I just started shooting fastdraw thumbing at the beginning of the year. I started with a uberti cattleman, which I wouldn't recommend. Mine has been very temperamental and fragile. It broke three sear springs and after the first time shooting doubles it broke the bolt, it also had numerous timing problems along the way. If nothing else it was a really good way to learn how to work on them. I switched over to pietta in June since those seem to be a favorite for CFDA shooters. I went with a pair of traditions transfer bar models. After installing hammer stops, adjusting the timing, and changing out the springs they have been awesome little pistols. Here's hoping they keep ripping right along. It should be noted that when I contacted traditions about buying replacement parts to have on hand they were not the least bit amused by what I was using their pistols for and told me in not so many words to go kick rocks. When I contacted pietta about this they put me in touch with someone at EMF which is who I go through now.

In truth, Fanning is a relic of the the 1950's westerns, not the gun fighters of the old west, they were 100% about perfection of the draw/nerves and aim. Just like modern self defense. They looked upon "trick shooters" and "twirlers" with a certain amount of disdain. They worked on their guns alot, they worked on their muscle memory for draw and fire alot. Beyond that they had little use for showmanship.

Lemme see if I can join in: The west wasn't all that wild, and in fact much of our mythology behind the Wild West, comes from Wild Bill Hickok, who took the wildest examples of violence, bent their truth, and sold them to the masses. The Wild West was in fact, especially when accounting for changes in poverty rates and culture, less violent than many cities in modern America. I don't actually know/remember how much of what I just said is true, but I know that someone doesn't care, that person being everyone. Years ago I was at a persons house who had a very old Webley .22 short, single shot that was a top break with the release being the trigger guard which had a horn on the back of it. We decided to have a shooting competition inside using 22 shorts with the projectile and powder removed and with some soap pushed into the case. The targets were standard. 22 cal 50 metre targets taped to the back of a plastic chair 5 meters away. After the first couple of shots we saw bits of orange plastic from the back of the chair on the floor. Just the priming compound and some hard soap had enough oomph to fracture the plastic in the chair back. I can't see wax being any safer if it hit you. All the best.

Exactly! That's why the sport of Fast Draw uses all normal shooting safety rules. A wax bullet propelled by a shotgun primer will embed itself in wooden backstop, so you don't want it hitting you. It depends on which type of Fast Draw you want to compete in. For World Fast Draw you can definitely use it, as most of the guns used are Blackhawks that have been specially tuned and modified. They hold up the best for speed fanning, which is the style most shooter use in WFDA. For Cowboy Fast Draw (the largest organization right now) you can't use it since they don't allow adjustable sight, but you can practice with it to try the sport, just not in competition. Good luck with it.

The fixed sights on a revolver can be ajusted and there are many historical examples. Of single action revolvers found with the front sight bent all be it you Probaly wont need to bend a modern single action the guns are made to a way better standard today
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the sights on any single action revolver can be adjusted, and they generally don't come pre-adjusted even today, so normally need some adjustment to shoot correctly. They come with over-height front sights so you can adjust to the distance and conditions you normally shoot. I've had to adjust the aim on all my "fixed sight" single-action revolvers by filing down the front sight to shoot the way I want. The phrase "adjustable sight" refers to any gun where one of the sights can be adjusted up and down or left and right by an easy manner (not filing down the sight). For example, the Ruger Blackhawk is an adjustable sight single-action revolver that uses screws in the rear sight that allows you move it up and down or left and right. It's the preferred gun for the fanning style of fast draw (normally with the sights removed), but because of the adjustable sight it's not allowed in the more traditional styles of fast draw like the Cowboy Fast Draw Association that requires the use of a more historically accurate firearm.

However I live in San Antonio texas and there is not much of this sport here and not that many gun ranges that allow fanning to let me practice world fast draw. But I found a little hope when I was in search of a gunsmith who was capable and experienced with such modifications and he was here in my home town of San Antonio. Visit the gunfighter.com and learn about a man by the name bob Graham who has been shooting competition since 1959 and spent years learning the internals of a ruger to modify it for fanning and his prices are very affordable in fact I think I saw something on his website that says deducted 400 dollars off if you supply the gun and 995 for a top of the line fanning pistol. I have not done business with him yet so I don't know that much on how payment works. But he is just a phone call away his number is listed on his website.

@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 7 жыл бұрын
Could be. In competition you don't see many of them since the Rugers are the gun of choice for fanning, which don't have the fixed firing pin. Thumbers use the fixed pins a lot, and depending on the problem it can be an issue. Most times not, but the times I've heard of it being an issue is when your trigger finger is off a bit, and you miss the trigger and get the tip of your finger only on the edge of the trigger guard, and think you're pulling the trigger, then go for a recovery by fanning... that's when the problem can occur. For me, even after 36 years of doing this I sometimes have that happen, but with a Ruger it's not an issue... I simply end up fanning a hammer that's already cocked back... but since there's no firing pin in the hammer it's not a problem, but would be if a Colt or clone.

