely.Cover your vents just enough to lat air in but not so much to cause a draft... Keep noise away from the area barking dogs or noisy construction works startle and can start a stampede and over crowding...Alot said not in a specific order though hope it helps.

Actually it is not so much about them being scared. Grouping like that for bed is pretty normal. Problem is they are still getting too cool at night so they pile up on top of each other. Take some boards and lean them up around the edges of the building or make some platforms for them to hide under that limits airflow or something cone shaped similar to a brooder that can capture the warmth coming off the birds creating a pillow of warm air above them. Think of the hens wings that's generally what you are trying to imitate. Hope this helps. G-luck Doc n have fun.
