There is an old racing trick people used to do with 6 volt starters. Convert to the 12 volt flywheel but retain the 6 volt starter. What a lot of peole don't know it that the 6 volt starter actually has heaver windings then the 12 volt starter and will easlly handle the 12 volt battery. The best part of doing this trick is the engine will spin and start faster than with the 12 volt starter. I did this on my 66 dune buggy and never had any trouble with the 6 volt starter.

Certainly makes them easier to start using 12V on the 6V starter, and yes the starter motor will handle the extra volts just fine. I've used a 12volt battery on a few of mine.

Good trick Mike, using the ring gear teeth to do the final machining of that clearance inside the housing.

Not knocking it but your warning on sparks on the magnesium and then tell how to grind in the flywheel while running and slowly tighten the motor sounded scary. But sounds like you've been successful few times doing it that way👍

Use a 71 bus pressure plate and put a guide tube . The diaphragm pressure plate last longer.

I have put a 12v starter with a 6v drive gear. You pop the ring and the drive gear comes off. You’ll need a bushing for the bendex because the shaft is smaller. You still need to put in the thickener bushing in the trans ... again because the shaft is smaller.

If you have an old crank, bolt up the gland nut, 12v flywheel AND crank. It more precisely centers the whole unit better than just the flywheel and unsupported nut.

I had to use the engine as a lathe to have the lightened SCAT flywheel to fit. Stock 12V flywheel worked fine, 12V SCAT lightened flywheel had to machine it self in. This trick occurred to me at the time...

yea most of the time you need to run the engine and tighten the bolts slowly as the flywheel scrapes the case. even after machining.

Is there anyway to modify the starter motor itself and use the 6 volt starter and use the parts of the 6 volt? Also what about using a resistor block or something like that to cut the voltage to the starter or some form of step down at the starter?

not that I am aware of you can get a early bus flywheel but it has a 1500 crank end and 200mm and 6v ring gear. so you need to run a 1500 crank and a 6v starter.6v starters work ok on 12 volts. they spin really fast. Just harder to find now. Easy to machine the case to fit 200mm. then put the engine in and run it tighten up the bolts while its running and do the final machining. done it many times.

I'm new to this vw world so spare my knowledge.. My 63 beetle had a 6v starter and I went and purchased a 12v.. I knew nothing about different flywheel or tranny being 6v or 12v. Well the 12v I bought didn't work due to the bearing, so i purchased a 6v.. should work like before.. My question now is that while getting the old bearing out, a part of it went into the flywheel housing, I read a guy say that it could be left there and the flywheel will pulverize it because is a soft metal, is this true or could I damage the housing? I've never taken the engine off nor done any mechanical but this.

What about just keeping a 6-volt flywheel & clutch assembly on the larger engine? Will this cause any problems that I'm unaware of?

I've read a few times it works fine with 40hp clutch and am about to try it on my trike. I also read , but not as often. That the 36hp clutch will not work. Guys staying with 6 v flywheel like them bc there still wat cheep and work apparently quite well in racing applications... Once again... About to find out today for myself