So a (real) cowboy fastdraw revolver is a Caliber 45 LC?
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 2 жыл бұрын
.45 Colt was one of the calibres available in the old west, and is the largest legal for many Fast Draw organizations. It's used because when we shoot blanks we want the most powder going down-range, and when shooting wax bullets we want the largest bullet size so it will be recorded by the sensor on the target (smaller calibres sometimes don't stop it). The CFDA and most organizations for the Cowboy style of fast draw have mandated the .45 is the only calibre allowed because they often provide the ammo at the large contests, and they only want to load one caliber, and so everyone is using the same equipment to standardize and remove that as a deciding factor in a contest.

When you talk about placing blocks in the inside and tuning to strengthen the internals what parts are being strengthened? I hear people talk about this and wonder what parts are being reinforced. Would it be possible for you to do a more detailed video on the internals of a revolver designed for fanning as there is no videos on such?
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 6 жыл бұрын
The main strengthening is by placing a block next to the cylinder latch (the thing that pops up into the notch in the cylinder to stop it and lock it in place). Normally that latch only has the thin piece of the frame where it's poking through the frame to take the force of stopping the cylinder, but with the block it spreads out that stress, keeping if from failing or damaging the latch or frame. We also place another block at the bottom of the grip where the mainspring strut reaches it lowest point when the hammer is cocked. This helps the force of fanning the hammer from being absorbed by the top of the grip frame... it limits the travel of the hammer so it bottoms out where it should... not being over extended. Other than that the timing is usually changed so the pawl that pushes the cylinder stops before the cylinder is fully rotated, allowing the cylinder to complete its rotation through it's own inertia instead of possibly pushing too far and being damaged during the speed fanning.

@fastdraw101

Hello. No live ammo is allowed at competition sites for safety reasons. Most contests are held in public places, not shooting ranges, so this rule is there to prevent accidents that could have bad results if live ammo was mistakenly used. Most contests these days use wax bullets on steel plates, but some organizations do use very powerful blanks at balloons. We have to hit the target to get a time, so it's a combination of time and accuracy. You can find more details on my site at www.fastdraw.org/

Sorry, but I don't know any gunsmiths left in Canada to do fanning guns. My first ones were done by a guy in Vancouver who retired 20 years ago, and the ones since were done in the States. If you're wanting a thumbing gun you can check with the local Cowboy Action Shooting or SASS club, because the smoothing they do to the guns is the same as done for Fast Draw. Just make sure they don't do any changes to the internal operation of the gun, because the Fast Draw rules don't allow any changes to the way the gun worked leaving the factory other than smoothing it out.

@fastdraw101

The main organizations in North America don't have rules that are conducive for black powder revolvers (many of the big contests have the hosts providing the ammo, and it is all .45 cartridges), but that doesn't mean you can't try it yourself. The ability to modify the grip is different between the organizations, so I'd suggest checking with the group you're planning on joining to see what their rules are for that.

Yes, the 4.62" is the 4 5/8" that I mention. I was keeping it simple because most of the Fast Draw shooting organizations mention 4 5/8" in their rule books as the minimum length, although I notice the CFDA now mentions 4 1/2" in their rule book. It's also different by the manufactures, so that makes it confusing as well to list a specific number... Ruger has it as 4.62" on their website and literature, Uberti lists their SAs as 4.75", and EMF lists theirs as 4 3/4".

So how long does a fast draw guns internals last for before it wears out thanks Kevin
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 6 жыл бұрын
I probably put as much stress on a fast draw gun as anyone, either fanning or thumbing, and I've been using my main guns for each one for close to twenty years with at least a hundred thousand rounds through each, and the internal workings are still working fine. I did have to replace the cylinder on the thumbing gun, but that was after fanning it when practicing for double events (for the second shot). Fanning a gun that hasn't been tuned to take that stress can wreck them pretty quickly, so stay away from that.
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 6 жыл бұрын
By the way, I should have mentioned that I'm using Rugers - Blackhawks for fanning, and Vaqueros for thumbing. I can't comment on other makes. I know of people who have broken internal parts, even on the Rugers, but so far I've been pretty lucky and only worn out the cylinder notches.

