I so appreciate what you are breeding for! This is wise and is in direct contrast with a world that has bred animals to not be able to breed naturally, to not be able to be healthy!

I’m sorry for your hardship and these decisions are tough. I just lost my one gilt and all but 3 of her babies. She had a genetic anomaly where she produced excessively large piglets and couldn’t pass the last one. It was a terrible experience but her sister is currently fostering the 3 babies and doing well. Sometimes we just aren’t in control of the outcome no matter how hard we try and the love and attention we give them.

She definitely has to go! I’m raising my girls based on your model. I have them in their natural habitat, a wooded area it’s 1 acre fenced area y’all are definitely doing a great job and that’s not me blowing 💨. Helen was very ill and her piglets died that’s the difference with this one being a bad mom who needs to be a nice Easter Ham and smoke those hocks in some mustard greens 🥬....That’s it that’s all! Keep your heads up. Y’all still have some beautiful piglets to be thankful for.

@@gwc3721 Chuck mentioned in the video her behavior following the birth was the disturbing too. She had zero instinct to bond with and protect her remaining piglets. That’s instinctual not something you learn over time.

Hi chuck, yer that's sad news. As I mentioned b4 miss piggy had 9 piglets and we sold 1 to the neighbor and now it thinks it can bully her 2 rottwielers around which is funny to watch. Anyway we separated the piglets and left just 3 piglets with miss piggy and the others were in a different pen, well 1 morning my mate went down and discovered she had eaten 1 which was sad , they were just on 6 weeks old and a good size for their age, we have no idea why she did that so we put the remaining 2 in with their siblings. Take care from Australia.

Farrowing crates are easy to build for whatever environment you choose, it limits the sows mobility and gives the pigs a safe warm place to escape being crushed. Gilts are difficult compared to sows giving birth because the birth canal is so much smaller, you should be there to assist in the birthing process, you should definitely make some changes in your process.

I agree, I think momma was stressed out by him videoing her , it was her first litter, I just think it was all to much and then they just left her alone for the delivery , I’d be freaking out myself if I were a first time delivering mom, I’m no pig farmer , but my husband was and I’m sure if he were alive he’d sure have something to say ..

When we were raising pigs we were very hands on with them so they get used to having one of us close which made it easier to be there when farrowing we would help with cleaning piglets Our main concern was mom eating them because if left to letting sow do the cleaning if she were nick one and taste blood my eat them all But like all moms giving birth hard to predict just when and crap happens Piglets can be bottle fed but very time consuming Had one born with birth defect that one of front legs was deformed gave to cousin to bottle feed grew being house pet LOL defect not issue once past nursing stage manged to get around on 3 legs and stump just fine

There's a time when we forget to realize that nature has its limits and no matter how simple we farm, it's still far from natural. Worst is when we want pigs to develop human reasoning. We long departed our natural ways of birthing at home or in the wild to now in hospitals. That however has not changed our DNA but has vastly limited infant/maternal mortality. I just don't understand how you feel it's better to lose 65% of your piglets over a few days when a simple farrowing pen will increase their survival, your productivity and profit. Doesn't affect the meat quality nor would it change anything else. You shouldn't be unhappy, disappointed especially, don't cross your fingers because you are responsible for your loss. If we were all pigs, your decision should make you the bacon not the sows. It's a stubborn idea thats not backed by much science. I spent the better part of 30yrs growing animals the natural way and witnessed such things every year from different animals. Your loss is out of your carelessness and you have not realized it yet. Ask any woman who has given birth if its easy to sit in one spot through the process let alone at night in the winter. How about postnatal depression? How about grandma support after delivery. Their experience might help you understand what the sow goes through unassisted and hopefully you can see the sadness of your experiment. All that said, I am still a fan of yours and the near natural way of farming. Thank you for all you do and I hope more successes lie ahead. I am a faithful viewer. Thank you.

Its hard when you invest so much time and money into breeding and discover a lacky in the mix, but I agree with you, weeding out the problems will only allow for the highest and best producers in your herd. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, I already know were going to rely on it greatly in the near future.
@greatskytrollantidrama44733 жыл бұрын
First mothers sometimes waddle around while dropping. We've tried to prevent it, but, even in a farrow run, they waddle walk, sometimes killing all the piggles, pacing up and down. Best results were to short stall a wet nurse in the same run, pull the piggles out as they were birthed, pop them on the wet sow. But yeah, don't breed her.

I'm with Saundra get her out of there asap . U may need farrowing huts for these good mom's because I can loose the whole litters due to cold and weather. I enjoy watching the hogs .

Even if y'all did go through all the painstaking & financial risks of building barns & all, if an animal doesn't have a mothering instinct, the babies won't survive. I'm sure you've gonna get lots of negative comments. Stay true. You're doing a great job. My favorite saying around the homestead is, Crap Happens.
@keithmcallister49173 жыл бұрын
I had a fist time mother that attack her piglets and killed them. So I took them from her as soon she would have one. We bottle feed them and she went to the butcher.
@valeriestevens52503 жыл бұрын
This mama needs to go to freezer camp and I wouldn't use any of her off-spring for breeding either. I'd keep the gilts from the first two who show much better mothering instincts and use them to increase the herd. As Walter Jeffries of Sugar Mountain Farm says, "Keep the best and eat the rest." You have to eliminate what you don't want and keep what you do want. As tough as these early years may be, keep true to your vision.
@tomaswilson27923 жыл бұрын
That's a shame, had a gilt that did that. She gets one more chance only cuz she was expensive otherwise she'd go straight to the freezer. Such is life though, looks like you've got a couple solid gilts in that group.

It's all part of life - a learning experience. You will have a tough decision to make on your reds, I think both are 'fussy'. I don't know that being a bit fussy is a bad thing when you consider how they might react to a preditor (like a coyote) and if they are good mothers that will make a hard decision. Good luck....you are doing great!

Sorry for your loss, but I wouldn’t be so quick to get rid of that gilt. She gave you 11 pigs on her first farrowing, it’s only natural for a young gilt to move around more than a older sow. I’ve raised hogs for 30 years I know she will do better next time. What is your goal and reasoning for farrowing free range? I’m trying to understand but going through the heartache and expense of losing so many pigs doesn’t sit well with me. Not being ugly here. Too much hay and sows digging deep holes is going to result in pig deaths. I know wild hogs farrow like this with success but domestics hogs have been bred to have way more pigs than wild ones do. A cheap hut will save you lots of money and heartache in the long run. I can’t stand to lose one pig much less liters of them.
@heavencantwait12183 жыл бұрын
I agree with ya Petey .. I just saw Homestead Rescue where a young couple in Eastern VA were raising there pigs this way as well, Mr Rainy, guy from Homestead Rescue got the advice from a local 20 year pig farmer and he advised them to have farrowing pens as well to keep the piglet safe from predators and momma from laying in them as well ..

Good thing the offspring of the poor mother look tasty because they shouldn't be breeders either. Too likely to inherit their mother's traits. The barns and the birthing crates are what allowed the weak mothering trait to get so bad.

It is like everything that has happened since the 2020 election. At least you know. Your process is working and will only improve as you improve your genetics. You will have "haters" saying you could have done this or that and the outcome may have been different, but you would not have known and you could have continued bad traits in future generations.
