the Italian soldiers did even more than they could have ever done, especially in Africa and Russia... they were sent to war on tuna cans, not on tanks..., with equipment at WW1 levels and inept generals and incompetent, with obsolete tactics and non-existent logistics. not to mention the fact that Italy had no raw materials and a ridiculous military industry. the well-equipped and German-led divisions performed very well, even Rommell praised the Italian Bersaglieri, the Fulgore and the Ariete several times. I also remind you that among all the Axis powers, the Italians were the last to retreat to Russia. going to war (in that kind of war) in 1940 was suicide. but this concerns the entire Italian military culture... we have never respected military virtues (I am talking about the high ranks of the army) and we have not been humble in learning from others.
