A round trip wouldn't necessarily cause you to time travel to before you left. You have to consider the movement through space of the object you depart from. You will at most, return to it at the exact time you left.
@neilruedlinger4851
@neilruedlinger4851 Жыл бұрын
You could manage the return journey so you arrive a few hours after you left.
@boots4yew
@boots4yew 6 ай бұрын
It doesn't matter if you returned or not after your jump out time. Just your arrival at your destination at FTL (or any interim point where you were traveling at FTL) would alter the spacetime at a point in time that is, at best, coinciding with your departure. Your arrival would interact with that locality and ripple out as gravitational waves, reflected or radiated photons, and anything else that travels at the speed of light. It would propagate in an expanding sphere, at the speed of light, and eventually reach whatever point you left from at a time from at, or before, you left (depending on whether or not it was instantaneous transit or just some multiple of light speed) and create a paradox by not being the same as what you were able to observe before you jumped to FTL. Those outgoing ripple effects may not be detectable by our instruments, but they would still interact, at a quantum level, with fundamental particles. So, maybe, you could travel to, by FTL, to new universes, under the quantum multi-verse theory, but you could never come back to this one. Every time you engage your FTL/wormhole drive, you'd be jumping to a completely new quantum-state universe.

@@davidtatro7457 The technology to reach several percentages the speed of light has existed for decades, see nuclear pulse propulsion. An instant jump eliminates collision risk but only along the trajectory. If you jump blind a lightyear away, there is no way to know whether an object has moved there in the year it took the light to reach you. You'll need to send an unmanned scout, also equipped with a jump drive, ahead; have it record, return, confirm it survived and the ambient properties, then do the big jump. This could be automated and I envision the scouts being made as small as possible. But it would reduce the distance traveled per unit time, and the total distance every jump covers - unless you're willing to risk "overshooting" your unmanned scout.

If this type of travel is truly possible, think about the implications. We probably aren't the first intelligent species to evolve. There are undoubtable other intelligent species from other star systems which have been around a lot longer than ours, maybe even on the order of millions of years older. So if this kind of travel is possible, others have likely accomplished this feat, which means they might already be here. Perhaps some UAPs are evidence of their presence. This isn't a big leap of logic. To me it seems like a natural conclusion from the hypothesis.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but a vacuum (or in a plasma, gas, atmosphere, liquid or solid; but they're ignored as a theoretical simplifying assumption, to help focus the hypothetical/theoretical discussion) the space-time is permeated by an electro-magnetic (em) field, so a vacuum is not really empty from an energy perspective. This is why photons can travel through a vacuum because they can be thought of as em energy fluctuations in the em field. In Classical em Field theory, mathematically formulated using Vector Calculus by James Clerk Maxwell, the em field is continuous through which radio/light/X ray/Gamma ray photons propagate at the speed of light. Each photon consists of oscillating electric and magnetic fields (oriented in the direction of the photon's travel), at an angle of 90° to each other, or to put it another way the oscillating electric and magnetic field orientations in the direction of the photon's travel are orthogonal to each other. In Quantum Field Theory, the em field permeating the space-time vacuum is quantized and fluctuates all the time with discrete energy levels, as quantized photons propagate through it. Some Quantum Physicists visualize the Quantum (em) Field as something similar to the foam that sometimes covers the sea, and refer to the quantized em field as a Quantum Foam. One consequence of Quantum Field Theory, is that virtual particle-antiparticle pairs spontaneously emerge out of the Quantum Foam and at time scales of femtoseconds to picoseconds annihilate each other in a flash of Gamma ray photon pairs. I read somewhere that one theoretical consequence of an Alcubierre Metric warp field is where the space-time distortions are the strongest, virtual particle-antiparticle pairs emerge from the Quantum Foam at concentrated levels, and there could be a Gamma ray hazard to a planet if the starship is facing the planet when it arrives and the warp drive is switched off to allow the starship to enter orbit. The hazard to the planet could be avoided by the starship trajectory pointed at a tangent, to its stable orbit, so the Gamma ray stream is directed away from the planet's surface and atmosphere. I have wondered if these virtual particle-antiparticle pairs could be somehow harvested separately, as additionally sourced zero point or vacuum energy to sustain the Alcubierre Metric warp drive.

Mr I am a big fan of all your videos and I follow them closely, Also admire your work as well. I had never written on your channel, but recently I have been thinking about the theory of relativity and questioning the always assumed to be as it is todays stated, what I think it is not the absolute description of nature. Then on this video I listen to you going directly accepting it as a fact, where the time dilation has not been proved at "long scale", sincerely I think it is missing something fundamental before basing nature and the modern calculations on the "dilation" of time developed only mathematically and pushing it to the edge using theory, Theory is not the description of nature, we will approach as much as we can to a description using theory. I think when we achieve very fast travel if we achieved it and I believe we will the time "dilation" will not be as it is told by relativity theory, time might be independent even from space if something is missing in the middle of the description before applying the Lorenz transformation. I think we must not be so much concerned about the time dilation when developing faster travel, more than that on what is space and if really it could be stretched or deformed, or if it is just the framework where energy propagates and can not be deformed, or if relativity theory as beautiful as it is is just a very complex mathematical description of the influence of gravity on space all over all objects and mater and time was included to enriched it after a experimental result and theoretical experiments also of what would happen in presence of a gravitational field or accelerating fast, I think time is independent even at high speeds or in a gravitational field, I think all the development of the theories used on this developments could be executed considering time absolute

