Vocals by Youssuf Nasser, oud by Mohab Attalah, ney and kawala by Peter Iskander, arrangement by Farya Faraji. The melody is not mine but based on traditional recitations of this poem using this melodic motif. This is a poem by Abu al-Baqa ar-Rundi, who lived in Al-Andalus in the 13th century and saw its conquest to the Catholics during the Reconquista, an event he laments in this poem, giving us an insight into the contemporary Muslim view of the conflict. The maqam used here is Bayat, and the instruments are basic ones from the Arab world and used in Andalusian music of the Middle-Ages; a frame drum, oud, and two traditional Arabic flutes; the ney and kawalla.

I'm not in anyways against Spanish people and i respect them. but while looking at a general overview of history fall of al andalus was disastrous consequences for for not only Muslim world but for the entire world as well. Also it bore a new evil called colonialism
@pablogarcia.05
@pablogarcia.05 Ай бұрын
@abduljaleel4467 Firstly, the fall of Al andalus didn't cause colonialism, but globalism, colonialism was a merely part of this new globalisation. And in fact it didn't even happen because of the fall of Al Andalus, but because of the fall of Constantinople, which forced Iberians to explore new routes to the Indies
@abduljaleel4467
@abduljaleel4467 Ай бұрын
@@pablogarcia.05 true i don't think you are wrong but Constantinople was a major part of it. But also the fall of Granada was the second major factor which contributed to the development of colonialism as queen isabella and king Ferdinand got the political power, political will to see make a new empire for spain. Thus imperialism kinda kick start as well

@LeanWasoski buddy what is the difference between colonialism and conquest. Has ottoman empire massacred the entire balkans and filled em with turks, has ottoman empire forced converted Orthodox Christians forcibly has ottoman empire economically exploited the balkans to the point they starved to death. Again asking did if the aforementioned questions apply to Al Andalus. Do not mix up a coloniser and a conquerer

@@pablogarcia.05 I am from North African Andalusi family, and your words are not correct, a colonial policy on the conquered islamic territories with spanish settlers from northern iberian peninsula roots background and southern french, germans, italians, dutchs etc is in historical chronicles. The so-called "reconquista" was a series of international crusades launched against the Muslims of al-Andalus and colonial policy. Some academic genetic studies have confirmed this population replacement through the analysis of ancient Muslim individuals from the Islamic era and current Iberian populations living in the same area, they observed that some admixtures (including the North African) are lower in current populations living where these bodies were discovered. We must not forget that in addition to the colonial policy on conquered Muslim lands, there were also mass deportations, this is why many North Africans like my family are from al Andalus roots, you must not be revisionist and deny History. As is often the case unfortunately, many spanish and portuguese (not all but the majority) prefer to keep quiet about this great tragedy, but our families are witnesses to this policy. Moreover, the Portuguese and Spanish Christians continued their policy of expansion and colonization in North Africa after conquering al Andalus (just as example the city of Oran in current Algeria which was after the conquest etc "fully" spanish and christian), proof that the conquest of al Andalus did indeed open a new period, and these conquests in the Maghreb had the same motivations and objectives, Ceuta and Mellila are remnants of this colonial policy in Africa. It's just that they didn't succeed in Africa in doing the same thing that they succeeded in al-Andalus and then in the Americas, excepting in Canarias Islands (even if original canarians people were not muslims but north africans pagans).

I have a question for you, do the Spaniards hate the history of Islamic Andalusia or are they proud of it?
@gergerger5888
@gergerger5888 Ай бұрын
@@Ayhan-j8l That's a good question. It depends both on the age of the person and its region. Usually, elder people educated during Francoism tend to have a more negative opinion about islamic Spain, while younger generations (lets say people under 50) tend to have a more positive one. It also depends on religion and ideology. Also, Andalusians tend to consider islamic Spain more positivelly than northern Spaniards. And very catholic and conservative people tend to dislike it while progresists and liberals seem prouder of that part of our history. But I would say that the general opinion is positive. What it is usually taught in schools is that muslim Spain was one of the most richest and culturally advanced regions in Europe, while northern Christian kingdoms were poorer. Muslims also introduced Greek maths in Europe and they did major contributions to medicine, astronomy or agriculture. So, to sum, I would say that people in Spain are generally proud of the Al Andalus legacy of Spain. Even me, that I am from a town in the Aragonese Pyrenees (where islamic presence was null), and I would define myself as conservative, I am proud of it, although you could find people that tell you the oposite, maybe it is like 80%-20%.
@Ayhan-j8l
@Ayhan-j8l Ай бұрын
@@gergerger5888 Thank you for the good and complete answer you gave❤️, I always study the history of Islamic Spain and Portugal, and I know that golden age. contrary to what you said, in the Middle East and Iran, all this is the opposite, and older people have a more positive opinion about Islam, but the generation Its young people, who are often uneducated, consider ancient Iran to be more glorious, and there is a huge wave of anti-Islam among the young generation of countries like Iran and Turkey, who consider all Islamic governments to be a black spot in their history.

@@Ayhan-j8l I mean Iran was like one of the most culturally and economically richest places in the world before Islam, i think it's pretty normal to have respect for that past and it is not a sign of being "uneducated" on the contrary. Not like the maghreb countries who apparently their history starts with the arab invasion and have forgotten their berber, roman, and phoenician past. To your question about how spaniards feel about the islamic period, is usually positive as in the end the vast majority of muslim people in Spain were basically converted natives or mozarabs, so it doesnt feel like they really were some strangers.

