Fast moving wildfires force 25,000 to evacuate historic Canadian town | ITV News

Fast moving wildfires in the Canadian Rockies have forced around 25,000 people to flee the idyllic tourist town of Jasper.
Flames have devastated up to half of the structures in the town as a "wall of flames" climbed above treetops, officials said.
While there have been no immediate injury reports after the mass evacuation, town Mayor Richard Ireland said the wildfire has "ravaged our beloved community."

Exactly right, our summer in UK has been ruined by the planes seeding clouds, every time a blue sky appears so does the plane. Then lo and behold next day dull and grey with rain for next few days. The forestry commission stopped clearing all the scrubland around year 2000 & there is loads of dead dry scrubland everywhere so that’s why we have lots more fires than we used to. Disgusting behaviour.

Residents of Jasper have been concerned for years about all of the dead trees that were killed by the pine beetle. Unfortunately not much was being done about it, and now we are seeing the consequences of that situation. Unfortunately there are many areas in Alberta and British Columbia that are covered with dead trees that were killed by the pine beetle. Now we know how bad things can get if these trees start burning.

A Brit speaking, I have visited Jasper. I am no expert but why don't they clear fell all forest for say 1 km around all vulnerable settlements and build houses from stone (there are plenty of rocks in the area) rather than wood with fireproof tile roofs. Just a few thoughts.
