With how much media is produced, not all of it can get the proper documentation it deserves. Lost media is a term that represents those pieces of media that have fallen into obscurity. Whether it be an episode of a cartoon, a piece of music, or even a website, one of your favorite pieces of media might be undocumented, let's talk about it!
In this video, we'll be going over some of the most fascinating examples of this phenomenon, ranging from an unlicensed SpongeBob documentary, unreleased cartoon reboots, forgotten pieces of music, extremely rare merchandise and much more.
If you enjoyed this video, be sure to subscribe and check out my other videos! Thank you very much for watching and I hope you enjoyed!
Update April 2022: The start of the "Most Mysterious Song on the Internet" segment received a copyright claim, so it had to be trimmed about 30 seconds. Unfortunately, we lost a Quagmire appearance. Kinda funny a video about lost media now has a semi-lost section.

I have a bit of "new" lost media. I am a Ninja Turtle collector, and several years ago I was collecting the Kawaii Cubes for the TMNT. I was able to purchase 3 of them in various stores like Walmart and Walgreens. Eventually I stopped seeing them, and was not able to get the final turtle (Michelangelo). I searched eBay for a long time with no avail. I then decided to email the creators of Kawaii Cubes, asking if they had a Michelangelo they would sell me. A person replies and said yes they do, and to send them my home address. It sounded a bit sketchy, but I decided to give them my address anyway. To my surprise, I received Michelangelo for free through the mail, along with a Bebop Kawaii Cube. I emailed back to say thanks and also ask about the Bebop one. Apparently, before ending the series, Bebop and Rocksteady were slated for release, but only a few dozen were sold at SDCC. And the one sent to me was being used a cubicle decoration. There are literally no images of Bebop or Rocksteady online, and there's especially nobody selling them. So now it's my lifelong duty to get Rocksteady to complete my set!

Fun Fact: There’s an unreleased Director’s Cut of the 2005 Blue Sky animated film, Robots. According to Chris Wedge on the DVD commentary for said film with co-producer, William Joyce, he frequently teased (and even confirmed) that a Director’s Cut exists, and he also wanted to release it. It’s unknown if this version will ever be released, thanks to Disney shutting down Blue Sky Studios in April of 2021.

I find lost media sad, haunting, and scary at the same time. Sad because of how much stuff gets forgotten, haunting because of how it feels like something forbidden, and scary it reminds us of how, eventually, everything will be forgotten and be labeled as lost media.

A horrifying thing about animation cells is that a lot of them are permenetantly lost. A lot of productions either throw the cells out after use or don't store them well. It seems shocking, although I suppose it's not so surprising when you consider how many cells have to be made, and that they're really only a biproduct once the actual product is released.

When I was a kid my dad took me to see The Avengers. It was my first time going out to see a non-kids' movie late at night, and it was an incredibly powerful experience for me. I remember during the previews, they played a teaser trailer for Prometheus that was really short and mysterious. It scared the shit out of me, but also piqued my curiosity big time. I'm an adult now and still haven't seen Prometheus (though I am a big fan of the Alien films in general) and no matter how hard I look I can't find that specific trailer. There are plenty of Prometheus trailers on youtube but the specific one I remember hasn't shown up as far as I know. Hell, sometimes I wonder if I'm misremembering the trailer as being a lot scarier and more cryptic than it actually was... I was a kid, after all all, so my imagination would've run wild. Whether or not this trailer exists the way I remember it, I still get a lot of enjoyment over the fact that I have that piece of lost media in my head to cling to.

I have a similar story. As a kid, I remember seeing trailers for Tron on TV and there's this one specific trailer that I cannot find ANYWHERE. I figured the same thing, that maybe I'm just remembering it differently, but I remember the setting being similar to the trailers I've seen on KZbin while hunting for it. It's killing me that I can't find it because my sibling and I used to reference this one line from it because we thought it was funny when we were little.

@@kumatorahaltmanndreemurr yeee it's a very common thing, there's usually at least 3-5 different trailers per continent/nation release and they're usually like other movie ones, theater exclusive, and 2-3 normal run of the mill ones they play on TV or such, and since that's been the norm for a longgg time before uploading to yt was a thing, it didn't become a big thing to upload them until like 6 or so years ago and even then, they usually did not release the movie theater exclusive ones. Its probably not so much say loss media, just sitting in the Disney archive somewhere ^^!