I'm foreseeing a "Reconquista Epic Symphony" project. If it was up to me I would make 2. the first one for the Muslim conquest of Iberia and the golden age of Islam, I'd call it Al Andalus Epic symphony, and another about the Christian conquest of Al Andalus called "reconquista". I actually wanted to do something like that inspired by your amazing work, but now that I see you made more iberian music I'm afraid you're going to do that first hahaha I don't mind, I'd actually like to help. I have a contemporary Spanish lute, i put on nylon strings to make it sound more like a medieval lute... I'll prepare a video to show my instruments and stuff in the future and I'll try to contact you, no need to pay me, I'm just a big fan and hope to be up to your standards and of use :D for now just take care and keep your amazing work going!

@@mcorte2224The spirit of the reconquista was correct? Buddy it was a genocidal conquest to get rid of the Muslims and take their wealth. The Reconquista narrative was just their justification. It wasn't Visigoths who liberated their kingdom but Catholic opportunists. The Muslims also just conquered for conquest's sake but at least their rule was much more tolerant of different cultures and religions than the Catholics'. Very weird that you support such barbarous Monarchist conquests.

Thanks for this version! it is a somhow classic lament for the Al Andalus defeats during 13th century, but it also reminds me a fragment of the Coplas por la muerte de su padre, by the knight and poet Jorge Manrique: ¿Qué se hizo el Rey Don Juan? I know this comment is going to be lost in the sea of others, but Farya, i have specific questions about a specific song, done by Lisa Gerrard; The Silver Gun. Supposedly it's Urdu, but I can't find out at all if it's her re-working and "covering" (for lack of a better word) a traditional Urdu song that was "originally" performed by Robert Palmer for a western audience, or if it's something that was made up by Mr. Palmer entirely. I'd love to hear what this song sounds like within the original musical context it existed in, if it ever did, so that's my ridiculous request for a future piece of music for you to tackle at some point. I mean, my other request would be "do something inspired by the Scythians," but I'm pretty sure that would be a much harder task, hah, since all we have is a few musical instrument discoveries from tombs. Thank you for all the musical work you do, AND your epic talking videos about music theory. Al-Andalus sympolizes the last stronghold of the Umayyads, the largest empire that ever came out of the middle east, and the largest empire the world ever seen in it's time. the Andalusian civilization wasn't as cruel as you make it out to be, it was a multicultural Arab-Berber and Native iberian civilization, the cruel times happened after the fall of the Cordoban umayyad caliphate, when the extremist arab-berber moravids and almohads appeared on the scenes. the succeding spanish and portogese were more cruel and vicious, that doesn't mean the iberians can't take pride in them...

As andalusian I could also give a little insight if you want a real actual song of the last moments of Al-Andalus: I suggest you to investigate about the romance "Paseábase el Rey Moro" (The moor king was walking), as long as I can remember is the story of the last moments of the kingdom of Granada it was kept and told in spanish (My rough translation): The moor king was walking, in his city of Granada, from Elvira gate, to Bibarrambla's gate. Alas, my Alhama! (Alhama of Granada was the first place to fall into the Catolic Kings counteroffensive) Letters were sent that Alhama has fallen, the king threw them in the fire, and killed the messenger. Alas, my Alhama! The king dismounted his donkey, and he mounted a horse, galloped the Zacatín road up to the Alhambra Alas, my Alhama! He ordered his trumpets to thunder , his silver trumpets were played, and the drums, he made them to play, roaring for the bloodthirsty Mars Alas, my Alhama! One to one, two to two, the moors in the land and Granada each one calling themselves and going towards his king, Alas, my Alhama! "What's this my king? Why do you call us with all this sound?" "A bad new I give to you all, that brave christians have taken Alhama" Alas, my Alhama! There was an old alfaquí (a fiqh, a sage of the Law) with his long and white beard He spoke like this to his king, to the king of Granada Alas, my Alhama! "Good done my lord, good done! You killed the Bencerrajes (A prominent family in Granada known as warriors) the very best of Granada, and took from Córdoba Tornadizos( A "Tornadizo" was a christian that had become muslim, they were seen as less reliable)" Alas, my Alhama! "For that my lord, you deserve a very doubled doom To lost in one day, the kingdom and Granada!" Alas, my Alhama!. Also I find very interesting that the musical and rythmic motif used in this song and in the romance I translate are quite similar, I can see how it could be transformed one to another.

He is referring to Sevilla not by it Arab name Ishbillia but Homs like Homs (emessa) in Syria, That's because when the Syrian expedition arrived in Andalus and crushed a Berber revolt there during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Hisham, the governor of Andalusia didn't want them to remain together and causing him problems (the local Arabs didn't like them to begin with) so he decided to settle them in the city/region that looks the most like their homeland: the soldiers of Homs were settled in Sevilla, the soldiers of Damascus (Sham) were settled in Albira (Elvira) that was hensforth knowen as Damascus, and the soldiers of Palestine in Algeciras, the soldiers of Egypt in Badajoz and the soldiers of Jordan in Jean

Hey Farya - have you considered doing music from fiction - like Lord of the rings or something similar, but with your own rendition and thought behind the idea of songs. Doing a different melody for "Misty mountain" or "Song of Durin" for example. I think that it would sound really good, and the timing for it might be great right now. Cheers you wonderful human being!!

After watching your documentary on Orientalism, I understand I was ignorant and I am glad you've educated myself and allowed myself to experience traditional music. For that I thank you. I will admit as a *filthy*(Sarcasm) "westerner" it does sound 'off tune' in a way I without a music background cannot articulate correctly, however not unpleasant. I enjoyed this track.