I do not really understand. Are also holsters divided in fast draw ones and usual? Cause I have a cowboy holster, but I have to push the revolver in with a strenght to hoster it. So my holster is tight and the seller says there is no wrong with this holster. (?)
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 6 жыл бұрын
If you were sold a "cowboy holster", then that's exactly what you have. A holster used by a cowboy needs to hold onto the gun tightly so it won't bounce out of the the holster while riding a horse. These are not fast draw holsters. A fast draw holster is one that usually looks like the cowboy style old west holsters, but does not hold onto the gun when you want to draw it quickly. Specifically, it should allow the cylinder to rotate freely while the gun is still in the holster. Personally I never called my holsters "cowboy holsters". I call them "fast draw holsters". The confusion comes because there is a style of fast draw called "Cowboy Fast Draw", but that name really just means that the holster and gun are more authentic to the Old West than other styles of fast draw, but the holster still needs to be a fast draw style holster where the gun is lose in the holster. If you had asked for a fast draw holster, and you were sold this tight one, then the seller doesn't know what fast draw is. However, if you had asked for a cowboy holster, then you did get one of those, but this style of cowboy holster won't be good for fast draw. I hope that helps.

I'd think most holster makers would ship internationally. My holsters were made by people who no longer make holsters, so I can't recommend anyone. Search for "Cowboy Fast Draw holsters" and look for a manufacturer who mentions their holsters can be used in CFDA contests. You can also ask for advise on holster manufacturers on the Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/2341482906/ Good luck with it.

How about modifying the grip? Is a birds-head allowed? Or is it even a benefit?
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 10 жыл бұрын
It depends on the organization. In the Cowboy Fast Draw you can't use birds-head because it's not period-correct. In World Fast Draw you could, but I never liked the birds-head grips myself because they are so rounded, so they're hard to get a good grip when speed-drawing the gun. You want them to be as grippy as possible.

How do I build a race gun?
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 7 ай бұрын
What sort of fast draw are you looking to get into? The majority of shooting these days is the Cowboy style, where it's using the thumbing style with guns that must be pretty much stock with maybe a tune job, so you can't have a "race gun" as was used in the past. Turned up hammers, cut down trigger guards, aluminum barrels, shaved top-straps are all illegal in most contests these days. Having said that, if you are looking to shoot with the World Fast Draw Association that uses these guns for fanning I'd suggest asking on the Fast Draw group on Facebook to see who's out there that can advise. You can find them at facebook.com/groups/2341482906 . Good luck with it.

Sorry for the delay... your comment had been hidden for some reason. The guns in the video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpmUiqeJotd0fqM are Ruger Vaqueros. They aren't the "New" model now that you normally find for sale, but the original Vaqueros that are a bit heavier and have a larger frame. They are my spinning guns, but I have used them a bit for Fast Draw when I started doing the thumbing draw before I got a Ruger New Vaquero that's a bit easier to use.

Can I practice fast draw using a Colt 45 air pistol by Umarex?
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen them before, but just now watched a video of the Umarex Colts. They do look like they'd work on a metal target. You may have bounce-back with the pellet, but if you wear the proper eye protection (which we use for wax bullets since they also bounce back a bit), you should reduce that danger. My main concern would be with the ability of the gun to hold up to the speed thumbing or fanning we do in Fast Draw.Even very sturdy real guns sometimes have issues, and pellet guns often don't use metal that's as strong.

The Umarex Colt 45 SAA 177 cal has a 5-1/2 inch barrel, 380 fps and a weight of 2.3 lbs and cost me $149. I just wanted the feel of drawing a SAA before buying the real thing. +supermegapenguindroid Gunter - In North America check the local gun shops for single-action revolvers. A couple of popular continent-wide chains that often carry single-action revolvers are Cabelas and Bass Pro. You can then have a local gunsmith do a tune job to make the gun smoother is you want, or watch KZbin videos that show you how to do it yourself.

@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 7 жыл бұрын
For CFDA, no - the major contest all provide the ammo, which is .45 shells, so the gun must take those. For WFDA the rules mention only factory made pistol primers, shotgun primers ot .22 short black powder blanks are allowed... there is no mention of percussion caps, so I'd say it's not allowed under the rules. You can try it if that's all you have, but you'd need a cartridge gun in .45 caliber if you're serious about competing with others. Good luck with it.

Hello. Sorry, but I can't see where in this video I mentioned ACP. Can you point it out? I do mention ACP in my Blanks video, but that's when talking about the case to carry your blanks, which is best using a .45ACP box. That's because with blanks there are no bullet on top of course, so the .45LC case has too much space in it and the shells bounce around, so the .45ACP case is best to keep the shells in place - kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5PVZKF8fp6gsLs

I have watched the "Cowboy" Fast Draw competition. Nice but the holsters are nowhere near late 1800 style. I would love to see some cross draw competition. A lot of the old west cowboys wore their guns on the left so they had to reach across to draw. And to make it even more fun, with C&B revolvers with the Holy Black...Nothing like a lot of smoke to make things interesting. That would be fun with my Remington .44's in either C&B or .45 LC Conversion cylinders.

