I haven't used a CB since I bought a home PC in 1994 but I used to fix them and rewire mics for people because there was no standard wiring pattern from brand to brand. FM sounds great but has less range than AM or SSB because it doesn't hug the ground. I'm happy to learn FM finally made its way to CB radios. Should have happened long ago. We used to convert 10 meter ham rigs so they could cover the CB band resulting in an all-band 35 Watt CB/ham rig. The best radio I had was the Ranger 2950 which I modified to add CB. I had an Antron antenna 60+ feet in the air on the peak of my 2 family house which was as tall as a telephone pole. During the day I could reach from Burlington Ontario to Corfu NY. At night the world was my oyster. Many thought I had a linear amp but I was using 35 watts 63 feet in the air. A tall antenna with no big hills nearby is such a huge factor it can't be stressed enough.

@@Bhoffman0110 I was referring to AM broadcast radio. (530-1600 kHz) It hugs the ground because it's frequency is so low. Citizens band is 27 MHz so it doesn't hug the ground. I'm getting old but behavior of radio waves hasn't changed in my lifetime. If I said anything to the contrary I made a mistake, but then again maybe you don't read very well. I never said FM hugs the ground because I know it bounces like a ping pong ball because there is no low frequency FM.

Originally from the UK the CB sets are FM which CB became legal in 1981. I am old enough to say that before the legalization we had a lot of AM sets imported in from the US radio's like the General Electric, Stalker, Colt, President and Cobra. Personally I prefer FM after using both modes my personal opinion is because we are not in the peak of the use of CB unlike 30-40 years ago while CB is doing the job on AM users will stick to AM. I am hoping not because the Walker 3 looks a great piece of kit for the $$.. Thanks for sharing Eric

My father, I, most of my cousins and my uncles had CDL licenses. I remember 50 years ago we had to have a license to use a CB radio and we had to have a registered call sign. We were supposed to identify ourselves with our license number and call sign at the beginning and end of every conversation. I think most people ignored that. But, we gave our license number and call sign like we were supposed to. Radios sure have come a long way since then. USMC 1986 - 1994

Hey Eric , great demo. I think that'll be my next "grail radio" The price isn't too bad, and wow on all the features . I'm the guy with the Cobra 23 plus you helped with antenna advice a couple weeks ago. I got a new mic, the mic was shot. I finally figured out the ( 2A fused) yellow wire has to connect to the ( 2A fused) red wire which, goes into the chinese AC to DC converter . It's the "channel memory " wire that would normally go to the car's fusebox. I tried to make a ground plate for the gutter mount antenna, to see if it would at least work short distance . I also grounded it to a heater pipe, which seems to help . I am now pulling in some serious "skip" all the way from Oklahoma to CT . (I'm at some elevation) Problem is, Looks like I'm receiving ok, but no one answers my radio checks. (I do try to reach local truckers , not bases. ) A guy on a forum said to test the transmission by putting an AM radio near it , and yep , I can hear my voice through it (and sometimes some Hendrix feedback) so that's somewhat encouraging. I also figured out the screw on the radio's panel that increases modulation (501 screw) . Another guy said "maybe the finals are blown? ". (Most guys just said "check the mic first"). The Tram antenna with a new coax cable is gonna run me 85.00 with shipping . I wiggled the coax and it seems ok. Does it sound to you that I'm at least making some progress? oh, also I'll get the SWR meter and tune it. The chatter definitely isn't what it once was. The guys on 6 and 11 are insane. So if you have any redneck wisdom on this I'd appreciate it, I did try a lot of searching so I don't keep bothering you . But I am sold on that President. Someone also said Cobras aren't what they used to be.
@FarpointFarms Жыл бұрын
Without being there with you, it's hard to say what is causing that issue. I am leaning toward that antenna setup, but again, it's hard to say for sure. Good luck with the setup though!

Great video, as always! That said, it looks like President dropped the ball once again by omitting CTCSS/DCS from its FM-capable CB radios. WHY???? The Randy II omitted this highly desirable feature while the Randy III (Euro model) has it. Does President think it's USA customers are stupid and incapable of operating CTCSS/DCS? Does President think that I really need yet one more device that picks up NOAA Weather (in addition to ham, FRS, GMRS, my toilet paper holder, toaster, and everything else) rather than something that would keep the receiver quiet while listening for family, friends, or business associates? Did President hire some of the thoughtless design engineers that work in Midland's GMRS section? Why?

How is it a home base station if it does not come with a 110 wall plug wire?

You can add a cheap used Radio Shack 120 to 12V converter on eBay, and bingo, you have a base station!

This will be my next radio purchase I took the president bill FCC out of my car. I mostly monitor 19 and with lack of RF gain I couldn't deal with mud duck window licker in the desert.. so I put my uniden knock off CB with RF gain in the car.. money is tight but when I get a head again I will probably get this radio as the scan skip and RF gain and old school styling will make it the ultimate radio. I like to use scan when mobile to find the wide load convoys and chat with them and or local cb channels

that sounds like a good idea, maybe you can resell the old ones to make getting the new one easier

I've been searching the Internet for hours, and I have yet to find the answer to what my friend told me this morning. He said CB radios are now Digital instead of Analog. Does anyone know the answer?

No sir. CB is available in three modes now. AM, FM, and SSB, but all three are still Analog.

Put it in the bus until the ssb comes out then swap it out and put this in the bug.. You want the best for your traveler radio.. Especially with the VOX.. so you can do something like set up and still talk to your friends if the need arises.. zI am waiting for t he SSB before I get a new one.. Carry on Eric.. really enjoy both of your channels a lot..

I'd put the radio in the shack and I don't know why FM was a standard for CB radios years ago! FM has better coverage and range compared to AM since it isn't prone to noise and SSB was best for range and even DX communications. I left CB AM rigs years back in the real early 1970s because AM didn't perform good with noise and range. SSB was the choice and it did get away from the noise with tremendous performance in range. The audio quality of FM was also a tremendous improvement. Some of the fellas bought the export AM/FM/SSB base rigs which also had a heftier RF power amplifier plus expanded frequencies which were out of the CB band allocated frequencies. With the export rigs it was second nature to be able to talk skip to Europe and Australia stations. Although, converted Amateur gear was the best for skip talking since they had higher output and were cleaner with less spurious emissions. Thanks for your video demonstration on this radio.

Hi Erik, I’m in the UK and a complete newby to radio. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and learning a lot. I’ve always liked the idea of buying really good quality used gear which is why I’ve been using a 1985 bang & olfsen hifi at home for the past 17 years without fault. Is there an equivalent I should be looking for in CB. Ideally I want one to find a model that I can buy 2 or 3 of and have one as a base station and also in one or two cars. My wife and I share cars so I like the idea of commonality for ease of use. OR is there something new I should be looking at instead, given I have very limited electronics repair knowledge? I see you recommend president as a brand but no offence intended, is that because they’re giving you freebies or would you recommend something else ? Really appreciate your thoughts
@FarpointFarms2 жыл бұрын
I would have bought President units even if they were not helping me out. They are a good brand at a decent price- Some of the older ones will need some type of repair simply due to their age. I would get one that you are interested in, some of the older ones are still great units. Good luck
@JWilliams-bk5ey2 жыл бұрын
@@FarpointFarms Thanks for the reply Erik, with all your other projects I did wonder if you would have time, so thank you. I have a buddy who might be able to do some home repairs. If I wanted to get an older unit because of superior quality of build than new, and repair it, what would you recommend I look out for? Incidentally, I have a classic car welding & restoration business so let me know if you want to talk welding any time.