58:08 Y'know, thanks to the remake coming out for Mario RPG, I wouldn't be surprised if a new plush set was made for it. Not only would it most likely bring a new Mallow plush -oddly reminding me of classic super sonic getting no plushes since the fighters one up until the tomy plush- , it'd also bring the possibility of a Geno plush after all these years.

my personal lost media? a book a read at my grandma’s house. it was a children’s book but one meet for 9-12 age range to read to themselves. it was a about a princess who was kinda a brat and an old snobby dutchess used a potion to turn her into a kitten. a nameless servant girl finds the princess and eventually makes an antidote and once the the princess is human again she makes the servant girl her lady in waiting and the servant girl gets a name. Tulip. My grandma was kinda a hoarder and after her death most of her stuff was cleared out. I only got to read it once. miss that book. (and my grandma too)

Lost media preservation has been a huge inspiration for me. When I was younger, I used to use this program called RealArcade where you could download casual games from a desktop application, and the installers would save to your computer. Unfortunately, it shut down in 2013, rendering most of them lost. However, just a few years ago I started a project trying to archive them from various contributors. There were somewhere around 1500 games, and there's almost 400 in the archive.

Whenever somebody talks about lost media, i always think of this Italian cartoon produced around 2008 called Pet Pals. Excluding the 3D-animated reboot of the serie, which is more recent than the of it, there're 104 episodes divided into 4 series. Thanks to the incredibly poor efforts even by the producers to archive the series, fifty episodes haven't been found yet. I personally take credit for ripping almost 30 episodes of the ones available on the internet. Finding the remaining episodes has become my personal lost media quest

An example of a “personal lost media” consists of pictures of my, at the time, 4 year old uncle sitting with infamous Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. The story goes that Pinochet saw a little boy wearing a military cap, thought he was cute and charming and called him to the stage to “show a real Chilean man”. My uncle is very embarrassed about it nowadays, since it’s like having a picture with Hitler, so he took all of the photos away. The only remainder is an old newspaper title page that I found after my grandpa died. It’s a very eerie feeling but at the same time satisfactory, to have found it.

THANK YOU PAT MAC, FOR PUTTING THE SONG LIST IN THE DESCRIPTION!! Without you I would've never found that song, ever. There is a movie called New York Ninja that was fully filmed, but for whatever reason, never went through post production. The only thing that survived was the complete, unedited film reels. The audio and even the script was lost. The reels were stored for decades until Vinegar Syndrome decided to use the footage to make a movie. They pieced the story together and dubbed it as best as they could. They genuinely put a lot of effort into creating the original vision as closely as possible. But it is still very sad to me that the official version the director had in mind will never be known. (Also, huge props to VS for not taking the easy route and turning it into a parody of B movies. I’m most interested in the background music created for cartoon shows. Almost every piece of music composed for a cartoon like the Mario Super Show is only able to be heard while watching the show, with no soundtrack release. The original versions of the music cues without voices or sound effects can easily become lost media, since they’re never released on their own, and in several cases with older shows, the original recordings are destroyed.

Just confirmed today that the version of Astro Boy Reboot shown in this video is now scrapped and actual lost media. The show is now being handled by a different animation studio and will be fully CGI now, helmed by the creator of Miraculous Ladybug (eugh). I’m so sad that we lost the genuinely great looking 2D animated version and I’m not hopeful at all for the new version now.

Just wanted to mention that two episodes of As Told By Ginger, a show produced in the early 2000s, premiered THIS YEAR when the show was added to Paramount+, and it wasn't the first time a gap of many years was between episodes of the series, as what was assumed to be the last unaired episodes released in the mid-2010s, and even then outside of the US.

I gotta say, I've never even thought that something I was watching back then may never be able to be seen again by anyone, let alone me. It is very interesting all the content I am remembering watching that is probably very hard to find. The special "in between episodes" stuff, like the Spongebob Summer Bash is the most common I feel. At least in my memory. Crazy to think about. It's probably not gonna be a thing in a few decades, cause all the media is being saved now online. Only way we will lose most/all of the new stuff is if we lose the internet forever....

