You should take an old tarp and cut it in strips thin enough to fit in between the chainsaw guides. Then you can lift up the two end of the tarp after they're cut and contain all of the wood pieces in it to pick them up easier.

Thank you for the idea. I think I'll try making one out of old palettes, but use nails over screws. It is within my skill level. Cutting branches the normal way is messy and inconvenient.

I too have thought some pallet material might be a good choice but am intimidated by the planning process. Share a dimensioned drawing or photo please.

@@forresterickson6225 I didn't build one in the end. The plan was to take a bunch of boards, about 10-15 cm wide, 120-140 cm long and 2cm thick. put down two of those, parallel and maybe 60-80 cm apart. Then perpendicular to that, put more boards on top of that, spacing them about 40 cm apart and making them flush with one board and sticking outside the other and nail all of this together. Then make a second one and put them together like a pyramid made of hands with straight fingers. Sticks to be cut go on top and it can be made more stable by hammering sticks into the ground around the base. It's also easy to disassemble, takes about as much room as a palette when stored and it's pretty easy to move too. There is 10-20 cm of room between the "finger" boards, which is convenient enough for cutting.

One could easily "convert" this rack temporarily into a more traditional sawbuck by just adding 2 x 4's about 1 foot from the top and perpendicular to the long axis; the boards could even be temporarily placed there by bolts with wingnuts. By doing this conversion the sawer would be able to cut larger diameter logs at a more comfortable height for the sawer.

You have to make the saw part higher so you don't have to bend down and make a bottom plate in it so that they don't fall on the ground.

Could cut a "tray" of scrap plywood that's on the bottom; might work to just slide most of the cut pieces to one side? Make the tray 1 or 2 inches short of the base in all 4 dimensions. At least one could remove some of the cut material easier.

What, I have Makita tools??!!! It just looked like a nice green color to me... :D No seriously, makers usually paint or cover their tool brands in order not to freely market brands that they are not associated with.
