So at the fastest position, the rotary switch is 50% copper, 50% tape - i.e. the magnet is energised for the entire "pull" stroke and naturally released for the "push" stroke, together making a single revolution of the rotary-switch & flywheel. Is it worth trying a push-pull solenoid to apply force for both strokes, ie almost the entire revolution?
@davidrobert20079 жыл бұрын
You got it. I have made an engine with a push - pull solenoid, to replicate a steam engine, but generally it's easier to just use two or more solenoids (or twelve) to fill in the gaps.

@davidrobert20079 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course. The bare copper part of the rotary switch is positioned so that the solenoid only switches on when the piston is in a position to pull and turn the crankshaft, and will switch off before the piston is all the way in, allowing the crankshaft to freewheel and pull the piston out again. To increase engine speed I simply move the yellow wire to a wider part of the bare copper triangle, so that the piston receives a longer magnetic power pulse. Thanks for commenting.

This one uses a piece of copper water pipe covered in electrical tape with a triangle cut out of the tape to reveal bare copper. When the yellow wire is in contact with the bare copper triangle the solenoid is switched on, simply move the wire to a wider part of the triangle to give the solenoid a longer duration of on time. I hope this helps explain it.

So if I'm not mistaken, just like an internal combustion engine, the solenoid only pushes one way? Is the flywheel providing the inertia for the solenoid to move back into it's "firing" position?
@davidrobert20079 жыл бұрын
The solenoid engine piston pulls, rather than pushes to turn the crankshaft, so it is only one way, just the opposite way round compared to a combustion engine. You are correct the flywheel provides momentum to move the solenoid back into its firing position.

Hi could someone explain how the timing of energizing the solenoid is controlled? My understanding is that (assuming that the piston is extended when solenoid is turned off) when the solenoid is turned off, the piston extends. So in a high speed application like this how to correctly time the solenoid to energize to retract the piston?
@davidrobert20076 жыл бұрын
Hi. The solenoid switches on when the yellow wire is in contact with the bare copper part of the rotating switch. The solenoid piston pulls inwards when switched on. The yellow wire moves to a wider part of bare copper on the rotating switch, this gives a longer duration of solenoid on time, and results in faster engine speed. You can see this better in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpqpoKF4p7CEoZI hope that helps.
@nithianathan79626 жыл бұрын
@@davidrobert2007 I understand now. So with a longer duration of the solenoid time combined with the higher speed, does that mean that solenoid is turned on even when the piston is extending
@davidrobert20076 жыл бұрын
The longer duration of the solenoid "on time" is what causes the higher speed. The solenoid must be switched off when the piston is extending, or it opposes the speed.
@nithianathan79626 жыл бұрын
@@davidrobert2007 thank you for your replies. What you're saying makes sense. But when I look at the video at 3000rpm, the yellow wire is almost in contact with the copper constantly. At such high speeds how would you go about designing the contact area in a way knowing when the piston is fully extended and retracted.
@davidrobert20076 жыл бұрын
The rotary switch and the piston are mechanically connected, so that the solenoid will always switch off when the piston is fully in, and it will switch on only when the piston is fully out, or travelling back in. I know it looks like the yellow wire is almost constantly in contact with the copper part of the rotating switch, but it is actually switching on and off many times per second. At 3,000 rpm the yellow wire switches the solenoid on and off 50 times per second, perfectly synchronized with the position of the crankshaft and piston.
@jjwarner94199 жыл бұрын
Could this be used to power anything? Say, a desk fan?
@bona-fide9 жыл бұрын
JJ Warner im not a master at this but until some one who is comes...yes it can, though it IS converting an electrical current to rotation, the conventional dynamo(motor) does the work far more efficiently, (meaning u get more rotation with less wattage) as for why a solenoid motor over a conventional motor, i dont see the reason, but it is my assumption that it has an engineering benefit somehow.
@davidrobert20079 жыл бұрын
Agreed with above. The only benefit of the solenoid engine is that it can replicate a piston engine, so it is for educational / entertainment purposes only, as it is very inefficient at converting electrical energy into kinetic energy.

When I look on this engine like on gasoline or diesel engine so if you use oil on crackshaft the engine and some cooling the engine will be more effecient. Gasoline engine have lost most in exhaust(34-32%),water cooling(32-31%), friction(7% with motor oil without it is way more lost energy) and alternator..etc.(2%). In solenoid engine is no exhaust only friction and without cooling it's about 50-60% losts of energy if you use oil and cooling it will be about 15-20%(because of temperature of solenoid).
@davidrobert200710 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input, I do oil the crankshaft bearings and the solenoid only gets slightly warm under extremes so job done I'd say.
@Sargentkoko10 жыл бұрын
davidrobert2007 Yes, mostly done but if you can so on the head of connecting rod(that's part where it's connected to crankshaft) missing lead weight(on the gasoline/diesel engines is there a little weight that helps the piston to go down) and on the crankshaft should be little longer pin clamp, that will help for bigger rpm.