My dad worked at a video shipping warehouse in the 90's and they had tons of screener tapes of B-movies that were being thrown into the trash lately that you can't even find information about online because most of them had a short life on video rental shelves at best and then were quickly forgotten (although they were very obscure at the time as well, for the most part). There were some true stinkers that he brought home but as children, that was quickly forgiven and the internet would have a heyday with them in the modern age. I think that there are still a bunch in his basement if they had not completely rotted away by now and I would love to upload some of them in all of their low-budget, cheesy glory someday.

The Pokémon the First Movie part of this is inaccurate. The girl that is unidentified is actually Voyager who actually appears in the movie, she’s played by Sachiko Kobayashi who sings the ending theme “Fantasy in my Pocket” alongside Juri, who is the little girl in the trailer. They also sing “Together with the Wind” which is the ending theme to the movie. Misty/Kasumi does feature in the trailer, but she’s not older, she just has her hair down. I’ve been fascinated by the trailer for years, I’m not fully sure why it happens to focus on these three characters, but I can absolutely confirm that it’s not related a past version of the movie featuring a time skip and Ash/Satoshi’s child.
@SlipsSC
@SlipsSC 2 жыл бұрын
i've made a comment containing a quote from the first movie's bulbapedia page that should clear some things up: "Largely because of the close resemblance, as well as Pikachu being present, it was initially speculated that the woman in the trailer was an adult Misty. However, this was confirmed to be false by Kunihiko Yuyama during the 2019 Pokémon Anime Expo premiere of the movie's remake. Instead, the woman was designed specifically for the trailer, and her resemblance to Misty was purely coincidental."

I have them all backed up in their original file format and it's great to see them again with the help of programs that allowed these files to be opened and converted into proper video files. It seems like a lot of the best flipnotes on Hatena were backed up and saved which is great to see but I hope a much bigger preservation project pops up in the near future.

Didn't have flipnote hatena so I don't know how you actually accessed them, but once you did you got a code to share with others. Some people on colors 3d put those up, though unfortunately any locked flipnote was still locked. This was a long time ago, and the Japanese flipnote 3d severs have been shut down. No clue of any it still works

One of the more interesting cases of "lost media" is the MMO Final Fantasy XIV, the original version from 2010. It was released to negative reviews, updated for two years, then taken offline and replaced with A Realm Reborn. But what makes it so interesting is the fact that the destruction of the original game is woven into the narrative. In the updates prior to the game going offline, one of the world's moons descends from the skies, and chaos ensues in the realm, monsters attacking cities and whatnot. Then, right as the servers go offline, everyone who was logged in get a cinematic trailer showing the moon opening up revealing the dragon Bahamut, who proceeds to destroy the world. In the rebooted game, characters refer to this event as "the Calamity" and it's the cornerstone of the game's story.

Man, when you mentioned lost internet content, my mind almost immediately went to when Machinima closed down. Some stuff was recovered, but a lot of it just got wiped off the face of the Earth, including a big inspiration towards starting my own channel; a show called Halo 3 Forges. While I can find the Halo Reach, and Halo 4 "seasons" of the show, the Halo 3 episodes are completely gone as far as I can tell.

It makes me so happy to know that the Mallow plush is real! I have been following this mystery for years, and even though Geno does not exist, it is still great to know Mallow is real. I remember going to some collector store and seeing the Mario RPG Yoshi plush and it blew my mind to see one in person. I asked the employee how much it was, but he basically just said it is super rare (even though I already knew that) and said it was not for sale. It is honestly overwhelming to imagine that there are seemingly infinite pieces of lost media out there that we don't even know about. So many stories are just lost to time, and that is unfortunate. Thanks so much for making all of these cool lost media videos, they have deepened my appreciation for the topic so much.

My favourite lost media was a KZbin video I watched around 2007-2008 of a kid showing off Gameshark cheats for Mario Kart DS such as having an infinite number of one item. What was funny about it was that for a brief moment when the screens of the DS were black, you could see the kid's reflection on the screen, which showed him holding a video camera in his mouth to capture the footage while he played the game. I remember laughing my ass off at the image of him keeping that camera in his mouth and all of the comments I remember were laughing at him too and the video was heavily 1-starred (back when KZbin had a star rating system before thumbs up/down). I remembered the video a few years ago and tried to find it again but it's definitely not up anymore.

