You need to test that SIM card feature for us, that has some potential for being a game changer and I have never seen that in a radio. And the hart button is something I like if it is a one button press to add whatever I am tuned to to a favorites list. And can you add podcasts? Can it provide a menu of podcast episodes to choose from if provided a link? Podcasts are to radio what KZbin is to tv.

This type of radio is the next generation type of radios called a ‘Software Defined Radio’, or SDR. They’re still legit radio receivers, but instead of demodulating RF signals via analog front ends, it uses software to process them. Because it is run by software, it allows amazing companies like this to easily add additional functionality via software updates. To add functionality to hardware, companies would have to re-release hardware with modifications, whether it’s a wholly new product, or people would have to mail their device in to the manufacturer for modifications. Software is amazing

With v4.5 of the firmware on this radio, SSB appears to be a bit of a shitshow. If it didn't support SSB from the get-go, I'll bet it may never do a great job of it by simply tweaking the software. SDR radios use general purpose digital signal processors and it's generally not enough just to enable a function in software. There are auxiliary RF components needed to make a certain band and mode to work well. I hope they can fix SSB, but I'm dubious that they can.

The user manual doesn't have hardly any useful information about how to setup and use the radio and the manual to download is worthless just the same! It can't do over the air updates and says to insert a TF card to update! The "new" firmware on their website is 4.1 but the radio already has 4.2! I found the firmware update file under Support but Windows doesn't want to download it because the site is not secure! After getting the file and unzipping it they want me to install an update file in Windows and do it over USB, not a TF card! After getting it connect to WiFi it set the time correctly but the date is wrong with no way to change it! When the display blanks out it goes completely blank with nothing visible on the screen! Now I see why this radio has so many bad reviews on Amazon!

A lot of more expensive FM home tuners (NAD) have it and they clearly work. For the rest it is a beautiful design and with WIFI and a SIM card slot unbeatable.

Don’t underestimate the utility of ssb for am broadcasting. Especially switchable lsb/usb. You can use it to avoid adjacent interference by switching to the better side of that double sideband am carrier.

@@FarpointFarms Another trick for receiving FM when using an am receiver is to tune to the edge of the signal. Known as “slope tuning”,it can be used to listen to the 29 MHz FM repeaters. The old analog modes are very flexible.

Cool radio, thanks for the video. Have you experimented with the HackRF One much? I'm a few months into using it with a portapack, mostly for cyber security research, but I plan on taking the 3 HAM exams soon and I intend to use the hackrf when the time comes that I transmit with a callsign.

Not that particular one, but a similar SDR based radio that works via a laptop. While it was cool to see sat photos and air traffic, other than those special features, I found it to distracting to actual listening.

Why is it called “short wave”. A full wave length antenna is much longer compared to VHF/UHF
@FarpointFarms5 күн бұрын
The long antenna isn't for the wavelength, it's simply to increase signal strength. A lot of these stations are from many 1000s of miles away. The longer the antenna, the better the reception.
@JimMarshallUK5 күн бұрын
@@FarpointFarms I thought that antennas are sized to match the wavelength of the frequency? IE Would a full wave length literally be an 11 meter long antenna on CB? IE Even 1/2 wave length and 5/8th on CB 11 meters are huge compared to UHF typically used by Police. Shorter antennas. But shortwave radios tend to receive HF, I’d think it would be Long Wave, where wavelengths are long, on HF frequently but they call it “short”. A resonant antenna on HF is long, not short. A resonant antenna on freq’s above HF are short. “Shortwave” Short waves are microwave, UHF, VHF

Just found your channel and found it interesting. I am not a radio enthusiast and need a radio for shtf. What is the issue with AM reception? Is it the radio or your location? I am a veteran of Hurricane Katrina and having evacuated to central Mississippi I relied on AM radio for updates from NewOrleans for the 6 weeks we were away. Why is AM radio difficult to receive during the day vs the night?
@FarpointFarms2 ай бұрын
It is my location- The closest station is about 25 miles away (very low power) then add in a bunch of mountains and I can hear very little (on a good day). It is a shame because I used to listen to AM all the time before I moved up here.

I am new to shortwave radio. As I understand from your video this radio covers all the shortwave bands. Does this include the air band and weather bands? Thank you for your informative videos. Also I see there is a "Mini" version of this radio for $50.00 less. Do you know if there much difference between the 2 radios? Thanks again.
@FarpointFarmsАй бұрын
I haven't tried the Mini version so I can't comment on that, but this radio does not include the weather band.
@addison436Ай бұрын
@@FarpointFarms Thank you. I contacted ChoYong. They sent me a comparison chart. The mini does not have an external antenna, only has one 2500 mAH battery and it is not replaceable, speaker is not as good and sideband will be available after an update. In my opinion it is worth the extra $50.00 to get the full package radio. Your a good teacher. I am just getting started in shortwave and from what people tell me I am about 20 or 30 years too late to enjoy shortwave when it was in its heyday.

What i dont like about simmilar radios is that they dont have any room to add circuits or as you pointed out, they put the ant jack in a weird place. Also the most used buttons break off. The fact that they included bluetooth speaker and card reader as a modern day tape player for your own mix tape, is great that they thought is relevant to todays user.

To say 99% of shortwave listeners don't listen to ham radio I got to say is not accurate .most shortwave radio owners listen to ham radio cuz there's barely anything worth listening to on shortwave anymore. SSB is a big feature that is missing on a lot of these little Chinese radios. At $250 all your really getting is a mediocre shortwave radio and an internet radio which there's a ton of apps that are free. I do like the concept but the short wave side of the radio is a little lacking for the price point. also I never heard you mention if it has a loop stick antenna or not internally for medium Wave band? I hope these updates keep coming gives me hope for this radio maybe it will be worthwhile I'm thinking about buying

Globally, that number is correct. Your average remote village isn't listening to hams, it's listening to larger government or independent stations.

I've been making videos on this channel since late 2014. Offers to do reviews came in nearly 700 videos in, and then nearly all of them were trash that I refused to film. These past 15 months it really has finally picked up. Good offers and great products. We still turn down 90% of it, but there are a lot of items that we now own that I never could have afforded without these offers.

There is probably a school of radio enthusiasts who just love traditional radio and really don't consider internet radio to be real radio. I recently bought a radio and decided to go with the Tecsun PL-880. It's a terrific radio with very few shortcomings and does just what I want it to do. I did consider the LC90 in this decision, but I just didn't feel that the LC90 is a solid performer on the traditional radio end for my needs. Not having a radio stand and a logical location for the radio jacks is also a deal killer. I wanted a radio that would be very useful during times of emergency by being independent of the internet and cell towers. Though SSB is popular with ham operators, there is more on SSB than just hams. You can also pull in aircraft and air traffic control (ATC), ships at sea, military, spy network, clandestine, and pirate transmissions. Occasionally some shortwave broadcast stations use SSB as well. The LC90 is a nice beginning for an integrated radio. It can only get better and may someday be a radio I want to own. I would also like to see a base station radio in the future. For now it may be better to own two radios, a solid internet radio and a solid traditional radio until a better integrated radio is made.

They are really missing the boat on Internet Radio. It's the KZbin of radio. Anyone can broadcast for free and reach a worldwide audience. I've been "On the Air" since late 1999 and still enjoy it to this day. So many channels out there and those don't include all the smaller mom and pop AM stations scattered around the USA that I would never be able to hear over the air. It's what sold me on this radio and it's why I continue to feel it's the best radio I've reviewed.
