HI THERE!
I know, this isn't my usual planner-related video, BUT one of my oldest friends has just had her first baby and while I was dropping some of my "mom knowledge" on her it occurred to me that a video would better explain what I was doing... and it's my channel so I'll do what i want! :) So without further ado: How to quickly heat breastmilk without special equipment!
SUPPPLIES NEEDED:
breastmilk (duh) or formula - no judgements here!
microwave safe mug or measuring cup
microwave
milk storage bag or zippered freezer bag
water
kitchen funnel (optional but highly recommended)
bottle of your choice
RANDOM EXTRA THOUGHTS:
When I heated the first bag of milk I didn't follow my own chart at the end of the video. I was warming 3.5 ounces of milk in water that had only been heated for 90 seconds. For that amount of milk I should have used one cup of water heated for two minutes, and a float time of about ten seconds (like what I did for the frozen milk). I can usually go from frozen to ready-to-drink in under three minutes, and cold to perfectly warm in about 2.
WATER WASTER!!!!
Yes, running hot water over frozen milk while microwaving more water can seem wasteful. But think of the science behind it: When you put something frozen into hot water the two liquids will try to equalize temperature resulting in a barely-warm water. The frozen milk will cool the water instead of the water melting the frozen milk. A constant stream of hot water into the container will defrost the milk much faster. YOU CAN TOTALLY SKIP THAT STEP, and just put a frozen block of milk into the microwaved water and just let it float longer.
Also, one to two minutes of water flowing from a faucet is way shorter than a shower. Just sayin'...
WHILE YOU WAIT
I usually start this process with the baby unswaddled and then do a diaper check and swaddle when the water is being microwaved. Do whatever is reasonable for you and your baby, and don't feel bad if you don't get a bunch done in that time. Remember: I'm a childcare provider specializing in infant and toddler care. It took many years and babies to develop my current speed.
REUSING THE WATER
I usually use the same mug of water for all the feedings in a day. Just remember that some of the water will evaporate every time you heat it so you should check your water level every other time so you don't accidentally superheat your water.
SUPERHEATED WATER
Seriously, it is a major concern. Don't burn yourself or the baby with scalding hot water or get cut on shards of exploded glass/porcelain because you were trying to save time. It's better to not heat the water enough than too much.
MY MILK FLOATED TOO LONG/IS TOO HOT!
If you test your milk on your wrist and think it is too hot you can quickly cool it by pouring the milk into a cereal bowl, blowing on it for a few seconds, then pouring it back into the bottle. This is where that funnel comes in handy! Or just take the top off of the bottle. Exposure to air will cool it down faster than letting the steam build inside a closed bottle.
I think that's it... but I'll update this if I think of more tips! If you want more baby/toddler related videos, let me know!
