Hi, bit of an odd question but 26:47 are you allowed to switch lanes on the zigzag lines at pedestrian crossings? I know you're not allowed to overtake or park but if the road is clear is it fine?

Yes you can switch lanes on zigzags. Rule 191 You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians. This rules is primarily to do with blocked vision. To park on a zigzag would block drivers views of the crossing so they may miss a pedestrian waiting to cross. Remember that some crossings have 2 lanes in each direction so if someone is stationary in the left lane, it’s probably for a reason (like someone is on the crossing) so to pass them in the right-hand lane would be risky. If you are switching lanes, you should have good visibility in theory so you can see if someone is there. It’s therefore fine to switch lanes in a zigzag.

Hi Gavin, thank you so much for your effort and knowledge you shared with us, it’s invaluable! I am about to take my second attempt on motorcycle mod 2 in Farnborough, failed first one on not getting up to speed. Gaining local knowledge and tricky parts of routes help massively. I do have one question, when it comes to pedestrians, if it’s not zebra crossing or crossing with traffic lights but one of those dipped kerbs and island in the middle, is it still classed as crossing? Do we still give way? Thank you for all your videos!

That is a ‘pedestrian safety haven’ you do not need to give way. However, H2 of the Highway Code says we have a hierarchy of care, so if you feel the person in the middle of the road needs help, (such as a woman with child, pram and dog ) then by all means let her cross if you can do so safely. If it’s not safe to do so then carry on. It’s only a request to be kind, not a law.
