Loser Bro Many immigrants (including German) came to the US and brought a lot of their culinary heritage with them. All these mixed in and became "American" overall but yeah, we know the original was from Germany today. It's huge in the US so it's almost like it's just "American" to us. lol Like pizza, we know it's originally from Italy but Italian immigrants came here and now it's "American" in our culture, though we still acknowledge where it originally came from. Like noodles are originally from China but Italians claim "pasta" that they make today as their own and so on. Many things In Germany originated somewhere else, I'm sure, but you claim them somehow. ;)

CrowEater Yes it was invented by a Turk, but I think in Hamburg (maybe Berlin). It is wholly designed for the German market and I have actually been to Istanbul and while you can get similar Döner, in fact those similar ones travelled from Germany to Turkey.

Hot chinese curry sauce with mayo or tartar / stewsauce with mayo is also delicious. in Belgium we have like 20 sauces to choose from to go along our fries. It's not that "culture" shock if you won't it to be.

I am from hamburg, germany. I like döner. Funny enough the best döner i ever had, was in salzwedel....a very small town. Much better then any i had in berlin or other cities. And the fries in döner is known here already...what i missed here is a croque....its typical for hamburg. Its similar to subway....but known already for over 30 years and much better....the bread is more crispy....and the most funniest thing is in france its only a warm toast.....

What I really liked about Germany was always being able to walk away 100% satisfied with the answers people gave me to all of my questions. For instance, upon arriving at Frankfurt, my wife asked a German man,"So, is Frankfurt a big city?" expecting to hear back "Yes" or "No". Instead, the man said, "Frankfurt, Germany is a city with a population of approximately 600,000 inhabitants. So, Yes. I would say that Frankfurt is rather large." That is how everyone I spoke to was and I loved it!

French Frites = Pommes frites are from Belgium. And there they started to but Mayonaise to it. Ketchup wasn't that well known that time. Tomatos were seens are fruit from the "south".

I don't know if they are everywhere the same, but pizzas in Pizza Hut in Switzerland are just plain wrong. Like one inch thick paste and and half an inch oil on them.

That actually sounds worse than the Pizza Hut pizza here in the US, although it's quite bad. Domino's is about the same, but Little Caesar's and Sbarro's are far worse. There's a lot of good pizza here if you know where to look, though. Still, the best I've ever had was in Südtirol/Alto Adige... although my judgment may have been impaired by the free schnapps.

Here in Utah we have a sauce just for our fry's called.... fry sauce, It's a mix of Ketchup, mayo, lemon juice, and other "seasonings" salt mostly. But it's so requested here that the major Food places have had to make it as well, McDonnell's, Burger King, Wendey's have all made it.

What is a doner ? To me a doner looks exactly like a Greek gyro .

The main difference is that it has french fries in greece while the traditional doner doesnt. Here in Albania we have a similar thing which we call sufllaqe from the greek food sulfagi. Its a doner with french fries and a lot of sauces, its pretty delicious :)

I live near a big Greek and Lebanese community in a city here in the US. I know alot of Greeks .The Greeks here call Souvlaki a marinated meat on a stick cooked on a grill . Oh and by the way the Greeks say in their country in Greece a real gyro is all of the weird organ meats like lungs kidneys hearts etc. but they dont cook those here in American because people dont like that gross stuff.

Currywurst sounds very interesting to me. May I recommend a "Poor Man's Reuben" sandwich. Place a cooked wurst, halved, or sausage, on a slice of rye bread, cover with sauerkraut, a slice of Emmentaler Käse, a sufficiency of good German mustard, cover with another slice of bread then toast and serve. You have actually forgotten the oldest German fast food chain. The German fast food chain I'm talking about is called Nordsee. It was founded on April 23, 1896, and by 1955, when McDonalds was founded, Nordsee had already grown to 250 locations in germany. So Nordsee is far older than McDonalds.

Never been a fan of døner. Tasted it first time in Malta. But the souvlaki I had in one grill restaurant in Athens was amazing. The tzatziki and the chips with whatever meat you like was fantastic. Still have wet dreams about that souvlaki.

guys whats about backfisch ? you´ve gotta taste backfisch. I´m from kiel and here in Kiel you can buy fresh fish in any time of the year, but when the "kieler Woche" takes place (the worlds largest sailing cup) There is even more. And in "Strande" every year on the same spot there´s this trailer which sells backfish. Its a tradition, almost everyone i know goes there at least once during the kieler woche. (fact: schilksee which is directly adjacend to strande (the two villages are basicly one) is the place where 1936 olympia took place.)

Now when I was in Koln Germany you could get pomme doner which was a chinese take out box with pommes at the bottom tazeki sauce then doner then more tazeki sauce for like 3.50 and to me that was my favorite it's like the inside of a CA burrito except you have kind of a turkish substitute really cheap good drunk food or just craving amazing doner i miss doner sooo much

I got some for you guys to try, Aztec burger and Fryburger.. Fry burger is just putting your fries on the burger, Aztec is a special double cheeze burger. (If you're not from my region you most likely never heard of one) Aztec: Make a double cheeze burger, while that's making take a hotdog (Frankfurter) and fry that, When that's done split the hotdog lengthwise and top the pieces onto the burger, Top with what ever you like but by default they come with: Pickles,mustard,ketchup,onions,and a tangy sauce.

What we got in germany is a "Pomm-Döner" We don´t put the fries into the actuall döner but rather have a little box. similar to the boxes of chinese takeout food and first put fries in it then the meat of the döner and then the garlic or cocktail sauce. That tastes awesome. the order is important so the garlic sauce does not sits with the fries the whole time while eating.
