I lurked around BAT (bring a trailer) for over a year looking for my 996 and finally got tired of being outbild on cars with high mileage and fetching crazy prices. A 2001 986 S came up (IMS solution, front spacers, 987 18" rims, Potenza RE 71s, GT3 console delete, ball bearing short shifter, EVOMS intake, aftermarket SS exhaust with secondary cat delete, GT2RS Alcantera shifter, driver shelf delete, 996 GT3 seats, GT3 control arms and RoW M030 suspension) and I snagged it for much less than a 911. Cannot be happier with my decision to go 986 regardless of what the Pcar purists may think. It handles as if on rails and putting the top down makes it that more visceral (South Florida). Most bang for the buck with second going to the MX5 (another hairdresser car).

The 986 Boxter is going to become a classic and good ones will start to appreciate, the simple lines are aging very well and look better and better as time goes by. As a tall person I find the ergonomics of them a bit too small, so I went down the 911 route (997 Carrera 2S). The entry level Carreras also benefit from the same mods, understeer from the factory and are held back on power. Suspension and breathing mods with Pagid RS brake pads and GT3 master cylinder really unlock the potential of the car (380bhp+, same as the gen 2 996 GT3).

Nice to see this but to be honest, this has been a known fact for close 20 years that the 986 3.2 S is greatly detuned..Just a few tweaks unleashes the deadly power in this relatively light car. Actual dyno of 310 hp with bolt ons and tune, check Rennlist. Once you change the exhaust to catless headers and bypass pipes it sounds and drives manic..Ask me how I know? :) 986 S Owner for the last 17 years. "Best Kept Secret"

There's an ex-Porsche engineer of some kind who makes exhausts for these in Belgium iirc. Exhausts how he thought they should have came...my dad got one on his Boxster S and it sounds completely fucking different. It sounds ridiculously good, incredibly stupidly good. I've never heard an aftermarket exhaust sound anywhere near as good.

Love em, cracking car. I have a modified 996 , and nearly bought a boxter. My 996 has a larger plenum, k&n dual bypass exhaust and remap. Mine is a 3.4 standard 300 bhp, running 335 at the moment. This will go straight in a boxter. Get a boxter with an ims issue for £1500 get a 3.4 and modify it for £5k you have a bargain super car

We had exactly the same color combination and it is still my favorite boxster: totally simple and no-nonsense interior, great driving position that feels a bit like in a go cart ...and the screaming engine just behind you is just fantastic and a bit addictive....because it wants you to step on it and really rev it up. The limits of these cars a way higher than those of average drivers. Get one and enjoy the flat six natural aspirated engine....they are already history.

My manual 986 S has the 74 mm throttle body and an IPD plenum, courtesy of the previous owner, but even with a remap shortly after those mods were made, it made 252 HP peak power and 219 lbft peak torque on the dyno. Effectively then, it seems the mods and remap only restored the power to what would it have been when the car was new and brought the peak torque to just below the officially quoted 225 lbft figure. Now, rolling road results can vary significantly from day to day, the curves looked very smooth and I wasn't looking for a modded car, just a well-used stock one in fine fettle, so I was happy... until that day on a country lane when I didn't see which way a Golf R went. Perhaps a less restrictive air intake and a different map would produce the sort of gains Bruno managed to get. I am sorely tempted! After that, maximising the car's potential would involve custom exhaust manifolds and maybe also a lighter muffler, at escalating cost for diminishing returns. But I do wonder how Bruno's existing mods affect driveability and engine life. Is the power delivery smooth? Has the throttle become an on/off switch? Do you have overheating issues? Are you more likely to blow a head gasket? What's the noise like on long motorway trips? I read somewhere that Porsche originally intended to use the 3.2 litre M96 engine in the 996, but they couldn't get the performance they wanted (maybe there just wasn't enough margin for future growth).

I've got an old 987 with a Remus, not fast compared to todays metal but the noise & handling is addictive... and it's plenty quick enough for me.

Don't forget to rebuild or junk the stock gas pedal assembly. They are ALL plastic (same as 996) and the pivot claws are breaking off by 100k miles in my experience. Trust me, you don't want to have to drive home when this happens !

In germany they call it "Hausfrauenporsche" = a Porsche for Housewifes. But i like the drvieability even slightly modified these little things do very well on the autobahn. 270km/h are no problem

I'm currently looking into buying a boxter a for a build I'm planning and was going to engine swap it due to the horror stories I hear about the engine and such. Be easier if I didn't have to of course 😂 the way that's driven it looks pretty reliable. Is it still alive and kicking?

Hi, at 4:14 in your video you talk about the cars set up. Can you explain in detail how you corrected the under steer? What type of spacers in front, Size? Rear spacers?
