Maggots Trapped Under Sheep's Wool | Cotty Fleece and Flystrike Removal

When doing a routine check on one of our flocks of sheep, I noticed that one had a matted fleece, also known as a cotty fleece. As I removed it saw that I had gotten to this poor ewe just in time!

I can picture her going back to the herd and her best friends walking up to her and asking what the farmer wanted to see her for and why she's the only one who got a hair cut.... Lol. The water cooler stories of the sheep lol... And her telling them all about her bad case of fly sryke and that's why she hasn't been at work lol...

At first i was like "omg look at all that fluffy fleece!" Until i saw the maggots- maggots make me throw up- their so disgusting.

I had to help with a maggot infestation once But for different reason There were several Separate livestock sections I had the cattle and milking Each family member had a section We had docked the lambs I saw dad come in with a set lip and red face One member didn't know to watch the lambs What a heart wrenching day As we worked with each lamb Watching the maggots falling on the ground We used kerosene I don't know what ended up how many or if we lost any I went back to my section of the farm

We do have a regular prevention schedule (we use sprays, typically flypel) but a small percentage of the flock can be affected despite this. With the state of this ewe's fleece I would guess she was hiding in a remote part of the farm and may have been missed in the last few musters/checks.

Sheep farmers don’t dip anymore - they either have something put in their mouth or something sprayed down their back. Last time I saw a sheep dipped was in 1970 and even I felt trauma when those poor wet sheep tried to get out of the dip steps which went down first then under the dip and up more steps to get out when they were soaking wet. 😢

How did you know she had fly strike?

She was brought in because clearly she was having trouble shedding her fleece. I discovered the flystrike once I had a closer look. Discoloration of the wool is usually the most visible identifying sign.

It's actually the blades that make the noise, cutting causes friction, friction creates sound. The aparatis itself is actually very quiet compared to other types

as the guy said in a different video, the specific type of fly can take as little as a week to have babies and this is a routine checkup so they are trying to stay ahead i believe
