Fashion Critic Reacts to Valentino Haute Couture Fall 2020 (Pierpaolo goes minimalistic)

Maison Valentino ended the first-ever digital Haute Couture fashion season with a video & photos by the legendary Nick Knight. The collection was almost devoid of color this season, which was quite a shock for the usually bright Pierpaolo Piccoli, who's solo career at Valentino has turned him into one of fashion's brightest stars. The collection was called "Of Grace and Light" which seems to be needed and there was even a performance by FKA Twigs during the collection's premiere video. All in all, it was actually an incredibly interesting collection from Pierpaolo that really focused on the clothing and the importance of Haute Couture, rather than the pomp and circumstance that other brands took on this season.

Rather than circus, I see flora and fauna in this. Almost like those fancy, kinda old-fashioned greenhouses that also have birds on their perches in them. The stilts could be like herons and cranes.

I love how this collection plays with perspective that drastically modifies the look of the body. The ball gown with the dropped waist and the floral headpiece is probably the best example of this. Up close you can see its a drop waist, but from the larger picture her body looks so high up that it almost gives the illusion of an hourglass figure. The dress really messes with proportions in a truly artistic way that we never would've gotten on a regular runway. The whole collection is really interesting

Usually I don't like just white clothes and personally I think coture should not have any white garment. But when you talked about that colour theory "colour are there even we don't see it" suddenly I started to see and imagine those dresses in different colours. I think from now on I will start to see white clothing differently.

I think the choice to create the whole collection in white was also a reference to Valentino's legendary "white collection" for Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1968, where all the pieces were similarly in shades of white, cream and ivory. It was an extremely important collection in Valentino's history and pieces were worn by stars like Jackie Kennedy (who wore one of the models for her wedding dress) and Audrey Hepburn.

Not only do I see the references to the circus, I cannot help but see such a direct conversation with studio photography (robert maplethrope's "flowers" series comes to mind!) where the conscious effort to craft within isolation results in stark contrasts of the light, background, foreground, scale, perspective, within the atelier and studio. The consistent references to floral imagery within the collection also reminds me of "vanitas" painting, and the reflection of the transience of life within a visual document. Many Dutch artists would have to wait (upwards to a year) for specific flowers to bloom within their bouquet arraignment before collecting them to paint/photograph. The patience required to produce a singular image and the parallel of endurance of life within the collection and still life imagery is really strong for me.

this video gave me life!!!! i'm probably going to be redundant with some others comments but I absolutly wanna share theories about this collection because you engaged with the thematics of these garnements so deeply I was almost surprised that you didn't go for the obvious "white canvas" meaning of making an all-white collection... I'm just really fascinated by the fact that these are both incredible haute couture garnement but also /screens/ which gives it so much more meaning, it truly feels like a celebration of imagination, of cinema, of storytelling in a time when we feel cornered by real-world circumstances. It's all-white... but it doesn't /feel/ minimalistic because there's so much room for us to project our own emotions and ideas onto these blank screens. Ngl I also think "Of Grace and Light" is a genius title for this and you truly nailed it when you went into that color theory segment (it seems like the usual valentino rainbow of colors just went through a prism to be sublimated into this all white moment) even though it also seems to hint at religious themes, some of the looks reminded me of communion outfits... Idk at this point I think any interpretation is valid, in the end I'm just in awe that this managed to be so dreamy and awe-inspiring, to genuinely communicate emotions, despite the fact that the world is such a bleak dumpster fire rn. and also lowkey i'm glad that it can be both deep AND beautiful in a very palatable way bc some couture houses *coughs* managed neither of the two in 2020

I don’t think that Pierpaolo made this collection to be focused on clothes. He wanted the film to show the message. In this collection he referred to his previous work I guess because he doesn’t want us to focus much on the clothing rather than the projections, the film, the movement and the music that was chosen very carefully.. He wanted to give us a surreal experience and it worked 🤍 I also don’t understand why designers aren’t serving us like the way Pierpaolo did!! I mean he used his imagination to produce this magic.. in the other hand they gave us look books 🙂

I can see how, using the projections at the beginning of the show, Pierpaolo is demonstrating the current view of society being focused solely on color. By then switching to showcase the looks in the monochromatic format, he’s showcasing a vision for how he wants humanity to view one another, simply as humans. Also the projections could be showcasing to clients that the textiles can be customized to whatever pattern is desired rather than just the textile presented.

It's really interesting that you spoke about the different meanings of chrysanthemums, and I think that carries over the use of white as well. In some places in Asia white is worn as a color of mourning, and white flowers are used almost exclusively at funerals, whereas in North America, (and especially in North American Christianity) wearing white is associated with more joyous occasions like weddings, baptisms, and communion,