Astro boy 2003 is the saddest anime I've ever watched and it's a shame that it's so underrated. The story is about a father (Tenma) who neglects his child (Tobio) in life and death, after he dies he tries to make a robot replica of him as robots are his specialty. He died because his father neglected him, being too invested in his work to care about him. Tobio wanted to go see his father at work and he took his toy car out to go see him (really sad, he was only 9 so it was like a kids Power Wheels toy) and he got in a car crash on his way there, killing him. His father is so distraught over his death that he takes Tobio's memories and puts them inside a robot replica of him, vowing to spend more time with his son. But he soon realizes that he wasn't the same as Tobio, he just had his memories. And after being turned into a robot and seeing how badly robots are treated, Tobio starts to rebel against him so his father decides to power him off (killing him a second time). The saddest part is that despite being a robot, he was programmed to be Tobio so in a way he was Tobio, he was sentient with a father and memories of his life. So not only did his father abandon him once and cause him to die but he abandoned him again and tried to murder him this time. After powering him off, the anime opens up with doctor Elefun trying to fix Tobio by using electricity to power him on again. He succeeds but being powered off causes Tobio to lose his memories so he thinks that Elefun is his creator, or father. Elefun renames him Astroboy, keeping Tenma and Tobio a secret from him. He uses his robot powers to save people and be a hero. The show gets really deep with themes of racism with humans being against the robots and it gets really philosophical with 'finding out the meaning of the universe', they get close to discovering it but humanity isn't ready to know yet so they don't find out. Its such a good anime and there's only 50 episodes so it's definitely worth a watch

That's the plot of the 50s manga, and the 60 and 80s astro boy too, with minor variations. I watched the 80s version growing up and I remember it having this bittersweetness to it. I didn't even know of the 2003 version until now so thank you for informing me of its existence.

@@biggjuggga4978 Yeah, I really love the franchise. I watched the movie in the cinema when it came out and around a year ago I decided to re-watch it and discovered the anime. It's so freaking dark and sad, it's one of my favorite anime's.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I think I remember hearing that they released the remaining Garfield: Caught in the Act levels onto a special lock-on cartridge titled "Garfield & Odie" - once combined, you get Garfield: Caught in the Act & Odie, the full experience. Great to have you back, man!

On topic of Lost Media Music, there is the somewhat famous case of xXImmortalMageXx. I'd love to see a comprehensive video essay on that one! From what I know back in the glory days of youtube that guy used to upload various Songs. Making playlists and many of them were titled for example: "Best electronic Music of all times" in place of the artists name supported by a nice background image of the generic Anime girl. Of course all of it was taken down once youtube pushed through with the copyright stuff. Many people, including me are still in search for lots of those songs, especially the original titles, to either give credit or find more of the amazing songs made by these artists. Like you said, it can be easy finding songs if you know the lyrics, but especially in the electronic/trance/etc. genres there is not much to go for. Often times trying to hear clearly the words in a sample can be quite difficult, even more when it's not even a language you can speak. Still I am looking for multiple song and artist names of files I had saved. Nowadays people reupload the songs and try to recreate the playlists. Funnily, I myself were able to find one name because after uploading youtube then copyright striked me for a chinese trance song of which I could not find a clue for when searching the internet.

That song story was really quite phenomenal. Amazing how people can come together to locate one song. Have you heard about "The Second Arrangement" by "Steely Dan"? It's an interesting thing to look for. There is some low quality versions of that song if you look em up but the official recorded song has been lost for now. There's also been pursuit of a radio host who supposedly played it so i recommend you check it out.

There's this one song I heard in the Dr*** & Josh pilot during the Karate montage and it's been driving me nuts. It's not Dig In by Lenny Kravitz. Maybe it's an original piece that was made just for the pilot, or it's one of those 80s songs no one can identify.

god i was in love with that astro boy movie, it was played in class at the end of the week when i was in maybe 4th or 5th grade. I never had seen any other type of astro boy content before then, and i genuinely loved it. It made me cry and i never forgot it. Im surprised it didnt bring it more people as fans, ive never really taken in any other astro boy content besides the movie, but i loved the movie so much im sure i would like the astro boy reboot show too :) i might just be very attached to it because i saw it when i was a kid, but i did like it a lot!