I am glad that realistic ways of faster than light travel are being discussed, even going mainstream with departments of NASA like the Eagleworks Laboratory researching it. A decade or two ago the scientific community would crucify scientists from going down this path of research. What are your thoughts on why we haven’t run into intelligent life using such technology? That is the one thing that concerns me about the long term prospects of FTL travel, as we cannot find any solid evidence of non Earth based intelligent life visiting our solar system. My personal opinion is that several Fermi Paradox explanations come into play. 1) Intelligent/technological life is rare. 2) Such life is very far away, we may be the only intelligent/technological species in our local cluster of galaxies. 3) The universe has only recently began to spawn intelligent life and we may be one of the first, my favorite theory as we may end up being an intelligent elder race someday and get to witness the evolution of other intelligent creatures thanks in part to technology discussed here.

There are no issues with cause and effect because matter with mass cannot move faster than light speed. But if we simply move non-matter around us faster than light speed, we will experience no causal effects whatsoever because we aren't moving. That's actually one of the major issues with this channel/many others; they will oversimplify and say that any motion causes time dilation which is false. We are already moving faster than light speed when compared to objects at the other end of the universe. But time has not frozen for us because relative motion compared to any random point alone doesn't matter.

Ftl travel isn't the only option. If we can find an energy source that's powerful enough to make it possible, that same energy source should be enough to open a Rosen Einstein bridge(a wormhole) to go from point A to point B instantly. There would be no need to go so fast if you can take a shortcut through space. Think bigger people!

The scientific community's accepted theory is that Time and Density are linked specifically referencing the variation of time recorded with atomic clocks placed at separate altitudes and another conducted by placing an atomic clock in the pyramid of Giza and the other a short distance away. The results revealed the clock in the pyramid to be slower and thought to be caused by the sheer density of the pyramid.......So if time is altered based upon Speed AND/Or Density......could you also conclude that Time alters speed and Density?

Theretically speaking you could even write a message onto another planet from one distant planet to the other faster than light speed using a very primitive way, by having a drawing tool connected to a very long rode that also has a drawing tool on its other ending part as well...then (theoretically) when you would write something the message will kinda transfer instantly at the same time to that other distant planet in what considered as faster than light speed since it would be instant at the very same time but obviously in order for that to happen you would first have to build the long rode all the way to the other distant planet and that would take much more time and obviously it is not realistic to do so in any way but its an interesting idea and so simple yet in theory at least it is able to be faster than light.

Not really, you would have to send a signal through the rode to get the machine to write on the other end. On earth it's instantenous, kinda... Because of the short distance. FTL Technology has always been a product of science fiction and is becoming more of a reality sooner than we ever thought possible. Due to the study of quantum physics, and all areas of quantum science... And mechanical engineering, the world's brightest and most intelligent scientists and engineers are in the process of creating an engine advanced enough to utilize antimatter as a source of energy that can change the trajectory of space flight for the whole world. Faster-than-light travel is still a theoretical subject on the terms of anything outside of the quantim realm, especially human-space travel. We may not see our first faster-than-light travel capable engine put in a space rocket many decades down the road. But it has moved up from an improbable figment of science fiction to a distinct possibility.

If we could ever warp time I thought you could just stick matter in a chamber and send it from one time to another then once it has been through time sufficiently it will age into antimatter and we would have a large quantity seemingly instantly. Would require a time mirror to bounce the matter back and also I can't solve for the fact that where and what is time and how to travel through it and probably a wormhole. I also thought if you had a micro black hole and as it was travelling you could latch onto its gravity and or electric charge follow it up to the speed of light then it would expire if you could stay out of its event horizon. Also if they are binary pairs which is ridiculously complex they might be able to be followed like a "chariot." However also as you approach the speed of light time slows down so I don't think it will hit the speed of light but it would likely be retardly fast.

@@asteronx the part that worries me more than the energy requirements is the potential for a bowshock buildup of particles at the front of the ship. @@matts9371 This would only roughly-basically true for positive energy warp bubbles (mass reduction) for interplanetary travel, not FTL interstellar travel. The intra-block is completely separate and made of tachyons (which do exist). It's more complicated that this simple statement. Things are only impossible until its not. finding away around the speed of light the light isn't impossible tho that's just a way of bypassing causality the warp drive itself doesn't really exceed the speed light because the space around the ship is carrying the ship along Which seems like aparrent ftl or effective ftl speeds it doesn't create paradoxes because it doesn't really Brake causality because the ship itself isn't really travelling faster than light it's the space around it.

Faster than light travel with a space drive designed to transport a driver through space such that the driver has the control over the direction has the following problem. The drive has to warp, modify, undisturbed space ahead of the drive under control of the driver. This results in the conflict that the intended change of space has to travel from the initiator, the driver, faster than the drive, to in front of the drive to a place where faster than light travel is not possible. Focus is laid on the way that a part of space would be isolated from the rest, but interface region between normal space and warped space has to maintain its position with respect to the drive. Movement of curvature of space is called a gravitational wave. Such wave has been proven to move with the speed of light. Thus, since the protection bubble around the drive, the modified space under influence of the driver, can't move faster than light also the drive inside that region can't travel faster than light.
