Rene Gruau, Karl Lagerfeld and David Downton are masters in their field. Their drawings are a particular form of art that represents glamour and beauty.
Gruau, arguably the grandmaster of Fashion illustration, part French, part Italian renounced his aristocratic and privileged position (his father being an Italian Count) and chose the artistic life in Paris. His drawings undoubtedly reflect some of that high society feel. Lagerfeld, Downton and others have followed in his footsteps making the illustration an art form. This medium is very distinctive - neither sketching or painting - with the minimum of strokes to create the mood. Some may question is it art? To me there is no question - it has pride of place on any wall and will I believe be a unique record of a particular style of art from the late 20th, early 21st century.
The background music is by Les Hommes, tracks "In Spring" and "Vista Do Mar". The movie excerpts are from Lagerfeld Confidential (2007), a very amusing look into the life and style of Karl Lagerfeld, and Vanity Fair clip on David Downton sketching Daphne Guinness, Sofia Coppola, Caroline Herrera and Iman for their September Issue.