Can discontinued drinks count as lost media? Back in 2005 a polish soft drinks company created special Shrek juices, with cola, lemon and lime, black currant and orange flavours. All that exists to prove it happened is a single website with a single photo of the bottle. I still vaguely remember the taste of the green one, it was so special to me

my favorite piece of lost media is the dhmis pilot. this one especially means a lot to me because ive been interested in it since the day the teaser came out in 2019. fans of dhmis thought this teaser was for dhmis 7, while it was actually for a pilot of the tv series that released this year. the pilot was only shown at the sundance festival, then was never seen again. while we do have most footage of the pilot, its all a very low-quality camera recording. the last few minutes of the pilot have never resurfaced online from what i know. whenever clips of the pilot do get uploaded to youtube, theyre usually taken down by blink industries. ive been waiting to see this pilot since the day its teaser came out. in fact, my favorite character of all time is from that pilot! wish there was more footage of it. if anyone has any information on the pilot, please let me know

I think my favorite piece of lost media is the 80’s magical girl anime series “Magical Princess Minky Momo”. It had 63 episodes and seemingly was very successful in Japan, but for some reason, the entire series got lost, and that includes every re-release, new adaptation and even international dubs for it. There was even a new adaptation of the series in 2015, and even that one is gone, never-mind the Spanish dub, French dub, Australian dub - name it. Every piece of Minky Momo media from it’s release in the 80’s are all missing to this day. Later on, TV stations around the world did try to air the series years later, but seemingly every time a TV station would a natural disaster would always happen, which led to the series becoming an urban legend and even in Japan, people labeled this as “The Curse of Minky Momo”. Whether this be from the merchandise companies back in the day getting greedy and deciding to give Minky Momo a dark end or lack of documentation, I don’t think we’ll ever now. For right now, I wish wish I could find episode 4 and watch it in peace, maybe along with the rest of the other episodes, movies, and re-releases.

That clip from the early concept footage for the Astro Boy movie was incredible. The expressiveness is just amazing...watching him go from panicked anguish to trepidation to pure resolve as he fires is just animation bliss. Honestly, even if the rest of this overview was terrible (it wasn't...I very much enjoyed the whole thing), it would have been worth it to see that clip. How could anyone have seen that in production and decided to go in a different direction? It's absurd to consider. That sub-10 second clip had more emotion through expression than so many of the most overwrought melodramas designed for adults can accomplish in 2 hours. It's just another example of utmost brilliance quashed by executives who probably need half an ounce of coke snorted through burning Benjamins to feel anything anymore.

Holy shit... I completely forgot about that megaman show... we did some post production on the 2d pilot way back in the day. Then when the show came out after I had left that shop I was like??? "Huh??? That's not the show we worked on" lmao! We did a lot of post for 2d animated shows, especially for streaming platforms and some disney channel stuff (before disney tv started handling their own post production). But anyways can confirm the whole thing was 2d.

That's amazing someone who worked on it watched this video! That 2D pilot has always been a curiosity of mine. The scenes from the Film Roman demo reel shown in this vid are still the only clips we publicly have, and those weren't meant to be made public. Without them though, no one would even know work was done on it at all! With that said, I'm pretty sure we don't have much info about it in general. Not sure what your set up for work was or if you'd remember but do you know how long the full pilot was? As in, minutes length, cause I don't think we ever knew if it was a lengthy episode or a short proof of concept. Any bits of what happened story-wise in it? Some of that info/context would be really great to know, even if the full actual animation is never released to the public. If you can't disclose that stuff, I totally understand, and my day has already been made by someone who worked on it watching a thing I made!

@@PatMacYT Hey there, sorry it took forever to get back to you! I dug through some old correspondence, and I can confirm a few things. 1) The clips seen in the Film Roman reel are the real deal, that's exactly what I remembered the show looking like. I believe those are all shots specifically from the intro/title sequence. 2) As far as plot goes, unfortunately, I don't remember many details since it was so long ago, and my main job was overcutting updated animation shots-- so I'm not sure I ever watched the full thing. I do remember that once the 3d show came out, I had mentioned to a friend that the first episode was totally different from the general plot set-up I knew-- like, I think the entire plot was different. But again, the memory is hazy... could be that they recycled some stuff but recorded new VA pickups or something to freshen it up, and it was different enough that I hadn't noticed. 3) lengthwise, I can confirm the pilot was originally going to kick off the show with a 2-parter-- so regular eps would be 11-12 min, but the "pilot" was 2 eps together, and was 22-23min. Sorry I don't recall much else!