Yes , Crossdraw was common back in the day ..BUT : 1. It's not permitted under the rules of the various sanctioning bodies . 2. Most gun clubs and ranges have a 180 deg rule , where the muzzle can not ever point behind the firing line . In CAS where cross draws holsters are used , the shooter must position their body so that the muzzle is pointing down range before drawing . In that sport , fast draws aren't a significant factor , and it works there . In the Fast Draw sports , it's primarily about speed,and a CD ( with. Safe practices ) would be too slow by an order of magnitude . There are ranges used for Action Shooting competition, and for tactical training with 270 degree, or even 360 degree backstops , but only one shooter could shoot at s time .

Can I modify a heritage arms or Ruger 22LR so that I can fan it just for fun and practice?
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 Жыл бұрын
To tell you the truth, all I've ever used is the Ruger products, specifically the Blackhawks (pre-1972 3-screw "Old Model" .357 converted to .45 calibre) for fanning style (this is the ONLY gun that will stand up for years to speed fanning), and Vaqueros for thumbing style. Pretty much all of my club uses these same guns, so I don't have any experience with the others, so don't feel right not recommending them. When I started out 40 years ago when fanning was the main way of doing the sport it was the Blackhawks that were accepted gun for Fast Draw due to it's superior strength. With Cowboy Fast Draw starting up in the last 20+ years there are a lot more stock cowboy guns around from other manufacturers, so they are playing catch up, and I've heard good things about them, but no personal experience so won't advise on them one way or the other.

For single shot events are you allowed to remove the hand that rotates the cylinder so you can load one round and rotate it under the hammer by hand so you're not battering the cylinder notches. Seems like it would make for a smoother action with less parts having to work just right ?

Nope, all guns must operate as they came from the factory. There are some minor parts changes that can be done to make them smoother (change springs, polish parts), but they must have all operating parts working as the guns was designed.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have said "forget to pull the trigger"... it's more that their finger misses the trigger during the quick draw, and instead of contacting the trigger they get the edge of the trigger frame, and think they're pulling on the trigger, but aren't actually doing anything, leading them to think they need to fan the hammer again.

I've seen a video of your "fast draw" where you don't seem to be even "fanning" the hammer. In fact, your off hand barely touches it at all. Are all the guns you use and have used actual Colt SAA (Single Action Army - the U.S. MILITARY designation of the "Peacemaker") "replicas" and "clones" in that they have to be fully cocked AND are advancing the cylinder at the same time? Or are there some "trick guns" in use that are SAA "clones" and "replicas" in appearance only and don't have the mechanism to advance the cylinder, but only cock the hammer and only far enough to fire "trick ammo"? A lot of this "action shooting" is kind of deceptive in that its nothing like the real thing and the guns are nothing like real guns that would have been used back in in the "Old West". And of course there's the "legality" aspect of people involved in these "sports" buying, possessing and using guns in countries that otherwise have banned them. Such as the Olympics, for example. Any comments on why or how its legal for "competitors" to do things the general public can't?
@fastdraw101
@fastdraw101 7 жыл бұрын
All guns used in the sport of Fast Draw in North America must be fully functioning single-action revolvers. They can be tuned to work smoothly, and some have the hammers turned up for fanning, but all must manually have the hammer cocked by some manner (thumb cocking, fanning, using the sole of my boot if you've seen some of my trick shooting videos), and rotate the cylinder. All my guns are used in competition, so none are "trick guns". If you saw me fan the gun (use my left hand to cock the hammer), then I was using one with a turned up hammer, which may be why it looked like I barely touched it. This is a legal modification in most fast draw organizations where fanning is used. This video points out the uses for a fanning gun at about the 7:30 point. Much of Fast Draw these days uses very stock guns, which are are identical to the guns used in the old west, with perhaps only a change to add in-frame firing pins and transfer bars to prevent accidental discharge when dropped - both of which are done for safety. If you watch the video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/sInZoamXgpqVh9U you'll see some super slow-motion of my draw that shows the gun operating fully, with the hammer and cylinder working normally. I can't comment much on the legality of other countries. I live in Canada where I'm allowed to use real guns. I've competed in Japan, and used the plastic fast draw guns they use there. I've also worked with UK shooters, who have to use guns with blocked barrels which were produced or imported prior to the laws changing a few years ago. In those situations it's unfortunately a case of following whatever rules are in place to try to do this sport, but people often seem to still be able to do it one way or another.

This is a modern sport, not an historical reenactment . If that is your interest, some banches of Cowboy Action Shooting do strive for a greater degree of authenticity . Historical holsters emphasized keeping the guns secure , and protection from the elements than speed . Holsters for CFDA do comparitively look a bit more like historic holsters . Trick ammunition ? Fast Draw competition uses blanks, or wax bullets , even though the guns themselves are capable of using live ammunition ( in North America ) . As to the laws , and Legislative Intent/ history in Countries other than those reported upon in this Channel , consult the Gun Rights / Gun Advocacy organization in your jurisdiction .
